When we look at these verses, it expressions the principles on which of the rest of this chapter is built on. In order to understand the exhortation, we need to understand the principle; and to appreciate the principles, we need to review what the people of that day talked about, we need to know exactly what the Jews said and thought about Moses.
Here we will get a chance to see how Jesus is better than Moses. And to really know the degree of how Jesus is better than Moses, we need to see how important Moses was even before this episode. But I guess a better question to ask even before we visit any of the facts that Jesus is better than Moses, we need to know; why it is even essential, vital, and critical to prove that Jesus is better than Moses.
Because by the way, we know that Moses was revered and respected by the Jews more than any other Jew who ever lived. His resumé speaks volume about who he was, because if we remember God had astoundingly and remarkably sheltered him as a baby, for it was God had personally made provision for Moses burial. And sandwich in the middle of his birth and has burial, are actual miracles after miracles after miracles. I mean after all this was the same man to whom God talked to face to face on the mountain. It was this Moses who seen the glory of God. It was Moses, that felt the presence of God on the Mount of Sinai, and it was such of an impact that after he came down from Sinai, the Bible says that: The skin on his face shone because of his speaking with Him", because he interacted with God, there was a differences upon the face of Moses because he had intermingled with God. In fact, Exodus 34:29 says: And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.
I need to tell someone this morning that any time that you have had an interaction, contact, or an exchange with God it would show up in your life!!!!
Moses was somebody:
It was this Moses, that guided the Israel out of Egypt.
It was this Moses, who was synonymous with the Old Law.
It was Moses, who had the Ten Commandments.
It was Moses, who arranged the Levitical laws.
It was Moses, who gave the plans for the Tabernacle.
It was Moses, who introduced the Ark of the Covenant! In fact, Moses had such an impact that the New Testament even refers to the commands of God, as the "law of Moses"
Moses was somebody.
In fact, some of the Jews alleged to the fact that Moses was greater than some of the Prophet because God spoke to the prophets in visions, but God interacted with and spoke to Moses face to face:
Remember how He spoke to him in a burning bush?
He spoke to him out of heaven.
He spoke to him on Sinai and how he wrote the commandments with a finger of fire. Some say that (Moses) was the most remarkable and noteworthy man that had ever lived. Yes, Moses was somebody.
Yet, in this passage of Hebrews the Holy Spirit calls on the Jewish readers, to look at Jesus. Moses was undeniably, unquestionably, and incontestably great; but Jesus is grandly greater. Jesus is shown to be superior to Moses in office, in work, and in person:
In His office, He is the Apostle and High Priest.
In His work, He is the Builder of the house.
In His Person, He is the Son of God.
So, as the writer deals with the extravagant claims being addressed on the behalf of Moses, and he indications that in nature, relation to God, and the office, still we see that Christ is altogether exceeding and atop who Moses is.
In this chapter three he says in the first verse, it is his desire, to commence an introduction to Jesus, and how He is superior. He recognizes and admits that Moses as a person who is awesome during this time and period, but he also points out the fact that Christ as the head of this era.
The writer parallels them in verse 2, and then he shows us the
dissimilarities in verse three and verse five. He tells us that Moses and Christ were both authentic in their faithfulness, and what I love about this author is that the author does not have to put down, talk about and make Moses look bad in order to lift Christ up. Because you know that there are some people that will always put others down in other to try and make themselves look good?
He speaks of Moses’ faithfulness, but the faithfulness as it is related to Christ is a totally different faithfulness. Let’s look at this again verse one says, “Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; here it is 2 Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house. Then in verse two he talks about the house.
The use of the word house insinuates the argument of a difference. Moses might be in the house, but the house belongs to God, it is God’s house, and this shows us that since it is the Lord’s house then this simply means that Christ was more honorable than Moses, since He was Landlord of the house and Moses was a servant of the house, then this makes Christ greater. And Christ’s scope and array of services was much more superior than Moses, because Christ was the owner and operator, and ownership, is always place on a higher plain than servanthood. No one can come to your house and tell you how to run your house, control your house or how to arrange your furniture. Molly Maid can’t come to you house and tell you
where your dishes ought to go, because Molly Maid are the servants and you are the owner, their job as the hire servant is to follow the instructions that are directed by the owner, and not the other way around. One cannot come to God’s house and instruct him on how the worship should go, how people ought to praise him and who should quench the Spirit, it’s not your house it’s God’s house. It does not matter that you are conservative, bougie, and sidditty. It doesn’t matter because you have a couple cars, and you get you hair done every week, it’s not your house it’s God’s house. The house didn’t belong to Moses, Jesus is greater than Moses.
The point is that Jesus is greater and worthy of more glory than Moses because the builder of the house has more honor than the house itself. Jesus is greater because He is God! Every house must have a builder, but the house is not greater than the builder. Jesus is greater because He is not a servant. He is the Son. Moses was a faithful servant, and his job was to point men to Christ, and not for Christ to point people to Moses. And I believe that why so many of our churches are so messed up because people don’t know their role, people don’t know how to stay in their lane, and anyone that knows anything about driving knows that when you cross over into someone lane it could be a catastrophic accident.
This lesson teaches us that we consider that this is Jesus house, it’s not Moses house it’s the Lord house. However, these days the argument is no longer Christ’s preeminence over Moses,
but rather Christ’s supremacy over man!
The trials to the proprietorship of the church these days are being propelled by ungodly men and women who have engaged in an all-out assault with activities that seize and take the authority from God, who is the head of the church, because there are those who will, turn from the truth, quit the faith, leave the church, turn on God, stop directing the choir, stop playing the organ, stop leading the mission, walk off of the usher board, leave the ministry and try to tear up the church all because they have the Burger King mentality, they want to have it their way. It’s not your house it’s God’s house and if you don’t like what the Word of God is telling us, then we need to tear up our hymn books and bibles and close the doors, because it’s not Moses house, it’s not our house it’s God’s house.
And God has some rules to govern His house, and every member in the house is subject to these rules. Come here Ephesians, Ephesians chapter 1:22 says; 22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
There are some rules that govern God’s house. The church has been commissioned by God to carry the Gospel, to perfect the saints, to edify the body and to work the ministry. Come here Ephesians, Ephesians 4:11,12 says; 11 So Christ himself Gave some apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and some teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.
Contrary to what we believe, I think I need to state it loud and clear, that we’ve got to know:
That God’s House doesn’t belong to the elders!
That God’s House doesn’t belong to the preacher!
God’s House doesn’t belong to the deacons!
God’s House" doesn’t belong to the minter of music!
And God’s House doesn’t belong to Moses!
So, then whose house is it? It belongs to the one who stills the water.
So, then whose house is it? It belongs to the one who heals the sick and raise the dead.
Who house is it? It belongs to the Highest Priest.
Who house is t? It belongs to the one who said "upon this rock I will build my church.
Whose House Is It? It belongs to the one who came from glory and rode the nine-month train of nature, said, let me off in Bethlehem, came through the virgin Mary, raised in the foulness of Nazareth, astounded the Jewish leaders, became a threat to the religious establishment, became hope to the lost sheep of the house of Israel,
Whose House Is It? It belongs to the one.
Who Became sight to blinded eyes, who became strength to broken limbs, light in a dark world, and our strength in time of weakness.
He is the one that died, one Friday evening, on the top of a hill called Golgotha, hanging on an old rugged cross, pierced in his side with a soldier’s weapon, but hanging with the burden of your sins and mine.
Who is he? He is the one that they buried in a borrowed tomb, somebody said, "it was borrowed, because He had every intention of returning it back to its rightful owner!"
He borrowed it for three days, and then He gave it right back, but while He was in it, He snatched the sting out of death, and when He marched out from it, He robbed the grave of it’s victory, and because of His victory, I have victory!
Whose house is it? It belongs to the LORD!
The head of my life
The way maker
The bridge builder
The light in darkness
The one that cried it is finished
And that reminds me of a story is of a family awakened by
their smoke detector in the middle of the night to discover that their house was on fire. The father ran into the upstairs bedroom of his children and carried his youngest child in his arms while pulling his 4-year-old son by the hand.
They were halfway down the stairs when the little boy remembered that he had left his teddy bear in the bedroom, so he broke free from his father’s hand and ran back to the bedroom to retrieve it. In the confusion, the father didn’t notice that his son wasn’t with him until he got outside. By now the little boy was trapped by the flames and smoke in his second story bedroom. Smoke all around him and he cried out from the upstairs window, “Daddy, Daddy! Help me!”
His father yelled from below, “I’m on my way just hold on.
In the darkness and smoke, the little boy yelled back, “But, Daddy! I can’t see you!”
Daddy shouted back, “That’s OK, son. I can see you and I’m on my way!”
In the darkness and confusion of your life, sometimes it’s very difficult to see God, but, God sees us and he knows the house because it’s his house but we need to cry out to the one who owns the house. What’s his name Jesus.
