God’s Children
1 John 3:1-3
We are God's children. In verse one, it tells who we are. In verse two, it tells who we are becoming. In the rest of chapter, it tells us what we take as we grow... victory, love, and confidence.
In verse 1:
Our Position:
“The sons of God.”
• What are we?
• Reflects a spiritual birth.
• We hold a title, as an heir to the King, therefore we cannot be taken from Him.
• John 1:12, But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.
• Heavenly title or worldly title. (President so & so, Queen of whatever, CEO of this)
• People should see Jesus in us.
We are Peculiar:
“The world knoweth us not.”
• We are different from the world, we are strangers in this world, we are a chosen few.
• 1 Peter 2:9, But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people: the ye should show forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
• The world does not understand our joy.
• World only sees the here and now.
• We may be in this world, but we are not partakers of it.
• Should Christians blend in and look like the world?
In verse 2:
Our Potential:
“We shall be like Him.”
• Are we changing daily?
• Are we maturing in our walk of faith?
• 1 Corinthians 15:52, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
• On that day, we shall be changed, no more sorrow, no more grief, no more pain, no more disease, no more...
In verse 3:
Our Purity:
“This hope in Him.”
• Being in line with God
• James 4:8, Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
• We are to Humble our hearts to Christ.
• We are to Submit ourselves to His will.
• We are to Commit our lives to Him.
We should strive to become more like Christ. Do not fall for worldly treasures. We are to lay up our treasures in heaven. Where is our position? How is our peculiarity? What about our potential and our purity?
