Series: Biblical Cities- Sodom [#4]
SODOM- DESTROYED
Genesis 10:19
Introduction:
We are continuing in our Series about some of the most mentioned Cities in the Bible. Tonight, we are going to continue studying the city that is 4th on the list- Sodom. Sodom is mentioned 48 times in the Bible.
Genesis 10:19
After this passage, the remainder of the Scripture passages in the Old and New Testament are correlating to this punishment of sin. The Bible tells us that in the last days, it will be like the days of Noah and the days of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Genesis 19:1-4
Sodom and Gomorrah was a place where…
1. Everyone did their own thing.
There was a reason that Lot didn’t want the 2 men (angels) to stay in the town square. He knew that no one was safe. The men were angry with Lot and threatened to do him harm also.
Genesis 19:5-9
Sodom and Gomorrah was a place where…
2. Sexual perversion was rampant.
One of the best indicators of a society’s morals and ethics is its attitude concerning sex. The men of Sodom wanted to rape the 2 angels, and Lot’s solution was to offer up his 2 virgin daughters. Lot was in a difficult situation; because as host to the 2 men, they were under his protection. His solution was to offer up his daughters, and that was not good enough.
Genesis 19:10-17
Sodom and Gomorrah was a place where…
3. The spiritual condition of the people was dead.
No one believed in consequences to sin. No one was concerned about an afterlife. It was live and let live.
Genesis 19:18-26
Sodom and Gomorrah was a place where…
4. Each generation grew worse and worse.
Lot was considered to be righteous; but his wife couldn’t let go of the past. Lot’s daughters obviously had no concern for morals. They got their dad drunk and slept with him so that they could have children. Unfortunately, this is the USA. It is a place where everyone does their own thing. It is a place where sexual perversion is rampant. It is a place where the spiritual condition of the people is dead. It is a place where each generation is growing worse and worse.
Knowing that there is a problem is not enough. What are we going to do about it? I want you to notice a few mistakes that Lot made, and I want you to consider what you are going to do.
* Where are you sitting?
Lot was sitting in a place of prominence. In Lot’s day, it was the city leaders that sat by the gate. God had allowed Lot to be in a place of influence in his city. Lot was known as a city leader. God has put every one of us in a place of influence. Lot didn’t influence his city for God in any manner and when it really mattered, they didn’t believe him. Lot was not an evil guy. He protected the 2 angels; but it was too little too late. How about you?
* What are you watching?
Lot watched evil people come and go all day long. Lot saw what was going on in his city, but what could 1 person do? He took on the attitude, “If you can’t beat them, join them”. Are you going to keep watching the enemy drag off our children and grandchildren? What are you going to do about this?
* Who or what are you willing to lose?
Lot was willing to give up his 2 virgin daughters. He was willing to give up his sons-in laws. He was willing to give up his wife. He was willing to give up his city. He was willing to give up his dignity. Most of all he was willing to give up his opportunity to serve God. Even after losing almost everything and everyone, Lot allowed his daughters to get him drunk and sleep with him.
Who or what are you willing to lose? Are you willing to lose your family? Are you willing to lose your friends? Are you willing to lose your city? Are you willing to lose your dignity? Are you willing to give up your opportunity to serve God and let Him restore this generation?
