Summary: Song of Solomon is about a man and a woman, their love, courtship, and marriage. It is an allegory of God's love for Israel and/or the church. Here we look at the "I am" of 2:1-2.

This is a story that tells another story.

The bridegroom (Christ) comparing Himself to a common flower in Israel. Why?

The Lord compares Himself to other objects:

The Bread of Life

John 6:35, And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

The Light of the World

John 8:12, Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

The Door

John 10:7, Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

The Good Shepherd

John 10:11, I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

The True Vine

John 15:1, I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

The Way, The Truth, and The Life

John 14:6, Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

The Bright Morning Star

Revelation 22:16,I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

But why a common flower?

Its Location:

Between the Mediterranean Coast and Carmel Mountain Range.

Valley of Sharon.

Why the comparison?

Excellence

Color - 5 white petals (purity), 5 red inward sections (blood), 5 is the number for grace, 10 is the number for testimony

Hebrews 9:22, And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

Fragrance

Ephesians 5:2, And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savor.

Planted

Philippians 2:8, Being found in fashion as a man, humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Trampled by Men:

Rose of Sharon often trampled by man during wars but grew back

Isaiah 53:5, But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

The Rose of Sharon is free

Galatians 5:1, Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

John 8:36, If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

Christ is easy to find

Revelation 3:20, Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Never a place He cannot hear you

1 John 5:14, And this is the confidence that we have in him, if we ask anything according to His will, He heareth us:

Never a time that He is not available

Matthew 28:20, Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Unlike some areas where flowers are planted, there are NO signs posted for us to “Keep Out.”
