A Biblical Account of Jesus’ Resurrection:
•The following is a chronological compilation of the biblical record of Jesus’ resurrection using all four Gospels.
•We will close with the record of Jesus’ ascension from the first chapter of the Book of Acts.
•Following the record of Jesus’ ascension, we will then reveal the grave importance of Jesus’ resurrection & ascension, by applying 1Corinthinas 15:1-20, :50, :53-57.
Mk. 15:25
“Now it was the third hour[9:00 A.M], & they crucified Him.”
Mat. 27:45-46
“Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour[3:00 P.M.] there was darkness over all the land. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”[Cf.-Ps. 22]
Jn. 19:28-30
“After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; & they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, & put it to His mouth. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.”
Lk. 23:46
“And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’” Having said this, He breathed His last.
Mat. 27:51-52
“Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; & the earth quaked, & the rocks were split,.”
Mat. 27:54-56; Mk. 15:39-41
“So when the centurion & those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake & the things that had happened,”.....“that He cried out like this & breathed His last,”.....“they feared greatly, saying,”.....“Truly this Man was the Son of God!” There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less & of Joses, & Salome,”.....“...the mother of Zebedee’s sons”.....“who also followed Him & ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, & many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.” Jn. 19:31ff.
“Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath(for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, & that they might be taken away. Then the soldiers came & broke the legs of the first & of the other who was crucified with Him. But when they came to Jesus & saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, & immediately blood & water came out. And he who has seen has testified, & his testimony is true; & he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe. For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, “Not one of His bones shall be broken.” And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”
Lk. 23:50-52
“Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good & just man. He had not consented to their decision & deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate & asked for the body of Jesus.”
Mk. 15:44-45
“Pilate marveled that He was already dead; & summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time. So when he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.”
Jn. 19:38-41
“...So he came & took the body of Jesus. And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh & aloes, about a hundred pounds. Then they took the body of Jesus, & bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, & in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.”
Mat. 27:59-60
“When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, & laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; & he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, & departed.”
Jn. 19:42
“So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.”
Mat. 27:61
“And Mary Magdalene was there, & the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb.”
Mat. 27:62-66
“On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests & Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, saying, “Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise.’ “Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night & steal Him away, & say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ So the last deception will be worse than the first.” Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go your way, make it as secure as you know how.” So they went & made the tomb secure, sealing the stone & setting the guard.”
Mat. 28:2-4
“And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, & came & rolled back the stone from the door, & sat on it. His countenance was like lightning, & his clothing as white as snow. And the guards shook for fear of him, & became like dead men.”
Mk. 16:1-2; Lk. 24:1, 2
“Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, & Salome bought spices, that they might come & anoint Him. Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.”.....“...bringing the spices which they had prepared. And they said among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?” “But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.”
Jn. 20:1-8, 10
“Then she[Mary Magdalene] ran & came to Simon Peter, & to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, & said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, & we do not know where they have laid Him.” Peter therefore went out, & the other disciple, & were going to the tomb. So they both ran together, & the other disciple outran Peter & came to the tomb first. And he, stooping down & looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, & went into the tomb; & he saw the linen cloths lying there, & the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; & he saw & believed.”.....“Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.”
Lk. 24:3-9, 11; Jn. 20:9
“Then they[the women] went in & did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. Then, as they were afraid & bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, “saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, & be crucified, & the third day rise again.’” And they remembered His words. Then they returned from the tomb & told all these things to the eleven & to all the rest.”.....“And their words seemed to them like idle tales, & they did not believe them.”.....“For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. Jn. 20:11-18
“But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, & as she wept she stooped down & looked into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head & the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, & I do not know where they have laid Him.” Now when she had said this, she turned around & saw Jesus standing there, & did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, & I will take Him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned & said to Him, “Rabboni!”(which is to say, Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren & say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father & your Father, & to My God & your God.’” Mary Magdalene came & told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, & that He had spoken these things to her.”
Mat. 28:16
“Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them.”
Mat. 28:11-15
“Now while they were going, behold, some of the guard came into the city & reported to the chief priests all the things that had happened. When they had assembled with the elders & consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, saying, “Tell them, ‘His disciples came at night & stole Him away while we slept.’ “And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will appease him & make you secure.” So they took the money & did as they were instructed; & this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.
Mat. 28:17-20
“When they[the 11 disciples] saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came & spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven & on earth. Go therefore & make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father & of the Son & of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; & lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen.”
Acts 1:3-8
Acts 1:3-5—“...He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days & speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; & you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, & in all Judea & Samaria, & to the end of the earth.” “Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, & a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”
Without Jesus’ Resurrection, He could not ascend into heaven.
Without His death, burial, resurrection, & ascension, He cannot return for those who trust in Him.
Because of Jesus’ resurrection, God’s people have every true & good reason to gather, teach, learn, sing, preach, pray, give, live, & glorify our God continuously, thru our Living Lord Jesus, by His Holy Spirit!
RESURRECTION DAY APPLICATION/Invitation:
2Cor. 5:21
“For He[God] made Him[God the Son] who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
You cannot be “the righteousness of God in Him” if you are without Jesus’ resurrection!
1Cor. 15:1-20, :50, :53-57—“If CHRIST Is NOT RISEN...”
It is absolutely RIDICULOUS for a truly ‘born-again’, ‘new creation in Christ’, ’blood-bought’ Christian, to ‘NOT’ believe that Christ has been raised from the dead!—(READ & Interpret as Spirit led):
[Paul writes:]“Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received & in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you--unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, & that He was buried, & that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, & that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time. For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, & His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. Therefore, whether it was I or they, so we preach & so you believed. Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty & your faith is also empty. Yes, & we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up--if in fact the dead do not rise. For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable. But now Christ is risen from the dead, & has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.”.....“Now this I say, brethren, that flesh & blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption.”.....“For this corruptible must put on incorruption, & this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, & this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” The sting of death is sin, & the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Rom. 4:25-5:2
“who was delivered up because of our offenses, & was raised because of our justification. Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, & rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”
Eph. 2:4-5, 8-9
“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ(by grace you have been saved),”.....“For by grace you have been saved through faith, & that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
Jesus was intentionally committed to the Cross by God His Father. Those who saw to Jesus’ death were, unbeknownst to them, accomplishing God’s perfect will all along, so that your sin would be paid for in full!...by the cleansing blood(signaling the death) of the one-&-only divine Son of God.
‘Jesus’ willingly left heaven’s glory(Jn. 1:1-4) to take on human flesh(Php. 2:5-11), so that He could pay the price that no other man could or can pay. Jesus came to earth(Php. 2:4-11) so that your sin could be covered by His blood(Rom. 3:21-25; Rom. 5:8-9; Rev. 1:4-6).
The question you personally must answer is, “Is there any way that my sin might not be covered by Jesus blood?”
•The answer is that there is only one way that the worst could happen to you—that your sin would definitely NOT be covered by Jesus blood...And that would be if you continue to choose to NOT place faith in Jesus!...By denying His eternality, divinity, virgin birth, humanity, sacrifice, death, burial, resurrection, ascension, living.
So, the reality is...you cannot stand before God, apart from trusting the resurrected & ever-Living Lord Jesus!
*Do you believe these things, & do you trust Jesus, Implicitly-Unconditionally-Unreservedly-Unhesitatingly-Completely-Unashamedly, Fully, & Without Doubt?!
