week 2 - The Name - Immanuael - Jesus

INTRODUCTION:
Like a great mystery movie, the revelation of God as Trinity is a holy mystery that progressively unfolds throughout the Old and New Testaments. But the biblical revelation of a triune God is not just a doctrine to be studied.
It is a profound truth that stands at the heart of the Christian Gospel.
THE TRINITY IS PROGRESSIVELY REVEALED THROUGHOUT SCRIPTURE The Old Testament Is The New Testament Concealed And The New Testament Is The Old Testament Revealed
Genesis 1:26 “Then God (singular) said, ‘Let us (plural) make man in our image, in our likeness…’”
Genesis 3:22 And the LORD God (singular) said, “The man has now become like one of us (plural)…”
Matthew 28:19 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…”
THE TRINITY CONSISTS OF THREE PERSONS
? The Father Is Not The Son
John 1:1-2 1 “In the beginning was the Word (The Son), and the Word was with God (The Father), and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.”
?The Son Is Not The Holy Spirit
John 14:26 “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name (The Son), will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
?The Spirit Is Not The Father
1 Peter 1:1-2 “To God’s elect…who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by His blood.”
? EACH PERSON IS FULLY GOD
?The Father Is God
2 Thessalonians 1:2 “Grace and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
? The Son Is God
John 8:58 “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” John 20:28 “Thomas said to Him, ‘My Lord and my God!’”
? The Spirit Is God
Acts 5:3-4 3 “Then Peter said, ‘Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit… 4 You have not lied to men but to God.’”
? GOD IS ONE
Deuteronomy 6:4 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.”
? The Trinity – Is so unique. Think about Islam, for example. Muslims deny the Trinity. They see God as a sequestered god, a god you can’t really know, and an authoritarian god. Look at nations where Islam rules -- you have dictators. Look at the Muslim family. There is a strong pecking order. The man is the man, and he is more important than the woman.
?Think about Mormonism. Mormons deny the Trinity. In Mormonism, everybody is a god. You’re a god. He’s a god. She’s a god. Everywhere a god, god. I’m not saying that to make fun of Mormons. That’s a fact. They deny the Trinity.
?Jehovah’s Witnesses deny the Trinity. They feel that God the Father created God the Son
?One sect of Hinduism denotes over 330 million different gods. They, obviously, deny the Trinity
?Buddhism is just a philosophy of life. So, to sit there and say, “Yeah, all the world religions are kind of the same…
” Hello? They are not.
We love Muslims. We love Buddhists. We love Hindus. We love Jehovah’s Witnesses. We are to build bridges of love to them at The Bridge Church. But, we are going to draw lines in the sand.
We are going to say, “Here is our standard. Here is truth. Here is how God has revealed himself to us in this holy mystery.”
As believers, we need to understand this. We don’t need to argue people into the kingdom. We need to love them by speaking the truth cloaked in compassion.
WE TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT THE NAME
The name reveals His
1] CHARACTER = Personality (Emmanuel — God With Us)
?Reveals a Supernatural Baby
Not just another child, but God in human flesh, John 1:14 (NKJV)
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
? Reveals a Supernatural Birth
Not a normal birth, but a virgin birth, which produced a child without a sin nature.
Isaiah 7:14 (NKJV)
14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
? Reveals a Supernatural Battler
Why would God enter this world? He came to fight a battle that humanity could never wage or win. He came to do battle with Satan and sin.
? 1 Samuel 17:47 (NKJV)
47 Then all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD'S, and He will give you into our hands."
2] CAUSE = Purpose - Jesus — Jehovah Is Salvation
? Speaks of His Desire
The name Jesus reveals a God with a desire to save sinners. We are told that Jesus came into this world not to condemn the lost, but to save them. This was not a new desire, but it was the heartbeat of God even before the world was formed.
God's plan was conceived in eternityPAST and PURPOSED OUT as time marched on.
? Speaks of His Deliverance
The name Jesus reminds us that He came into this world for the sole purpose of setting the “captives” free
? Speaks of His Death
The name Jesus reminds us of the fact that He came into this world to die for our sins. The only way the sin problem could have been dealt with is through the shedding of blood
3] CAPACITY = Power
? “His name shall be called…” Note the word “name” is singular and not plural. Not His “names”, His “name.” Jesus displays all the following characteristics at he same time
?He Is the Supernatural One
This word means Miracle, Supernatural, Secret and Extraordinary,
?He is the Miracle Man! Men cannot comprehend Him, but He can be believed on by the smallest child. He is wonderful!
