"For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse." (Rom 1:20 NIV)
The Cosmos (Gk: kosmos) speaks of the world as the visible and unseen Universe, a well-ordered whole that includes everything that exists. It is intricately balanced and tailor-made for life and yet is profoundly complex and chaotic due to what was revealed in the Bible, known as the Fall of humankind (Genesis 3:1-24). At the macro level, the Cosmos appears orderly, like a clock, but at the sub-atomic level, Matter behaves chaotically. If Gravity were infinitesimally different, everything in the Universe would change.
As a young teenager, I came to the conclusion that nothing can create something, so the Universe had to have been created by a Supreme Being. It seemed far more reasonable to believe that God exists than not to believe He exists.
When someone makes the emphatic assertion that there is no God and no one can know that, that statement cannot be proven absolutely. Whether a person does or does not believe that God exists, no one has yet to explain honestly what caused the existence of what is perceived as the starting point of the Cosmos.
The Bible reveals why there is an existing universe rather than a non-existing one. It has yet to be proved and requires the element of faith to believe. Without faith, "it is impossible to please God because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him" (Hebrews 11:6 NIV).
When I became a Christian, I met the one true God through faith, but one of the questions I could never get past was, "Where did God come from?" I could relate to Jesus as God, the Son, who came to earth as a human, and somewhat understand the Holy Spirit as God, but my brain would begin to fry circuits when I tried to comprehend God, the Father, as always existing with no beginning.
"By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible." (Hebrews 11:3 NIV)
I learned that my reasoning was irrational and nonsensical by contemplating the origin of God, the Father because it implies that He lives within the Time, Space, and Matter continuum of the finite Universe that He created into existence simultaneously, and which can't be independent of each other. The Bible explains how that happened.
"In the beginning (TIME), God created the heavens (SPACE) and the earth (MATTER)." (Genesis 1:1 ESV)
God instantly created Time, Space, and Matter as a trinity of trinities. Time is past, present, and future; Space has length, width, and height; Matter has solid, liquid, and gas. God is outside of them and not limited or affected by them because He is a spirit with no material body (John 4:24).
The truth is that God has no beginning - He IS! (Exodus 3:14). The Bible tells us why the Universe exists and proclaims that Jesus is the divine Designer who created it with a purpose and maintains all things by the word of His power (John 1:3; Hebrews 1:2-3; Colossians 1:16-17).
After speaking the Cosmos and Earth into existence, He created the first human beings.
"Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:26-27 ESV)
God instantly created human beings with a brain that has independent reasoning processes and thoughts and not just a random collection of chemicals formed by chance over a billion+ years.
Since Adam and Eve, God has revealed Himself to every human being in the beauty of the heavens, "for since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse" (Romans 1:18-20 NIV).
Man-made Science is limited to investigations within the material, physical world. Until the beginning of the 20th century, scientists thought that the classical physics of Sir Isaac Newton, who assumed that all the physical processes of nature and the infinite Universe worked like a clock in an ordered and predictable way, should be observed like a logical and mechanical clock. Scientists also believe that natural laws govern the Universe in an orderly fashion. When they began to explore the relationship between energy and the structure of Matter, they discovered that the theories of Newtonian mechanics and electromagnetism, which describe spatial motion, completely fell apart at the quantum or extremely tiny atomic and sub-atomic scales.
The word "quantum" is Latin for the amount and means of the smallest possible discrete unit of any physical property, such as energy or Matter. It came into usage in 1900 when the physicist Max Planck used it to present to the German Physical Society. As a result, the belief began that everything in the Cosmos is made out of energy.
Albert Einstein is considered the Father of the General Theory of Relativity, which superseded Newton's theory of Gravity. In 1915 he discovered a mathematical way to explain Gravity and how it affects time, such as how and why planets stay in orbit and the dynamics of the expanding Universe. This ultimately led to the discovery of atomic energy, which has been used to harm and help humanity.
Quantum Physics has fundamentally different formulations and incompatible descriptions of reality than the Theory of Relativity, which allows connections that are inconsistent with classical Physics. Einstein tried to find flaws in the counterintuitive predictions of Quantum theory but could not.
It is fair and legitimate to say that the old naturalistic Newtonian assumptions are being critically reexamined and challenged because they don't convincingly answer all the questions about the intelligent design, origin, and function of the unique Cosmos we live in.
There is no God?
A person who makes the bold assertion that there is no God and no one can know if there is cannot prove it, which logically opens the door to acknowledging the idea or possibility that God may exist. Proving that God does not exist requires faith or the ability to travel the entire Cosmos and examine every Quantum particle to qualify and have the authority to make that assertion which would make them God!
The Science of Quantum Mechanics is a branch of physics that attempts to observe, calculate, measure, and understand the unpredictable behavior of Matter (particles), light, and energy occurring at the atomic level of the micro-world within the present continuum of Time, Space, and Matter. It is a complicated field of study that attempts to answer questions about the Universe while simultaneously creating more questions than answers. The study of Quantum Mechanics has developed new technology in electronics such as Quantum Computers, TVs, smartphones, microwave technologies, and fiber-optic communications.
The Quantum world operates under dramatically different laws than the physical macro-world of conditions, events, and circumstances. It then attempts to break them down into their most basic forms at the sub-atomic level to discover how everything in the Cosmos has come into existence and the source from which they were derived.
Quantum Physics is the name used for a more general study in Science and is a collection of quantum theories such as non-relativistic quantum mechanics and quantum field theory. For the sake of continuity, I will be using the words' Quantum Physics' from this point forward.
Quantum Physics deals in probabilities rather than exact predictions when describing the random temporal motion of a given particle at a particular time. It offers a mathematical description of the activity and interaction of sub-atomic particles. Since the inception of Quantum Physics, Scientists have struggled with the meaning and implications, resulting in many different predictions and even some philosophical and mystical interpretations, which are seen to both validate and substantiate them and simultaneously defy logical common sense as well.
There is no accepted conceptual interpretation of Quantum Physics, and a few skeptical scientists reject its validity entirely. However, despite some challenging ideas, the numerous predictions of Quantum Physics have never been disproved in any experiment in over a century of development. This is the farthest level science can go until a new set of scientific rules is formulated.
The Quantum Faith Challenge
The mention of Quantum Physics within the church seems eerie, complex, overwhelming, intimidating, or hard to understand when considering what the Bible teaches about Creation and the order of the Cosmos. However, based on genuine research and study, it is no threat to the orthodox teachings of the founders of the faith and writers of the New Testament.
"By faith, we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible." (Hebrews 11:3 NIV)
The study of the Bible requires faith that comes via special divine revelation that only the Bible reveals (John 15:26; 2 Peter 1:19-21). Faith is active trust in God, who made Himself seen in His Creation. The Bible says that it is Jesus who supplies the infinite amount of energy that holds all things together and sustains the entire Cosmos. It is the revealed general revelation of "His invisible qualities" - His "eternal power and divine nature" that "have been clearly seen" [and] understood from what has been made" by God, which makes evident within the mechanical workings of nature the existence of God and any observer accountable to Him (Romans 1:20 NIV). However, the study of Nature or the Cosmos cannot unequivocally prove the existence of God even though the Bible declares that it was through Jesus Christ that all things originated from Him (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16; Hebrews 1:2).
The methodology of study used by Christians is very similar to that used by physicists. Human beings cannot see beyond the boundaries imposed by Time, Space, and Matter into realities other than what God has already revealed in the Bible. Any personal "vision" of Creation outside of the restrictions that faith imposes within Scripture contradicts what faith means.
The astounding and mind-boggling discoveries of Quantum Physics are often quoted as an explanation to justify some downright silly interpretations being taught within, as well as outside, the church that tries to expand the discoveries of Quantum Physics using hyper-spiritual metaphysical and philosophical speculation and then turning it into pseudo-scientific mystical physics and a heretical "quantum spirituality" that has a zero scientific basis. Quantum Physics does not require the suspension of the essential rule of common sense to understand it. As an adage says - if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Some pseudo-scientist mystics propagate that everything in the Cosmos is a gigantic, impersonal, vibrating sphere of interconnected energy. They believe that everything is one and can communicate through thought with each other with no regard to Time, Space, and Matter. It is thought that the 'deity,' and 'its' voice, fills every atom in the Universe, which means 'it' is in everything. Therefore there is no need for the sacrifice of Jesus Christ as the only way of salvation for every human being.
The Bible says that only those who know Jesus Christ as God have the actual Creator of the Universe within them rather than a 'god' being in all people.
"But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his." (Romans 8:9 KJV)
One of many themes running through the Bible is that human beings are not the master of their destiny throughout life. No one can think things into being except God. The findings of Quantum Physics do not show that consciousness can influence reality directly so that a person can use their positive thoughts to change their future reality, health, or economic well-being.
Despite the high-sounding spiritual nonsense being taught about Quantum Physics, it is not as hard to understand as one might think. Let me restate that there is nothing found within the Quantum world that is to be feared in view of the Bible. The study offers an intriguing look at Creation and opens the door for some legitimate and challenging reevaluation of man-made church dogma that has been taught for centuries.
The question for you today is who, what, or how do you think the Universe came into existence? Jesus said He created it all and is worthy to be worshipped, honored, and adored. He proved that when He chose to become human, enter the world He created, and then sacrifice Himself through death to provide the ONLY way to spend eternity with Him.
Today, it is time to choose whom you will serve – the created or the Creator.
