An older lady lived on the third floor of a boardinghouse with no elevator. Unfortunately one day she broke her leg.

Knowing her housing situation, as the doctor put a cast on the leg, he sternly sternly warned her not to climb any stairs.

Several months later, she’s back in the doctor’s office & her cast is removed.

“Can I climb stairs now?” asked the little old lady.

“Yes you can,” he replied. “Your leg is as strong as ever!”

“Thank goodness!” she said. “I’m so tired of shinnying up & down that drainpipe!”

Despite her setbacks the woman remained undaunted...Unconquerable!

Explanation:(:16-18)

:16—“Therefore, we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.”

As a result of all the assurances that God has blessed us with, God’s people are indeed unconquerable & undefeatable! Thus they “do not lose heart”(cf.-:1).

“Though” the “outward man” of God’s people is is in a continual state of “perishing”, the truth is that “the inward man” is in a continual state of “renewal.” For the child of God that is devoted wholeheartedly to Him, no “day” passes by without some aspect, if not all, of “the inward man’s” “renewal.”

Isa. 40:28-31—“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint & be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run & not be weary, They shall walk & not faint.””

Rom. 12:1-2—“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good & acceptable & perfect will of God.”

“For our light affliction”

In the grand scheme of God’s gracious provision, all of the numerous trials(cf.-Js. 1:2-4) which “afflict” the blood-bought Christian, are considered by them to be “light.” Any “affliction”/pressure(yliqiv) placed upon the believer because of their trust in Jesus, is in actuality a comparatively “light” thing to bear up under.

This perspective of “lightness” or ‘ease’ is particularly apparent in two opposing scenarios:

1) The believer’s “affliction”/pressure is “light” when compared to the ultimate reality of those who choose to refuse Jesus. The burden placed upon the child of God is indeed “light” as Christ has said, & is no real ‘burden’ at all(Mat. 11:28-30).

Mat. 11:28-30—Jesus said,—““Come to Me, all you who labor & are heavy laden, & I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you & learn from Me, for I am gentle & lowly in heart, & you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy & My burden is light[elafrov].””

2)The believer’s “affliction”/pressure is “light” when compared to the ultimate reality of their future in heaven, with the God who loves them so deeply(Jer. 31:3). “But for a moment”

Deut. 7:7-8—“The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any other people, for you were the least of all peoples; but because the LORD loves you, & because He would keep the oath which He swore to your fathers, the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand, & redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.”

Deut. 10:14-15—“Indeed heaven & the highest heavens belong to the LORD your God, also the earth with all that is in it. The LORD delighted only in your fathers, to love them; & He chose their descendants after them, you above all peoples, as it is this day.”.....Today, by faith in Messiah/Christ!

Mal. 1:2-4—“I have loved you,” says the LORD. “Yet you say, ‘In what way have You loved us?’ Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” Says the LORD. “Yet Jacob I have loved; But Esau I have hated, And laid waste his mountains & his heritage For the jackals of the wilderness.” Even though Edom has said, “We have been impoverished, But we will return & build the desolate places,” Thus says the LORD of hosts: “They may build, but I will throw down; They shall be called the Territory of Wickedness, And the people against whom the LORD will have indignation forever.”

Rom. 9:13-16—“As it is written, “Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.” What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? Certainly not! For He says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, & I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion.” So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy.”

“Working for us a far more exceeding & eternal weight of glory.”

For the believer, “affliction” faced thru commitment to Jesus is more like a soft breeze, which attempts to push us over, aside or down! As Paul has said previously in :8-9—“We are hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed--”

Js. 1:2-4—“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect & complete, lacking nothing.”

When compared to the unimaginable extent of eternity, any “affliction” the saint suffers in the body(:10-12) is actually only instantaneous(“light”). Thus any real tribulation/pressure(“affliction”) becomes freeingly tolerable.

And thru such liberty, the believer’s “light affliction” power-plays against any “weight” that is NOT “eternal.” The “glory” that will be revealed in us in eternity puts human effort in this present earthly life to shame(Rom. 8:18).

Rom. 8:16-18—“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, & if children, then heirs--heirs of God & joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”

Acts 20:18-24—“And when they had come to him, he said to them: “You know, from the first day that I came to Asia, in what manner I always lived among you, serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears & trials which happened to me by the plotting of the Jews; how I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, & taught you publicly & from house to house, testifying to Jews, & also to Greeks, repentance toward God & faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. And see, now I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains & tribulations await me. But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, & the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.”

That eternal weight(:17) or reality of being a participant in the glory God offers(:17), is experienced only—when we fix our mind’s eye(“look at”) upon those “things which are unseen.”

Those “unseen” “things” are “eternal.”...And because of that fact, they carry a continually eternal significance that overshadows & overwhelms any & everything of creation, that attempts to confront those who trust in God thru Christ.

That is why increasing knowledge is vital to Christian growth.

Col. 1:9-12—“For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, & to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom & spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work & increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience & longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.”

Argumentation:

Rom. 5:1-5—“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, & rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; & perseverance, character; & character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”

Rom. 5:17-19—“For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace & of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.) Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.”

2Pet. 3:13-14—“Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens & a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot & blameless;”

Acts 9:1-6; 20-22—“Then Saul, still breathing threats & murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest & asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. As he journeyed he came near Damascus, & suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, & heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.” So he, trembling & astonished, said, “Lord, what do You want me to do?” Then the Lord said to him, “Arise & go into the city, & you will be told what you must do.”.....“Immediately he preached the Christ in the synagogues, that He is the Son of God. Then all who heard were amazed, & said, “Is this not he who destroyed those who called on this name in Jerusalem, & has come here for that purpose, so that he might bring them bound to the chief priests?” But Saul increased all the more in strength, & confounded the Jews who dwelt in Damascus, proving that this Jesus is the Christ.”

2Kgs. 6:12-17—“And one of his servants said, “None, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.” So he said, “Go & see where he is, that I may send & get him.” And it was told him, saying, “Surely he is in Dothan.” Therefore he sent horses & chariots & a great army there, & they came by night & surrounded the city. And when the servant of the man of God arose early & went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses & chariots. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, & said, “LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, & he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses & chariots of fire all around Elisha.”
