Summary: When the enemy comes against you, trust God to give you a breakthrough.

And David came to Baalperazim, and David smote them there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore, he called the name of that place Baalperazim.

The reason why I have docked my discourse on this spiritual document, which details some dealings of King David, is because the people of England and the people of France had a mutual problem, not since the Ice Ages had there been a land-built connection between the two countries.

And my brothers and my sister: What separated them was a large body of water, known as the English Channel. Years ago, they began discussing ways that they could solve the problem was by connecting the two countries.

One idea was to build a bridge over the ocean that would stretch from England to France, but that idea was soon dismissed as being logistically or financially impossible.

They then decided that the best way to resolve the problem and connect the countries was by building an underground tunnel beneath the English Channel.

So, it was in the summer of 1987 the crews on the English side began to dig; shortly thereafter the crews on the French side began to dig.

And they tunneled through millions of tons, of rocks, dirt, and debris at an average depth of 150 feet beneath the English Channel.

When the tunnel diggers from England and France finally met each other under the tunnel they had an historic breakthrough, the project was completed some 7 years later in 1994, and now for the first time since the Ice Ages there is a land-built connecting England and France.

Now this remarkable achievement of engineering is a testament to the creative Prowers of the human will, cooperation, and determination. And now we have what the English and French speaking people respectively call the Euro and the Channel tunnel, which stretches some 31 miles from England to France.

The people of England and France had a problem, and their problem was not solved until they had an underground breakthrough. And in a real sense someone who is looking at me right now, you’re facing some problems in this life that you cannot solve on your own, and simply put like the people of England and the people of France there seems to be an ocean of problems between you and your blessings, your purpose, and your destiny. And what you need, is a breakthrough from God.

Now what is a breakthrough: In a military sense a breakthrough is an attack that penetrates an enemy’s line of defense.

In a spiritual sense, a breakthrough is a supernatural move of God where he moves issues out of your way, anything that the devil has placed in your way, and the truth of the matter is; there is no obstacle that God cannot move out of your way.

But here is a nugget. The fact of the matter is obstacles, and obstructions, are really opportunities that God uses in order to demonstrate that he has the power to bring us through.

So, when we are experiencing obstacles, and obstructions that we cannot solve or handle on our own, the good news is that we have some options. What are the options Pastor? Well you can either have a break-up, or a break down, or you can trust God for a breakthrough.

And I know that some of you that are looking at me this morning, I know that you might have with a smile on your face, and hallelujahs on your lips, and up lifted hands, but if the truth was to be told, behind all of that you’ve some of us have been catching hell on every hand, some of us have more problems than we can count.

I know that I’m not the only one on the live this morning. I’m talking to someone who’s at their wits end, and feels like giving up. But I want to tell you this morning that it’s not time to quit, don’t you give up right now, because as long as God is on the throne, he’s the God who has the power to provide a breakthrough.

And I believe David in this text gives us some principles and truths to help us get a breakthrough.

But the first question that needs to be address is, what make you eligible for a breakthrough? What is that you need to qualify you for a breakthrough?

The first thing that qualifies you is for a breakthrough is that you first must have a problem.

Verse 17 says: Now when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David as king of all Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David, and David heard of it and went down to the stronghold.

So, now what is this problem that David is facing, let me suggest to you that it was not caused by some sin in David’s life, or by some indiscretion in his judgment, but when you read the context of the text you get an understanding of what David’s problem was. At the time of this text David’s predecessor, Saul is now dead, and David had been elevated to becoming King of all Judah, which at that time was just one tribe, and the Philistines didn’t have a problem with David as long as he was King over Judah, (one tribe) but by the time we get to this text, David is being further elevated to becoming King over all of Israel, both northern and southern kingdoms.

His enemies the Philistines the ongoing enemies of Israel didn’t have a problem as long as he was King over one tribe, or a small territory if you will, but when God elevated him to becoming King over all of Israel that’s when the enemy got bent out of shape.

Let me pause here parenthetically and say, people don’t mind you having power, or being bless, as long as your power, and your blessing is of a size they believe you are able to handle. But when God elevates you, and blesses you, beyond what people think you ought to have that’s when your haters get bent out of shape.

People don’t mind you driving a nice car, just don’t drive one as nice as theirs.

They don’t mind you living in a beautiful house just don’t live in one as better than theirs.

They don’t mind you making money just don’t make as much as they make.

But what they don’t understand is that when God elevates you, your power, your life, and increases your blessings to a size that they can’t see, and they can’t handle, that’s when they get bent out of shape, and they will try to assassinate your character, and bring you down.

God had elevated David, but the Philistines were determined to tear David down, and to keep him from walking in his destiny.

Watch this: Whenever there is divine elevation there will always be demonic agitation; because the Devil cannot stand to see you blessed: watch this, even just the rumor of your blessings will bother some people.

Look at it, it’s right here in the text. The text says Now when the Philistines, heard that they had anointed David, they didn’t even know it first-hand they just heard it second hand, and when they heard of David’s blessing, they tried to take David down.

But isn’t that just like the Devil, whatever God lift up, you can rest assure that the Devil tries to tear it down:

God elevates Adam and Eve in the garden, but Satan tried to bring them down,

He elevated Joseph, but his jealous brothers tried to bring him down,

He elevated Elijah, but Ahab and Jezebel tried to bring him down,

Nehemiah elevated the wall but Sanbalid, Tobiah, and Geshim tried to bring him down,

He elevated Daniel, but jealous people tried to bring him down

He elevated Samson, but Delilah tried to bring him down,

He elevated Paul, but the church people tried to bring him down.

He elevated Jesus and the Pharisees tried to bring him

down, because whatever God lifts-up, you can rest assure that the Devil tries to bring it down, and that’s why you have to keep your Prayer life in tune and stay connected to Christ and with the God who covers you because as God elevates you, you can rest assure that there’s a Demon somewhere that will try to bring you down.

Preach Pastor S.P.I.E.S. Preach

The problem that David had was that he had a destiny, but he also had haters that were trying to keep him from walking in his destiny, and in his purpose, and whenever anything comes between you and your purpose it is then that I submit you need a breakthrough from God.

So, there has to be a problem, a challenge, a struggle, a crisis that dictates, compels, and calls for a breakthrough experience, and if you don’t have any problems then you don’t need a breakthrough, so stop cursing your problems because your problems are really only props that God uses in order to set the stage to give you a breakthrough experience.

Now what kind of breakthrough do you need? Well, it depends on the kind of problem you are facing: For some of you, you need a health breakthrough. You went to the Doctor and they found some irregularities on your test and you need God to give you a health breakthrough.

For someone else you need a financial breakthrough there seems to be too much month left at the end of your check and you need God to give you a financial breakthrough.

For someone you may need a domestic breakthrough, you and yours aren’t getting along, your marriage is in trouble, but people who look at you, they would think that everything is going well, both of you deserve an academy award for the way you front as if things are alright, but the truth is you need God to supply a breakthrough in your marriage. The list could go on.

But then someone in here may need the ultimate breakthrough you need a breakthrough of salvation for Jesus Christ to break-up that fallow ground of your heart and to save your soul.

For someone they need a spiritual breakthrough, you tired of taking two steps forward, only to find yourself taking three steps backward, because you keep falling in the same old sin.

Well, I’ve got some good news for you today, the God we serve specializes in breakthrough experiences my mother would say it this way: “Have you any rivers that seem uncross-able have you any mountains that you cannot tunnel through, God specializes in things that appear to be impossible and he will do what no other power can do.

Breakthroughs are needed whenever there is a problem but 2ndly breakthroughs are needed: Whenever we pray:

Verse 19 says: So, David inquired of the Lord saying; shall I go up against the Philistines will you deliver them into my hand? And the Lord said to David go up for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into your hand.

We must understand that David was not a novice when it came to fighting, if he knew anything he knew two things, he knew how to worship, and he knew about warfare.

David was a military genius who had led the armies of Saul into a countless number of victories, he was an experience man of war, and you would think that anybody with David’s military experience, with David’s military resume that he would not need to pray about fighting, I mean, why pray about what you’re good at, but what I like about David is, he was not presumptuous, he did not depend on his own ability, but he had

a dependency on God.

He asks God should I go, and will you deliver them into my hand, in other words is this a battle that you want me to fight. David was good at fighting, but David trusted in God. So, many times, the devil tricks us into not having a dependency on God especially gifted people, many times when you are gifted if you’re not careful you’ll find yourself trusting in your gift and not the giver; But this text is designed to teach us that we need to learn how to depend on God. So, many times, we do things without trusting God but that’s why Solomon said; Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not to thy own understanding, (Oh, what peace we often forfeit oh what needless pain we bare all because we do not carry everything to GOD in prayer)

But I’ve discovered that we have to fight for our breakthroughs, look at verse 20 it says: So, David went to Baal-parism and David defeated them there. Notice in verse 19 David is praying, in verse 20 David is fighting.

David understood that there is a place for prayer if i’m going to have a breakthrough but there is also a place of warfare.

In other words, James said it like this faith without works is dead, (pray for job, but fill out app) when you think about what was at stake David had no choice but to fight, his destiny was on the line.

God’s purpose for his life was on the line; and whenever anything threatens the will of God for your life it’s time to fight.

David seems to say if this was a smaller matter, I’d let you slide but you’re talking about stopping me from reaching my purpose, and my divine assignment.

Let me ask you, is there anything in your life worth fighting for. When I talk about fighting, I’m not talking about physical fighting because the Bible say we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and spiritual wickedness in high places.

Now understand that the Devil is not just going to sit down and let you have a happy marriage, leave your children alone, and let you progress.

Sometimes You’ve got to anoint that house with oil, and pray in the name of Jesus. Devil I’m not going to lay down and let you have my family, my future, if you want it you’ve got to come through me. And you’ve got to be careful when you mess with me because I’m more than a conquer; greater is he that’s in me than he that’s in the world.

Verse 20 says; after David won the battle, he gave the credit to God. Then it says and he named that place in honor of God, he named that place Baal-parism; which means the Lord who breaksthrough.

He says he broke through like a breakthrough of water; the metaphorical picture here is that of a river that is about to flood the city, but the men in the town erect dams and dikes in order to hold back the raging river but the pressure of the river is so great that the dam cannot hold up, and the rivers over floods the city, he says that’s what God did to my enemies.

After you get your breakthrough don’t let your Guards down, because they attack them in verse 18, David defeated them in verse 20, and you would think that they had enough, but they attack them again in verse 22, what the enemy did was retreated, regroup, so they could re-attack them in the same place.

If the devil’s not bothering you now, don’t let your guard down, he might have just simply retreated, to regroup, so he can re-attack you in the same place.

Now the 3rd and final thing I want to tell you is, be willing to wait for your breakthrough: You’ve got to pray for it you’ve got to spiritually fight for it, but then you’ve got to wait for it.

David in verse 22, 23 says to God, should I attack them again, and God says no David don’t attack them just yet.

Because the first time you attacked them with a frontal attack; but this time I want you to circle and wait behind them and I want you to wait by the mulberry trees. I want to tell you God may not give you, your breakthrough this time the same way he gave it the first time. But no matter how he does it, God knows what he’s doing.

God says to David don’t move but wait, and that’s one of the hardest things for us to do is wait, you want your blessing right now, but God says just wait.

He says to David wait, and when you hear the sound of marching up in the top of the mulberry trees, then you attack. In other words, God was saying don’t do anything down here until you hear something up there.

Tell your neighbor to wait until you hear from God, I know you’ve been waiting a long time, but just hold on.

CLOSE

He says the Philistines tried to become a dam between me and my destiny, but I went to God and God gave me a breakthrough, and I like David when he says “I named that place in honor of God” and whenever God give a breaks through it’s a time for us to praise him: You need to say Lord it wasn’t because of how smart I am, where I went to school, because if it had not been for you Lord on my side, I would not have made it.
