From the Spiritual viewpoint “what made these wise men wise? We ask the question and seek to answer. In the answer we hope to see what will make us “wise men”. Wise men still seek Jesus, few seeking today. Matthew 7:13-14, 21-23, 24-26. Many are preparing for the Christmas day without any thought of getting ready for Christ. These were wise men, the bible along with the ministry of the Holy Spirit is the only source of wisdom. Psalm 111:10, James 1:5.
I. They Were Wise in Their Direction
1. They came to Jesus.
2. Many people are running away from Jesus, especially at the Christmas season.
a. Hardest time of the year to get people to church.
b. Hardest time to get people serious about the service of the Lord.
3. Far more will attend so called Christmas party’s than will ever darken a church door for a worship service. I feel its safe to say, “far more are moving away from the things of the Lord than are trying to discover Jesus.
II. They Asked a Wise Question, Where is He that is Born King of the Jews?
1. They were anxious enquiries. Few people are anxious about their spiritual needs. Physical needs, yes. Material needs, yes, spiritual needs, no. Isaiah 1:18
2. What must I do to be saved? Acts 16:30
3. How can I accept some man guiding me? Acts 8:29-31
4. Ye must be born again. John 3:1-7
5. Many people in need today, and they are asking every question but the right one.
a. They are seeking answers to their problems in everything except Jesus.
b. Home falling apart.
6. The question ought to be, “where can I find the Lord?”
III. They were Wise in Their Motives, They Came to Worship
1. We need to get back to the person of the birth as well as to the birth of the person.
a. John 4:24
b. Ecclesiastes 5:1-5
2. What does the word “worship” mean?
a. To kiss like a dog licking his master’s hand.
b. To prostrate oneself in homage.
c. God has always had a place for His people to worship. The church.
IV. They Were Wise in Believing Prophecy
1. Matthew 2:6
2. The Old Testament prophet said, “And thou Bethlehem in the land of Judah.”
3. Now many today have an unbelieving ear or heart when it comes to bible prophecy concerning the second coming of Jesus.
4. The wise men were determined to obey the word of God in spite of Herod and an unbelieving world.
5. Read extra note here, “Twas the night before Jesus came.”
V. They Were Wise in Their Rejoicing
1. This phrase “great joy” is equal of the gospel and the gospel is good news. Luke 2:8-10
2. The bible says, “There is rejoicing in Heaven over a sinner coming to repentance.”
3. What is it that brings rejoicing to our heart today? Is it the work of the Lord? Acts 8:5-8
4. Rejoicing over a lost stray sheep. Luke 15:3-6
5. If you want real joy in your heart today.
a. You come and find Jesus; the joy bells will begin to ring.
1) It did with Zacchaeus. Luke 19:1-10
2) It did with the woman at the well. John 4:28-29, 39-42.
3) Acts 8:35-39
4) 1 Peter 1:8
b. Real joy is bringing someone to Jesus. Proverbs 11:30
VI. They Were Wise in Their Gifts
1. Matthew 2:11
2. They brought their gifts to the right person. Do we?
a. 2 Corinthians 8:5
b. They gave themselves to the Lord.
3. This is what God wants most of all. Romans 12:1
4. Lukewarm makes God sick. Revelation 3:15
5. Christ gave His all for us. 2 Corinthians 5:21
a. Have you even considered Him this season?
b. What gift could you bring a king?
c. Your heart, your love, your desire.
VII. I Wonder Will You be a Wise Person This Christmas
1. Wise in your direction. Where is your life taking you?
2. Wise in your questions, anxious enquires.
3. Wise in your motives, come to worship. God has always had a place to worship, the church.
4. Wise in believing prophecy, He is coming again.
5. Wise in rejoicing Gospel, good news, salvation.
6. Wise in their gifts, yield yourself.
