BY HIS STRIPES-XII—Isaiah 53:10-11(52:13—53:12)

OR: God’s Remedy For Sin

Attention:

Read Isaiah 53:4-12

God has provided the only foolproof REMEDY for sin...Jesus, His only-begotten Son, His Servant!

Background:

~650 years prior to the Cross of Christ Jesus, Isaiah prophesied of the substitutionary atonement which would one day come thru God’s “Servant”(52:13a). Isaiah records details of the coming Servant’s willing sacrifice for the sake of all sinners.

The prophet Isaiah declared a future time when God’s unique Servant would provide the remedy for sin.

Jesus is God’s remedy for sin.

LABOR’s SATISFACTION(53:10-11)

Explanation:(53:10-11)Vicarious/Substitutionary/Labor

53:10—“Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand.”

“Yet”—despite, or regardless of , or though there was NO violence found in the ways of God’s Servant, NOR any deception found in the Servant’s speaking(:9)...

“Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief.”

The political/governmental/military situation surrounding Jesus’ Cross-work was not the deciding factor in bringing about Messiah’s death. The political atmosphere was a willing instrument in the implementation of God’s decision.

•The Eternal God(YHWH) Himself, is the very One who caused His own Servant’s suffering, sickness, weakness.

We are told here that YHWH Himself found ‘delight’(“pleased”) in crushing(“bruise”) His own Arm(53:1), His own Servant(52:13).

•That the Messiah would be destined for “bruising”(break/crush/crumble) carries with it a hint that the Messiah would not be utterly destroyed even though He would physically die.

•This fact is unquestionably revealed in the New Testament account of Jesus’ death on the Cross, followed by His resurrection.

Jesus/Messiah’s promised bruising is further described by the phrase: “He has put Him to grief.”

•To be made weak, sick, rubbed, or worn.

For the Jew particularly, I would think that the sum of the descriptions in 52:13--53:12 would bring a conviction to closely examine the possibilities that God’s Messiah(Christ) has indeed already come & that He is their God-intended Savior(Jesus)!

“Pleased”—Upx khaw-fates’—Qal Perfect—1) To delight in, take pleasure in, desire, be pleased with; 1a) (Qal)--1a1) Of men—1a1a) To take pleasure in, delight in, 1a1b) To delight, desire, be pleased to do, 1a2) Of God, 1a2a) To delight in, have pleasure in, 1a2b) To be pleased to do; 2) To move, bend down—2a) (Qal)--To bend down. Strong—a primitive root; properly--To incline to; by implication (literally but rarely)--To bend; figuratively--To be pleased with, desire.

“LORD”(See 53:1, 6)—hwhy Yeh-ho-vaw’—Noun Proper Deity—Jehovah = “the existing One”—1) The proper name of the one true God—1a) unpronounced except with the vowel pointings of ynda Ad-o-noy’. Strong—from hyh[To exist, be, become, come to pass]; (the)Self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God.

“Bruise/Crush”(See 53:5)—akd daw-kaw’—Piel(intensive/intentional/repeated/extended) Infinitive—1) To crush, be crushed, be contrite, be broken; 1b) (Piel)--To crush. Strong—To crumble; transitively--To bruise(literally or figuratively); a primitive root (compare hkd[to collapse(physically or mentally)]). Used 18X.

“Put...to Grief/Cause...to Suffer”—hlx khaw-law’—Hiphil(causative) Perfect—1) To be or become weak, be or become sick, be or become diseased, be or become grieved, be or become sorry—1a) (Qal)--To be weak, be sick; 1f) (Hiphil)--1f1) To make sore, 1f2) To make sick, 1f3) To show signs of sickness, become sick, 1f4) To grieve. Strong—properly--To be rubbed or worn; hence figuratively--To be weak, sick, afflicted; or causatively--To grieve, make sick; also--To stroke(in flattering), entreat.

“When You make His soul an offering for sin,...”

Either “You”(YHWH) renders His Servant’s soul as an offering; OR “He”(Himself, God’s Servant) offers Himself as the offering.

[NASB]—“If He would render Himself as a guilt offering”

[NIV]—“though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering”

•“The guilt offering may have overtones of completeness, for it involved restitution as well as an offering to God(cf.-Lev. 5)”—EBC

*“An Offering for Sin” also translates as “Guilt Offering.”

•The Guilt Offering differed from the Sin Offering in that it required that restitution or restoration be made to the one offended—whether God or man. “The offerer was to make good on any loss” incurred regarding “the holy things of the Lord & pay an additional fifth of it’s cost to the priest(Lev. 5:16).” “The Sin Offering deals with sins against God that also threaten the community.”—ISBE 1988 by T.R. Schreiner

•cf.-:11c—“...For He shall bear their iniquities.”

*So generally we as individuals of mankind, have sinned against God, & thus we’re guilty of taking that which is God’s ‘life’ generally & perverting it to our own selfish ends. Thus restitution somehow must be made to God! ‘Personal righteousness’ must be restored to produce God’s righteousness!

•Cor. 5:21—“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

“When/If”—Ma ‘eem—Conditional Particle—1) If—1a) Conditional clauses—1a1) Of possible situations, 1a2) Of impossible situations, 1b) Oath contexts—1b1) No, not, 1c) If...if, whether...or, whether...or...or, 1d) When, whenever, 1e) Since, 1f) Interrogative particle, 1g) But rather. A)quch—Breath, i.e. by implication--Spirit, abstractly or concretely--The animal sentient principle only, distinguished from, B) pneuma—The rational & immortal soul, & C)zwh,—Mere vitality, even of plants. “He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,...”

The promise of YHWH is declared, that the “bruised/crushed” & “grief”-stricken Servant would live. He would both “see His seed” & “prolong days.” He will live despite His becoming “an offering for “sin/guilt.”

•Acts 8:26-35—“Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, “Arise & go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is desert. So he arose & went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, & had come to Jerusalem to worship, was returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go near & overtake this chariot.” So Philip ran to him, & heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, & said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he asked Philip to come up & sit with him. The place in the Scripture which he read was this: “He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; And as a lamb before its shearer is silent, So He opened not His mouth. In His humiliation His justice was taken away, And who will declare His generation? For His life is taken from the earth.” So the eunuch answered Philip & said, “I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?” Then Philip opened his mouth, & beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him.”

•Ps. 16:8-10—“I have set the LORD always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, & my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope. For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.”

“And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand.”

Thru the Servant’s sacrifice, YHWH’s desire or “pleasure”(cf- :a) will press ahead/move on/succeed/advance, or “prosper.” God’s desire will not be thwarted!

•Num. 14:21—“but truly, as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD--“

*The end of this verse naturally corresponds with :11a...

53:11—“He shall see the labor of His soul, & be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities.

:11a—“He shall see the labor of His soul, & be satisfied.”

“Labor”—Toil, Suffering, Travail, Anguish.

“Satisfied”—

‘Satisfy’—“To meet the expectations, needs, or desires of.”

‘Satisfaction’—“The fulfillment of one's wishes, expectations, or needs.”

The Servant shall indeed “SEE the labor of his soul & be satisfied.” Thus the Servant will be(& has been) resurrected from the dead & live forevermore!

The concept of “Satisfaction” is implied thru other biblical words such as: ‘Propitiation’ & “Atonement.’

“See”(See 53:2, 10)—har raw-aw’—Qal Imperfect—1) To see, look at, inspect, perceive, consider—1a) (Qal)--1a1) To see, 1a2) To see, perceive, 1a3) To see, have vision, 1a4) To look at, see, regard, look after, see after, learn about, observe, watch, look upon, look out, find out, 1a5) To see, observe, consider, look at, give attention to, discern, distinguish, 1a6) To look at, gaze at. “By His knowledge”...

What Jesus has “Knowledge” of can signify a great deal. It can refer to Discernment, Perception, Skill, Understanding, or Wisdom. The word is both sufficiently vague, yet sufficiently narrowed enough so as to signify /call attention to the entirety of Jesus’ mission for heaven & mankind.

•Prov. 1:7—“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom & instruction.”

•Prov. 9:10—“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

•Prov. 2:10-12—“When wisdom enters your heart, And knowledge is pleasant to your soul, Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you, To deliver you from the way of evil,...”

“Knowledge”—ted dah’-ath—Noun Masc./Fem.—1) Knowledge—1a) Knowledge, perception, skill, 1b) Discernment, understanding, wisdom. “My righteous Servant shall justify many...”

Thus thru Messiah’s(Jesus’) personal experiential & conceptual “knowledge”(being the Son of God) concerning all aspects of His mission, the Messiah would maintain complete ‘servitude’(“Servant”) to God.

•‘All aspects of Jesus’ mission’ would entail Jesus’ directives from His heavenly Father & the temptations brought about by His obedience to His Father(Lk. 4:1-14).

•Lk. 4:1-14—“Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan & was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, & afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry. And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’” Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, & their glory; for this has been delivered to me, & I give it to whomever I wish. “Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.” And Jesus answered & said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, & Him only you shall serve.’” “Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, & said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you,’ “&, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’” And Jesus answered & said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’” Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time. Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, & news of Him went out through all the surrounding region.”

Thus the Lord’s Servant is “righteous”, not with fleshly ‘righteousness’, but God obtained “righteousness.”

•Mat. 5:17-20—“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven & earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, & teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does & teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes & Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.”

•Lk. 18:14—“...for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, & he who humbles himself[to God] will be exalted.””

•Rom. 10:1-11—“Brethren, my heart’s desire & prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, & seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, “The man who does those things shall live by them.” But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down from above) or,” ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth & in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus & believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, & with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”

Thus through Messiah’s God-honoring perfectly “righteous” approach to His Father’s will, it is promised that when Messiah would arrive, He would be fully enabled to “justify many.”

•Prov. 11:9—“The hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbor, But through knowledge the righteous will be delivered.”

•Prov. 24:5—“A wise man is strong, Yes, a man of knowledge increases strength;”

•Prov. 28:2—“...by a man of understanding & knowledge Right will be prolonged.”

Consider that “knowledge” as first-of-all being lodged in the perfection of God the Son!

•Rom. 1:16-17—“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first & also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”[Hab. 2:4]

•Rom. 4:23--5:2—“Now it was not written for his[Abraham’s] sake alone that it[righteousness by faith] was imputed to him, but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was delivered up because of our offenses, & was raised because of our justification. Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, & rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”

*Rom. 5:16-18—“And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned[Adam]. For the judgment which came from one offense[Adam’s] resulted in condemnation, but the free gift[Jesus’] which came from many offenses resulted in justification. For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.) Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s[Jesus’] righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life.”

•Gal. 5:4, 5—“You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.”

*?What does it mean to be “justified” in what you do?...

•To be considered ‘right/correct/acceptable’, but only in the perfect omniscience of Almighty God!

Being “Justified” is a work of Christ Jesus & thus is also a work of God! Only upon being one of those who are “justified” by God, can the Holy Spirit begin His work of regenerating your heart’s loves, desires, & determinations, so that you will live the remainder of your days on earth as one who is justified by God!

“Many”

Being one whom Jesus “justifies” is a PRIVILEGE, meant for everyone of every era, YET ONLY for those who will accept it!

Thus we are told NOT that ALL will be justified, BUT that “MANY” will be justified thru Messiah Jesus!

•Jn. 1:12-13—“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

“For He shall bear their iniquities.”

“For”

The reason/rationale behind the promised “justification” of “many” follows in a short phrase

“He shall bear their iniquities.”

The reason it “pleased the LORD to bruise” His Servant(:10), & that “the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in” the Servant’s “hand”(:10), & the reason that His “Servant shall justify many”(:11), is that the Servant Himself shall “bear” the “iniquities”/sins/failures/guilt, etc., of all those who compose/make-up the “many”!

Recall particularly verses :4-6—!READ!

YHWH’s “righteous Servant” will be the One who will become the sole “bearer” of the load of all mankind’s sin, along with it’s accompanying sins. Sin against God deserves & requires death, as sin cannot be allowed in the perfection of heaven. That is, the condemnation brought about by sin requires an eternal absence from God’s presence—from His goodness, love, security, provision, majesty, direction, wisdom, etc.

Jesus was officially ‘judged’ to be sin, by His Father God, for MY SIN & for YOUR SIN. Jesus was judged for the sin of all mankind of every era including those prior to, & those future to us.

•Js. 1:12-15—““Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.”

•2Cor. 5:21--6:1—“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. We then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain.”

LABOR’s SATISFACTION(53:10-11)

Argumentation:

•Jn. 4:34-38—“Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, & to finish His work. Do you not say, ‘There are still four months & then comes the harvest’? “Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes & look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! And he who reaps receives wages, & gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows & he who reaps may rejoice together. For in this the saying is true: ‘One sows & another reaps.’ “I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, & you have entered into their labors.””

•Acts 8:14-17—“Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter & John to them, who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, & they received the Holy Spirit.”

•The presence of God’s Holy Spirit within the believer is not merely the guarantee of the believer’s going to heaven(1Cor. 1:22)...The Holy Spirit’s presence within the believer ensures that the believer continually has the empowering presence of God in that believer’s life. By the Holy Spirit, the believer is empowered by God to accomplish God’s will! Otherwise, attempts at performing God’s will remain weak attempts at outward compliance!...they are only ‘performances’ in the vein of actors & actresses!

•Eph. 1:13-14—“In Him[Christ Jesus] you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.”

•Eph. 4:29-30—“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”

•Heb. 11:32-40—Labor’s thru faith—“And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon & Barak & Samson & Jephthah, also of David & Samuel & the prophets: who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. Women received their dead raised to life again. And others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. Still others had trial of mockings & scourgings, yes, & of chains & imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins & goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented-- of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts & mountains, in dens & caves of the earth. And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.”

•The labors of the faithful in Christ are to be of such integrity, quality, & consistency, so as to be one & the same with the faithfulness of ALL who have come before us thru the millennia & centuries. The labors of the faithful in Christ are instrumental to the salvation & heart-commitment of those who were before us, presently with us, & who will believe & follow long after you & I are gone.

Retirement plans; Career plans; Family plans, etc/In all these endeavors, where do you find your Labor’s Satisfaction?/His LABOR’s SATISFACTION

The labor force in our country is getting more & more unreliable/It seems that the more they are provided, the less satisfaction they experience in their work/But the real problem with a lack of satisfaction with one’s ‘labor’, with one’s ‘effort’, is an uncertainty & inner questioning about one’s purpose & the usefulness of their labors-work-efforts!/Any incentive toward labor-work-effort, that is less than what is received thru Christ Jesus, leaves a person wanting & dissatisfied—Providing for yourself &/or your family by any means possible; Questionable ‘business’ propositions & practices; etc../‘Worldly satisfaction’ is limited to this-worldly customs & conventions, & is naturally absent of God’s direction!/His LABOR’s SATISFACTION

The adage: ‘If you love what you do, you’ll never have to work again.’...BUT...

?Do you love God’s work? Do you love the Lord’s labors for you & others? ?Do you love God’s choice of labors for yourself, that you have thru Christ Jesus?

?Have you received a SATISFACTION of God’s LABOR that is unique to Christ Jesus?
