Sermon Title: David is picked.
Scripture Text: 2 Samuel 5:1-5, 9-10
5:1 Then all the tribes of Israel went to David at Hebron and told him, “We are your own flesh and blood. 2 In the past, when Saul was our king, you were the one who really led the forces of Israel. And the Lord told you, ‘You will be the shepherd of my people Israel. You will be Israel’s leader.’”
3 So there at Hebron, King David made a covenant before the Lord with all the elders of Israel. And they anointed him king of Israel.
4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in all. 5 He had reigned over Judah from Hebron for seven years and six months, and from Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah for thirty-three years.
9 So David made the fortress his home, and he called it the City of David. He extended the city, starting at the supporting terraces and working inward. 10 And David became more and more powerful, because the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies was with him.
Additional Text:
11 Then King Hiram of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar timber and carpenters and stonemasons, and they built David a palace. 12 And David realized that the Lord had confirmed him as king over Israel and had blessed his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.
=====
David was already a great leader of the military forces of Israel. He had victory's that the leaders and people were sure that David would continue. The Bible says David was a man after God’s own heart (1 Sam 13:14; Acts 13:22). Most people want to take this phrase as a reference to the moral character of David. As such, David was a man after God’s own heart in that he was committed to God’s ways and demonstrated fidelity to God’s Law. However, this viewpoint has a couple difficulties.
When we look at this text we should not interpret it as if David were a figure like Mohandas Ghandi or Martin Luther King, Jr. Rather, David is poet and musician and blood-stained warrior. He is the one who carried Goliath’s severed head back to Jerusalem and the one who could play the harp so well as to fend off the evil spirit from Saul. Right before this text he had killed two men that brought him news about Ish-bo-sheth death.
The coronation happens at Hebron. There is no crown or scepter to pass down. Rather, the people recognized the LORD’s anointing of David, the elders recognized him as king,
We must look back at 1 Samuel 16:1-13 when Samuel by the authority of God picked David to be the ruler of Israel. This was done early and the information was able to be passed along to all of Israel.
David was far from being perfect. He had moral lapse, at times he was lazy, he was even a murderer. But we must only know one thing. God picked him! The Lord told David, ‘You will be the shepherd of my people Israel. You will be Israel’s leader.
From our Scripture text today we can see two things.
1. The first thing is we don’t have to be perfect to be one of God’s own children.
a. What makes us one of His children is to confess with our hearts and believe that Jesus is the Son of God. Anyone here today that needs more understanding has persons from this congregation that can explain it. I’m always available “anytime” (that’s day or night, weekends and holidays). I want you to call or we can meet and chat about this anything.
2. Second it’s sad when Christians only really recognize Jesus as king when other choices crumble. We should choose Jesus outright, not just when other options fail.
This morning you can come to the front of the Church. We will be so happy to have you as a fellow believer. Also you can talk to a Christian friend or me after church. I’m not in a hurry to be anywhere.
Please come and meet the Savior of the World today, right now.
