Psalm 15:1 (NLT) says, “Who may worship in Your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter Your presence on Your holy hill? Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts.”
Do I qualify, Lord, to come and worship You? To enter Your presence? According to this Psalm, the worshiper needs Your very character to qualify, in thoughts, words and deeds. Job 4:17 (NLT) asks “Can anyone be pure before the Creator?” Romans 3:23 (NLT) says “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” I fall far too short of perfect, Lord.
In Isaiah 55:8-9 the Lord says “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts. And My ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so My ways are higher than your ways and My thoughts higher than your thoughts.”
What does this mean? How could I ever attain such heights, Lord?
TOP-LEVEL CLEARANCE TO WORLD LEADERS
The president of Russia is closely guarded against people entering his presence in the Kremlin. The president of the United States of America is closely guarded against people entering his presence in the Oval office. The president of China is closely guarded against people entering his presence in the Presidential Palace. They are all extra careful as to who is allowed access. Security guards are all well trained. Only those with special clearance can enter. Very few are granted access. You can’t just let anyone in.
WHO HAS TOP-LEVEL CLEARANCE TO GOD?
But who is able to enter into Your presence, Lord God?
I can only think of one person who has top-level clearance to You, Lord, and is able to enter into Your presence, as a human being, and that is Jesus Himself.
DWELLING IN YOUR PRESENCE
Yet David speaks about wanting to enter into the Tabernacle, the Holy place of God. In the OT this was where God revealed Himself, in the most Holy place. He didn’t only want to visit this place. He wanted to live there. To enter into the presence of God and dwell there. Uninterrupted relationship with God. Such was his longing to spend time with God. He wanted top-level clearance.
In Psalms 42:1-2 (NLT2) David says, “As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for You, O God. I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before Him?”
TOP-LEVEL CLEARANCE TO THE HOLY OF HOLIES
Only the High Priest, God’s representative in ancient Israel, could enter through the veil into a room called the Holy of Holies at the centre of the Tabernacle, and then only once a year.
David was not a priest. He was only a king, yet in this Psalm he longs to live beyond the veil—in God’s very presence.
WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO OBTAIN SUCH TOP-LEVEL CLEARANCE?
In the Holy of Holies was a box made of Acacia wood and covered with gold called the Ark of the Covenant (You may recall a movie starring Harrison Ford called Raiders of the Lost Ark.)
On top of the Ark were two golden angels looking down at the top of the Ark to a place called the mercy seat. They represented God’s holiness, His righteousness and justice.
Inside the Ark were the broken tablets of the law (Exodus 31:18), Aaron’s rod that budded (Numbers 17:8) and a bowl of manna (Numbers 11:1-9). Each item spoke of events in Israel’s history. They had rebelled against God’s Word, regaled against the leaders of God, and rejected the provision of God. In other words these objects represented Israel’s failure and sin.
The Angels who represented God’s holiness, His righteousness and justice, on the top of the Ark looked down at Israel’s sin. God can only condemn sin.
Romans 6:23 (NLT) says, “For the wages of sin is death”
How can I possibly enter into the presence of Almighty God tainted with the irredeemable imprints of my sin?
On the Holy Hill of Jerusalem in the time of David, was a sanctuary. In the middle of that sanctuary was a place called the Holy of Holies or the Most Holy Place. In that most holy place was a box made of Acacia wood and covered with gold called the Ark of the Covenant (You may recall a movie starring Harrison Ford called Raiders of the Lost Ark.)
In other words, these objects represented Israel’s failure and sin.
In a beautiful visual representation, the Angels who represented God’s holiness, His righteousness and justice, on the top of the Ark looked down at Israel’s sin. God can only condemn sin.

Because of the people’s sins, once a year on the Day of Atonement, the high priest would enter the Holy of Holies.
Before entering, he went through a thorough process of purifying himself. He came in fear and trembling with a bowl containing the blood from a sacrificed animal. He would pour the blood on the mercy seat, on top of the golden box between the golden angels.
Now the angels representing God’s holiness could see the blood rather than Israel’s sin. Now God’s holiness, His righteousness and justice were satisfied with the blood of an innocent sacrifice. The price was paid for the wages of sin. Other sacrifices were made throughout the year, but this sacrifice was for the whole nation.

Hebrews 9:4-28 says this is a beautiful picture of the sacrifice of Christ. “… So Christ has now become the High Priest over all the good things that have come. He has entered that greater, more perfect Tabernacle in heaven. … With His own blood—not the blood of goats and calves—He entered the Most Holy Place once for all time and secured our redemption forever…
Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. …
Christ offered Himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins … For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed …
… He entered into heaven itself to appear now before God on our behalf.
And He did not enter heaven to offer Himself again and again, like the high priest here on earth who enters the Most Holy Place year after year with the blood of an animal. … But now, once for all time, He has appeared at the end of the age to remove sin by His own death as a sacrifice.
And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment, so also Christ died once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for Him.”
But what does all this really mean for me when it comes to entering into the presence of God today?
OPEN DOOR POLICY
Earthly rulers limit access to themselves, but as one commentary puts it, “The great God of the universe … has an open-door policy. Because of the shed blood of Jesus Christ, we, as believers, can freely approach God’s holy throne. He not only invites us but also encourages us to come boldly before Him for everything we need (He. 4:16). Amazing! The Lord wants to be personally involved in each of our lives. In fact, He yearns for us to live in close communion with Him.” (Leadership Ministries Worldwide. (2014). Psalms)
The amazing truth for all of us is that through Christ we have been granted top-level clearance to God. 2 Corinthians 6:16 (NLT2) says, “…We are the temple of the living God. As God said: “I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be My people.”
DWELLING IN GOD’S PRESENCE
Romans 6:23 (NLT2) says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.”
When I believed in You, Lord Jesus, I exchanged my sin for Your righteousness. Now Lord, You see me through the eyes of the Cross. You see that the wages of sin have been paid. You see that I have been redeemed by the blood of the sacrifice of Your own Son, Lord God. You see that I have accepted that Jesus died for me. You see me as forgiven rather than condemned.
Galatians 3:26 says, “For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.”
When I believed, I became united to Christ” and He is “in me” so now even I have the privilege of entering into Your presence, Lord, as Your child. Jesus is the only way, truth and life. I can’t come to You except through Him and His all-encompassing work on the Cross for me.
John 17:3 (NLT2) says, “And this is the way to have eternal life—to know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one You sent to earth.”
Hebrews 4:16 (NLT2) says, “So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.”
Isaiah 61:10 (NLT) says, “I am overwhelmed with joy in the Lord my God! For He has dressed me with the clothing of salvation and draped me in a robe of righteousness.”
1 John 1:7 (NLT2) “…the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from all sin… ”
WHY DO I HAVE TOP-LEVEL CLEARANCE?
The question is not “Am I able to enter His presence?” I have put my trust in Christ, so I have top-level clearance and I can enter into His presence. The question now is “am I getting to know Him more and more?”
Philippians 1:9-11 says, “… May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God.”
I know that the only way to get to know God better and to live a life that pleases Him is by having a regular time of communion with the Lord through Bible reading and prayer?
Jeremiah 9:23-24 (NLT2) says, “This is what the Lord says: “Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches. But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know Me and understand that I am the Lord who demonstrates unfailing love and who brings justice and righteousness to the earth, and that I delight in these things. I, the Lord, have spoken!”
In Philippians 3:7-8 (NLT2) the Apostle Paul says, “Everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ.”
So as we grow in our relationship with our Redeemer, Jesus Christ, we develop a desire to live by His standards. The depth of our eternal relationship with Him can often be measured by the way we reflect His standards in our daily activities. (Life Application Bible).
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT) says, “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”
Psalm 15:1 (NLT) says, “Who may worship in Your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter Your presence on Your holy hill? Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts.”
I can’t say with honesty that I lead a blameless life, Lord. I fail You in so many ways. Yet still You give me top-level clearance into Your presence!
Jeremiah 17:9-10 (NLT2) says, “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives. …”
Only You, Lord Jesus, are blameless. Only You speak the truth.
What hope do I have, Lord?
I have hope, because I have You in my life, Lord Jesus! How amazing is that! And Your Word invites me to make choices. Choices to allow You to guide my life, choices to be patient with and make allowance for the faults of other believers, showing my love for them, to resist the devil, to stay close to You, to remain loyal to You and not the world, to grieve over my sin, to understand and seek Your will, to be filled with Your Holy Spirit …
Galatians 5:16-17 (NLT) says, “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.”
James 4:7-10 (NLT) says, “So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you.
Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.
Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy.
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up in honor.”
John 15:5 (NLT) says, “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in Me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.”
Hebrews 11:6 (NLT2) says, “And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to Him must believe that God exists and that He rewards those who sincerely seek Him.”
1 John 3:5-9 (NLT) says, “And you know that Jesus came to take away our sins, and there is no sin in Him. … But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil. Those who have been born into God’s family do not make a practice of sinning, because God’s life is in them. So they can’t keep on sinning, because they are children of God.”
Theologians call this “imputed righteousness”. Romans 5:1-2 (NLT) says, “Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.”
Psalm 15:1 (NLT) says, “Who may worship in Your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter Your presence on Your holy hill? Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts.”
William Secker says, “When the wheels of a clock move within, the hands on the dial will move without. When the heart of a man is sound in conversion, then the life will be fair in profession. …” (quote from The treasury of David, Spurgeon, C. H.)
Out of relationship with Christ, we have the possibility to live blamelessly, to do what is right and speak truth from a sincere heart.
PSALM 15:1-2 – FREE SPEECH AND MISINFORMATION versus TRUTH AND GOSSIP
Psalm 15:1-2 (NLT) says, “Who may worship in Your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter Your presence on Your holy hill? … Those who refuse to gossip or harm their neighbors or speak evil of their friends.”
I find it fascinating, Lord, that You mention gossipers and backstabbers among murderers and immoral acts in Romans 1:28-32 (NLT). It says “Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, He abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done. Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarrelling, deception, malicious behaviour, and GOSSIP. They are BACKSTABBERS, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents. They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy. They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too.”
It seems the power of the tongue to speak evil is equivalent to the worst of sins. In an age where one person’s Free Speech is more akin to sledging or slander and another person’s Misinformation is more of a denial to consider another person’s view, Psalm 15 speaks instead of TRUTH versus GOSSIP. It speaks of what builds up a community rather than what tears it apart.
Even in Leviticus 19:15-17 (NLT) Lord, You say, “Do not spread slanderous gossip among your people … ”
1 John 4:19-21 (NLT2) says, “We love each other because He (God) loved us first. If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a Christian brother or sister, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see? And He has given us this command: Those who love God must also love their Christian brothers and sisters.”
Lord Jesus, You said, in Mark 12:30-31 (NLT) “And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”
Even a gossiper can tell the truth about a fault in another person with malicious intent. That kind of truth-telling is mere slander.
The gossiper will never tell a lie when the truth will do more damage. The motto of the gossiper is “If you can’t say anything good about a person, then let’s hear it!” (Rod Mattoon).
Lord, you describe a gossiper/slanderer as a fool. Proverbs 10:18-20 (NLT) says, “Hiding hatred makes you a liar; slandering others makes you a fool.” Interesting to note that hiding hatred makes you a liar.
Lord, you call it out for what it is. What is at stake here is TRUTH, vs slander.
We can hide our hate by cancelling someone rather than confronting them personally. Cancelling those we hate is easy enough. We can destroy reputations with social gossip. We can judge and slander those we disagree with by saying they are spreading misinformation. Spreading social gossip about a person is easier than confronting someone face to face.
Proverbs 17:9 (NLT) says, “Love prospers when a fault is forgiven, but dwelling on it separates close friends.” 1 Peter 4:8 (NLT) says, “Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.”
I have noticed in the News occasionally that we see people who are charged with a crime but by the time they get to court, innocent or guilty, truth is no longer an issue. The person may win the case and be declared innocent, but long before this, they have been convicted of their “alleged” crime already. The gossiper has won. Gossip/slander is a peculiar form of misinformation that wins the case, not by presuming innocence but by destroying reputations.
Lord, I am grateful that You are clear and upfront about what You hate and what You love. But you approach things differently. You always have a view towards restoration rather than judgment. You confront us personally. You always seek repentance rather than ruin. When something needs to be exposed to public scrutiny, You do so with Truth and Love.
Ephesians 4:13-16 (NLT) says when we know Christ personally, “… we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of His body, the church. … As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.”
Proverbs 11:11-13 (NLT) says, “Upright citizens are good for a city and make it prosper, but the talk of the wicked tears it apart. It is foolish to belittle one’s neighbor; a sensible person keeps quiet. A gossip goes around telling secrets, but those who are trustworthy can keep a confidence.”
When you ask someone to keep a secret you were told by a friend about themselves in confidence, you are asking them to do something you cannot do. Most people seldom repeat gossip the way they heard it. “I won’t bore you with the details. In fact, I’ve already told you more than I heard myself.” A gossiper is one who can give you all the details without knowing the facts. The people who gossip TO you will also gossip ABOUT you. (Rod Mattoon).”
Proverbs 26:20 (NLT) says, “Fire goes out without wood, and quarrels disappear when gossip stops.”
Warren Wiersbe says, “The Lord is blameless in what He is (1 John 1:6), righteous in what He does (Ezra 9:15), and truthful in what He says (1 Sam. 15:29), and He wants His guests to have the same characteristics.” (Be worshipful (1st ed., pp. 63–64)
HOW DO I ENTER INTO YOUR PRESENCE, LORD?
I believe in what Christ has accomplished in dying for my sins and rising from the dead. 1 Peter 1:18-19 says, “For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from an empty life … And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.”
Then daily, You prompt me to make choices that honour You, especially about allowing You to guide my life, “seeking to lead a blameless life and doing what is right, speaking the truth from a sincere heart”. And then, when I am speaking the truth from a sincere heart, I will “refuse to gossip or harm my neighbors or speak evil of my friends”.
What else indicates my relationship with You, Lord? I always want to enter into Your Presence, Lord, with a heart that is open to You and Your ways for my life?
PSALM 15:4-5 – LOVE YOUR ENEMIES YET DESPISE FLAGRANT SINNERS?
Psalm 15:4 (NLT) says, “Those who despise flagrant sinners, and honour the faithful followers of the Lord, and keep their promises even when it hurts.”
Psalm 15:4 tells me that a person who enters into Your presence, Lord, will despise flagrant sinners. Only You, however, are capable of sinless despising of someone, even while patiently loving them, so I am going to find this difficult. How am I, on the one hand, to love my neighbours and my enemies and yet despise flagrant sinners? You don’t make things easy, Lord.
TESTER OF METALS
In Jeremiah 6:27-30 (NLT) God speaks to Jeremiah. He says, “Jeremiah, I have made you a TESTER OF METALS, that you may determine the quality of My people. They are the worst kind of rebel, full of slander. They are as hard as bronze and iron, and they lead others into corruption. The bellows fiercely fan the flames to burn out the corruption. But it does not purify them, for the wickedness remains. I will label them ‘Rejected Silver,’ for I, the Lord, am discarding them.”
Am I also to be a tester of metals to determine the quality of the lives of those around me?
If so, I will need Your discernment, Lord.
LOVE YOUR ENEMIES, DESPISE FLAGRANT SINNERS?
Matthew 5:43-47 says, “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbour’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For He gives His sunlight to both the evil and the good, and He sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that….”
How do you love and despise at the same time?
SPIRITUAL COVID
The word used of a flagrant sinner in Psalm 15:4 is ???? nimas (one abandoned to sin); A person abandoned to sin is to be despised – ???? Nibzeh. Nibzeh (despised) has the idea of regarding the person who is abandoned to sin as being contagious, as if that person was diseased with a deadly strain of Covid 19. This person may be rich, well educated, greatly honoured, or famous, but if they have Spiritual Covid 19, then they are infectious. The instruction here is to be masked against them and keep them isolated from you, and in that sense despise them.
MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE
But I have a feeling there is more to this passage than meets the eye.
Was David ruling out others from entering into the presence of God or was he the one who was having trouble living a blameless life, doing what was right, speaking the truth with a sincere heart. Was he tolerating and even admiring some flagrant sinners in his kingdom? Was he talking about how he was ruled out from dwelling in the presence of God?
Was David saying that he could not dwell in the presence of God, not only because he wasn’t a priest, but because he had gossiped and harmed his neighbours and he spoke evil of his friends? Was he the one who failed to despise flagrant sinners, such as Joab?
Was David confessing to God why he was not able to dwell in the presence of the Lord? Was this before or after David had an affair with Bathsheba and murdered her husband, Uriah? Was he admitting his failure to honour Uriah, a faithful follower of the Lord? Did he fail to keep his promises even when it hurts? Was David guilty of lending money and charging interest? Was he guilty of being bribed to lie about the innocent? Was he participating in these things or maybe simply complicit by tolerating these sins within his kingdom?
Psalms 15:1-5 (NLT) says, “Who may worship in Your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter Your presence on Your holy hill? Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts. Those who refuse to gossip or harm their neighbours or speak evil of their friends. Those who DESPISE FLAGRANT SINNERS, and honour the faithful followers of the Lord, and keep their promises even when it hurts. Those who lend money without charging interest, and who cannot be bribed to lie about the innocent. Such people will stand firm forever.” Was he saying – “Well, that rules me out”?
Even the priests could not live in the Holy of Holies where the Ark of the Covenant rested, except for one day of the year and then by the blood of a sacrifice. David seems to be ruling out everyone from entering into God’s presence. He falls short! We all fall short! In the preceding Psalm, David has already said…
“Only fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and their actions are evil; not one of them does good! The Lord looks down from heaven on the entire human race; He looks to see if anyone is truly wise, if anyone seeks God. But no, all have turned away; all have become corrupt. No one does good, not a single one!” (Psalms 14:1-3 NLT).
It seems that Jesus is the only one who has ever lived who can climb the hill of God and dwell in God’s sanctuary.
But the amazing thing is that our trust in Him enables us to join Him.
God solves David’s problem by sacrifices and a priest to represent him and the nation before God. Our problem is solved by God sending Christ as our once and for all time sacrifice and high priest…
Romans 5:10 (NLT) says, “for since our friendship with God was restored by the death of His son while we were still His enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of His Son.”
Notice we were once enemies of God. Even while we were enemies of God, His Son paid the ultimate sacrifice for us.
There was always a view towards reconciliation. When we were still God’s enemies Jesus died for us. We all fall short, yet God sent His only Son to die for our sins and enable us to enter into His presence on the basis that the price has been paid.
Yes, Christ-followers have access to God. We can live in His presence. Yet God also speaks to us who have already trusted in what Christ has done for us. Ephesians 5 God’s Words speaks of discernment and being careful to continue to rely on Him and live by His principles. Darkness is dispelled by Light. We are saved but we still need to be Testers of metal…
CAREFULLY DETERMINE…
Ephesians 5:3-15 (NLT) says, “Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people. Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God. You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshipping the things of this world.
Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey Him. Don’t participate in the things these people do. For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.
Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them. It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret. But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them, for the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said, “Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.” So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise.”
STANDING FIRM
Psalm 15:5 (NLT) ends with the words, “Such people will stand firm forever.”
(NASB) “He who does these things will never be shaken” In Christ, we stand firm. In Christ, we also carefully determine what pleases the Lord.
