This seems like a strange statement to make, “The foolishness of God.” When I think of God, I think of every attribute of awe, but foolishness does not come to mind. I can see God as omnipotent, perfect, Acts 17:24. I can see God in justice and holiness, I can see Him in grace, mercy, and love, but it is extremely hard or me to see God in foolishness, but it is in the bible.
The most important matter you will ever discuss or decide on is salvation. Your soul and your eternity. You can hear all kinds of plans and ways, and methods for you to take care of your soul. Some true, some false and this is common for it was true in Paul’s day. When it comes to an important matter like salvation, I want to know, “What saith the Lord.” Isaiah 55:8-9
1. In verses 11-13, some teaching salvation by following certain men.
2. In verses 14-17, some teaching salvation in baptism.
3. In verses 22-23, salvation in man’s wisdom
I. God’s Wisdom has always Seemed Foolish to Men
1. Noah, Genesis 6:8-22
a. Noah listened to the voice of God above all other voices in the world.
b. Noah obeyed the voice of God however contrary to human reason it may have been.
c. Noah did the will of God even though he was the only one doing it.
d. Noah did the work of God in the face of every opposition and discouragement.
2. Moses, Exodus 4:13-28
a. Red sea
b. Some say little water. It is a bigger miracle to drown men in less water.
3. Joshua, Joshua 6:1-5, 20
a. No witty plans
b. No mighty wars or fights.
4. Naaman, 2 Kings 5:1-14
II. The Foolishness of the Cross
1. The cross of Christ shows man as he really is.
a. 1 Peter 3:18
b. 2 Corinthians 5:21
c. Galatians 3:13
2. The cross shows God at His best, GRACE.
a. Ephesians 2:8-9
b. Romans 5:8, easy for a mother to lover her child, not others.
c. John 3:16, be hard to give your son for another.
d. 1 Peter 2:22-24
3. The cross shows the only way to heaven
a. Hebrews 9:22
b. John 14:1-6, Acts 4:12
c. Hebrews 2:3, how shall you escape?
III. The Foolishness of Jesus Coming Again
1. Statements I have heard.
a. I have heard that all my life.
b. A man would be a fool to believe that.
c. All that Christians can hope for is tomorrow.
2. Jesus said He would come again, Acts 1:10-11, John 14:1-3
3. The bible says Christ coming is our “Hope.”
a. 1 Corinthians 15:51-57
b. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17
IV. In Closing
1. Let me ask a personal question.
2. Has this message seemed foolishness to you this morning?
3. Has it brought a warm, good feeling to your heart to hear that good ‘old fashioned’ story one more time.
4. Your only hope of eternal life is found in the preaching of the cross.
5. It is not found in the peace of the world
6. Have you ever been to Calvary?
7. If you were to stand before God today, what would you tell Him to be your bases of forgiveness?
8. What would be your worthiness to spend eternity in heaven?
9. Only the blood of Jesus.
