Summary: CHAPTERS 1 AND 2 ARE THE PROPHET’S COMPLAINT AND GOD’S ANSWER. CHAPTER 3 IS ABOUT GOD'S PEOPLE SAVED / THE SOLUTION /THE PROPHET’S PRAYER

Chaldeans (S.IRAQ) Used to Punish Judah, about 600 BC / King Jehoiakim (c/o Marilyn Hickey Ministries)

Chapter 1 The (question) (A)pronouncement which Habakkuk the prophet saw:

2 (B)How long, LORD, have I called for help, And You do not hear? I cry out to You, “Violence!” Yet You do (C)not save. IT’S OK TO ASK QUESTIONS.

3 Why do You make me (D)see disaster, And make me look at destitution? Yes, (E)devastation and violence are before me; (F)Strife exists and contention arises.

4 Therefore the (G)Law [a]is ignored, And justice [b]is never upheld. For the wicked H)surround the righteous; Therefore justice comes out (I)confused.

5 “(J)Look among the nations! Watch! Be horrified! (K)Be frightened speechless! For I am accomplishing (L)a work in your days—You would not believe it even if [c]you were told! THIS IS THE ANSWER TO VERSE 2’S QUESTION.

6 For behold, I am (M)raising up the Chaldeans, That [d]grim and impetuous people Who march [e]throughout the earth, To (N)take possession of dwelling places that are not theirs.

7 They are terrifying and (O)feared; Their (P)justice and [f]authority [g]originate with themselves.

8 Their (Q)horses are faster than leopards, And quicker than (R)wolves in the evening.

Their [h]horsemen charge along, Their [i]horsemen come from afar; They fly like an (S)eagle [j]swooping down to devour.

9 All of them come for violence. [k]Their horde of (T)faces moves forward. They gather captives like sand.

10 They (U)make fun of kings, And dignitaries are an object of laughter to them. They (V)laugh at every fortress, Then (W)heap up dirt and [l]capture it.

11 Then they fly along like the (X)wind and pass on. But they will be held (Y)guilty, They whose (Z)strength is their god.” THE FOLLOWING ARE THE 2ND QUESTIONS.

12 Are You not from (AA)time everlasting, LORD, my God, my Holy One? We will not die. You, LORD, have (AB)appointed them to deliver judgment; And You, O (AC)Rock, have destined them to punish. GOD IS OUTSIDE OF TIME. JESUS IS THE ROCK SONG

13 Your eyes are too (AD)pure to look at evil, And You cannot look at harm favorably.

Why do You (AE)look favorably At those who deal (AF)treacherously? Why are You (AG)silent when the wicked (AH)swallow up Those more righteous than they? GOD IS PATIENT.

14 Why have You made people like the fish of the sea, Like crawling things that have no ruler over them? ?

15 The Chaldeans (AI)bring all of them up with a hook, (AJ)Drag them away with their net,

And gather them together in their fishing net. Therefore they rejoice and are joyful.

16 Therefore they offer a sacrifice to their net And [m]burn incense to their fishing net,

Because through (AK)these things their [n]catch is [o]large, And their food is [p]plentiful.

17 Will they therefore empty their (AL)net, And continually (AM)slay nations without sparing?

God Answers the Prophet, urging His people to wait and have patience.

Chapter 2 I will (A)stand at my guard post And station myself on the watchtower; And I will (B)keep watch to see (C)what He will say to me, And how I may reply [a]when I am reprimanded. WE NEED TO LISTEN TO GOD.

2 Then the LORD answered me and said, “(D)Write down the vision And inscribe it clearly on tablets, So that one who [b]reads it may run. THIS IS WHY WE’RE READING IT. THIS IS THE ANSWER TO THE SECOND QUESTIONS.

3 For the vision is yet for the (E)appointed time; It [c]hurries toward the goal and it will not [d]fail. Though it delays, (F)wait for it; For it will certainly come, it (G)will not delay long.

4 “Behold, as for the (H)impudent one, His soul is not right within him; But the (I)righteous one will live by his [e]faith. THE JUST WILL LIVE BY FAITH. Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:11, Hebrews 10:38. Martin Luther the Reformer wrote on this.

5 Furthermore, (J)wine betrays an (K)arrogant man, So that he does not (L)achieve his objective.

He (M)enlarges his appetite like Sheol, And he is like death, never satisfied. He also gathers to himself all the nations And collects to himself all the peoples. ABODE OF THE DEAD

6 “Will all of these not (N)take up a song of ridicule against him, Even a saying and insinuations against him And say, ‘(O)Woe to him who increases what is not his—

For how long—And makes himself [f]rich with debts!’ VERSES 6-8 = A SONG OF WOE

7 Will [g]your creditors not (P)rise up suddenly, And those who [h]collect from you awaken?

Indeed, you will become plunder for them. BE CAREFUL OF DEBT.

8 Since you have (Q)looted many nations, All the rest of the peoples will loot you—Because of human bloodshed and violence [i]done to the land, To the town and all its inhabitants.

9 “Woe to him who makes (R)evil profit for his household, To (S)put his nest on high,

To be saved from the hand of catastrophe! BE CAREFUL OF GREED.

10 You have planned a (T)shameful thing for your house By bringing many peoples to an end; So you are (U)sinning against yourself. VERSES 9-11=ANOTHER SONG OF WOE

11 For the (V)stone will cry out from the wall, And the rafter will answer it from the [j]framework. AIN’T NO ROCK GONNA CRY IN MY PLACE WAS A POPULAR SONG IN THE 1990s.

12 “Woe to him who (W)builds a city with bloodshed, And founds a town with [k]violence!

13 Is it not indeed from the LORD of armies That peoples (X)labor merely for fire,

And nations become weary for nothing? VERSES 12-14 ARE ANOTHER SONG OF WOE

14 For the earth will be (Y)filled With the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, As the waters cover the sea. THIS IS A KEY VERSE, MARILYN HICKEY MINISTRIES USES IT.

15 “Woe to him who makes his neighbor drink; [l]To you who mix in your venom even to make your neighbors drunk, So as to look at their genitalia! THIS IS GRAPHIC.

16 You will be filled with disgrace rather than honor. (Z)Drink, you yourself, and [m]expose your own foreskin! THIS ALSO IS GRAPHIC. The (AA)cup in the LORD’S right hand will come around to you, And (AB)utter disgrace will come upon your glory. VERSES 15-17 = SONG OF WOE

17 For the (AC)violence [n]done to Lebanon will [o]overwhelm you, And the devastation of its animals [p]by which you terrified them, (AD)Because of human bloodshed and (AE)violence [q]done to the land, To the town and all its inhabitants. THERE WERE 178 KILLED IN AUGUST 2020 IN LEBANON.

18 “What (AF)benefit is a carved image when its maker has carved it, Or a cast metal image, a (AG)teacher of falsehood? For its maker (AH)trusts in his own handiwork When he fashions speechless idols.

19 Woe to him who (AI)says to a piece of wood, ‘(AJ)Awake!’ To a mute stone, ‘Arise!’ That is your teacher? Behold, it is overlaid with (AK)gold and silver, Yet there is (AL)no breath at all inside it.

20 But the (AM)LORD is in His holy temple. [r]Let all the earth (AN)be silent before Him.” DO WE SPEND ENOUGH QUIET TIME WITH THE LORD TO LISTEN?

VERSES 18-20 ARE THE FINAL SONG OF WOE.

God’s People Saved / The Solution / THE PROPHET’S PRAYER

CHAPTER 3: 1 A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, according to [a]Shigionoth. EMOTIONAL POEM

2 LORD, I have (A)heard [b]the report about You, and [c]I was (B)afraid. LORD, (C)revive (D)Your work in the midst of the years, In the midst of the years make it known. In anger remember [d](E)mercy. THIS IS A VINEYARD SONG.

3 God comes from (F)Teman (SOUTH OF DEAD SEA), And the Holy One from Mount (G)Paran. (IN SINAI PENINSULA) SELAH “TO LIFT UP, EXALT” His (H)splendor covers the heavens, And the (I)earth is full of His praise.

4 His (J)radiance is like the sunlight; He has rays flashing from His hand, And the hiding of His (K)might is there.

5 Before Him goes (L)plague, And (M)plague comes forth [e]after Him. LIKE REVELATION

6 He stood and caused the earth to shudder; He looked and (N)caused the nations to jump.

Yes, the everlasting mountains were shattered, The ancient hills [f]collapsed.

His paths are (O)everlasting.

7 I saw the tents of Cushan under (P)distress, The tent curtains of the land of (Q)Midian were trembling.

8 Did the LORD rage against the (R)rivers, Or was Your anger against the rivers, Or was Your rage against the (S)sea, That You (T)rode on Your horses, On Your (U)chariots of salvation?

9 You removed Your (V)bow from its holder, The arrows of Your word were [g]sworn. Selah

PAUSE You (W)divided the earth with rivers.

10 The mountains saw You and quaked; The downpour of waters swept by. The deep (X)raised its voice, It lifted high its hands. “anthromorphism the attribution of human characteristics or behavior to a god, animal, or object.”

11 (Y)Sun and moon stood in their lofty places; They went away at the (Z)light of Your arrows,

At the radiance of Your flashing spear.

12 In indignation You (AA)marched through the earth; In anger You [h](AB)trampled the nations. I PRAY FOR GRACE AND MERCY FOR ALL THE RACES.

13 You went forth for the (AC)salvation of Your people, For the salvation of Your (AD)anointed. You smashed the (AE)head of the house of evil To uncover him from [i]foot to neck. Selah PAUSE

14 You pierced with his (AF)own [j]arrows The head of his [k]leaders. They (AG)stormed in to scatter [l]us; Their arrogance was like those Who (AH)devour the oppressed in secret.

15 You (AI)trampled on the sea with Your horses, On the (AJ)foam of many waters.

16 I heard, and my [m]inner parts (AK)trembled; At the sound, my lips quivered. Decay enters my (AL)bones, And in my place I tremble; Because I [n]must (AM)wait quietly for the day of distress, [o]For the (AN)people to arise who will attack us.

17 Even if the (AO)fig tree does not blossom, And there is no [p]fruit on the vines, If the yield of the (AP)olive fails, And the fields produce no food, Even if the (AQ)flock disappears from the fold, And there are (AR)no cattle in the stalls,

18 Yet I will (AS)triumph in the LORD, I will (AT)rejoice in the (AU)God of my salvation. THIS IS A SONG.

19 The Lord [q]GOD is my (AV)strength, And (AW)He has made my feet like deer’s feet, And has me walk on my (AX)high places. For the choir director, on my stringed instruments.
