WHAT IS YOUR RESPONSE?
Acts 13:42-52
Introduction:
Last week, we studied Paul’s 1st recorded sermon. In our passage today, we are going to notice several different reactions to Paul’s sermon. These reactions still hold true today, when people hear God’s Word.
Acts 13:42-43
When encountered with God’s Word, some people…
1. Want to hear more.
There were many people that after Paul’s sermon, asked him to come back and preach again. They wanted to hear more about what God was doing through Jesus. Many people were saved.
Acts 13:44-45
When encountered with God’s Word, some people…
2. Create conflict.
Paul and Barnabas went back on the next Sabbath, and almost the entire city showed up. There are always people around with selfish motives. Some of the Jews were jealous because they had such a following; so, they started arguing with Paul. They were trying to destroy Paul and his reputation.
Acts 13:46-48
When encountered with God’s Word, some people…
3. Believe and follow Jesus Christ.
Paul is explaining that they had 1st preached to the Jews; but they were not interested, so salvation was made available to the Gentiles. These Gentiles were excited to be saved and honor God’s Word.
Acts 13:49-51
When encountered with God’s Word, some people…
4. Reject it.
The Jewish leaders stirred up important people in the city and their response was to persecute Paul and Barnabas and kick them out of town. Notice that Paul and Barnabas shook the dust off their feet and moved on to another town.
Conclusion:
Acts 13:52
This verse is for those who get discouraged when people do not want to hear the Gospel. Not everyone is going to respond in a way that we like. They did not allow those people who kicked them out of town to discourage them. Instead, they were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.
