Psalm 111 “Look What The Lord Has Done”
1. Look what the Lord has Done
• That’s what Psalm 111 is telling us
• In somewhere around 175 words the singer summarizes the whole history of God’s deliverance of ancient Israel.
• In response to all the Lord has done the Psalmist say as a result Praise the Lord! Or literally: hal-lu-yah. Hallelujah!
2. Will Willimon says this Psalm is a praise song
• In a sermon Willimon says, “The psalm is all about God, he observes. It’s not about us. And this is the essence of worship. It’s about God. We might have enormous stress during the week, we might have family problems, we might have issues with the boss, or we may need to lose weight. But when we come together to worship, it’s all about God, not us.
• I think our texts agrees with Willimon notice verse 1: “I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation” (emphasis added). God likes it when we offer praise publicly.
3. So let’s look at what the Lord has done
• The psalmist say the Lord has done. God is a God of “wonderful deeds” (v. 4), and the result of those wonderful deeds they are clothed in grace and mercy.
• Some examples of those wonderful deeds : God provides food. This is a reference to the Israelites’ experience in the wilderness when manna and quail sustained them for many years. God also provided water in the desert, which is nothing short of amazing!
• God keeps promises. God made covenants with Abraham and kept all of them
• God shows his power to others. Neighboring nations learned and revered the Hebrew God
• God is faithful, just and trustworthy. God delivered Israel time and time again
• God sent salvation to his people. God saved them redeemed them from destruction
4. Let’s look at what the Lord has done but ever and forever will do
• Did you notice that the expression ever or for ever pops up five times in this short praise song?
• Verse 3: His righteousness endures for ever.
• Verse 5: He is ever mindful of his covenant.
• Verse 8: All his precepts are trustworthy. They are established for ever and ever.
• Verse 9: He has commanded his covenant for ever.
• Verse 10: His praise endures for ever.
• One theologian said, “Take it from me! If you trust in God, you can be sure that God will keep covenant with you. God is forever, my friend. He doesn’t go back or take back, retract or redact, deny or dismiss!”
5. Finally The Psalmist. Includes by saying “Holy and awesome is his name” (v. 9).
• So Look what the Lord has done He healed my body, He touched my mind, He saved me, it was just in time. I'm gonna praise His name Each day He's just the same
• A layman was sitting outside the gate Making alms to those who entered in When Peter and John came upon him The layman was expecting from them
• Peter said silver and gold, have I none But such as I have, I give unto thee
• That's when the Spirit touched the layman
• And he leaped up to his feet crying "Look what He's done for me!"
• Look what the Lord has done, He healed my body, He touched my mind, He saved me, it was just in time, The blind say I can see, The deaf say I can hear, the lame say they can walk again, the lost can say I am saved, the dead can say I am alive for all eternity, Look what the
Just look what the Lord has done
He healed my body
He touched my mind
He saved me, it was just in time
I'm gonna praise His name
For each day He's just the same
So come on and praise Him…
