Summary: Sickness enters without knocking, changes plans, mocks certainty, diminishes hope, intrudes like a burglar. Such interruption occurred to a woman in Mark 5 and a man in Luke 5. They both experienced much losses and grew frustrated. That is until they came across Jesus.

DO NOT LIMIT THE HOLY ONE OF ISRAEL (PART 7): THE POWER OF THE LORD WAS PRESENT THAT DAY TO HEAL THEM

1. Mark 5: 24 So Jesus went with him (Jarius). A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. 30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?” 31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ” 32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”

2. James 5: 13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. 14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. 16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

3. Luke 5:17 Now it happened on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present that day to heal them.

4. Psalm 78: 41 Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.

INTRO: DO NOT LIMIT GOD (PT. 7B) POWER OF GOD WAS PRESENT TO HEAL THAT DAY

TOPICS: In What Ways We Limit God? Why We Limit God? How To Take Off The Limits? Results Of A Life Without Limit. REVIEW: In Psalm 78, How Hebrews Limited Their God In The Wilderness - saw the miracles yet doubted. In Mark 6, they refused to accept who Christ was because of Familiarity. In 1 Kings 20, they limited God due to Presumption - God of the mountains only & not of the valleys & plains. In 1 Samuel 28, we limit God due to Fear - King Saul & Elijah (1 Kings 19). In 2 Kings 8, we limit God in Giving – Shunemite Woman. Numbers 13: Limit God in our Imagination & Vision - 12 Spies in Numbers 13. I Am Not A Grasshopper. Today: The Power Of The Lord Was Present That Day To Heal (A&B) (Luke 5 & Mark 5). Chief Question We Must Ask Is This? Can God Heal? The Answer Is “Yes”.

MEANING OF “LIMIT” (TEACH)

Limit: “A point or level beyond which something does not or may not extend or pass. This is a restriction on the size or amount of something permissible or possible. Some words synonymous with limit are restrict, put in check, restrain, freeze, regulate, control, etc. So can God heal today?

BIBLE VERSES ON HEALING (TEACH)

1. Jeremiah 30:17 I will give you back your health and heal your wounds,” says the Lord.

2. Psalm 41:3 The Lord nurses them when they are sick and restores them to health.

3. Mark 1:34 So Jesus healed many people who were sick with various diseases, and he cast out many demons. But because the demons knew who he was, he did not allow them to speak.

4. Psalm 107:20 He sendeth his word, and healeth them, and delivereth them from their destructions.

LET’S TALK ABOUT DISEASES AND HEALING (IN TWO PARTS)

Disease Is A Disorder In A Human, animal, or plant, especially one that produces specific signs or symptoms or that affects a specific location and is not simply a direct result of physical injury. There are over 100,000 identified diseases in the world today, not talking about those that have not been identified. The 6 deadliest diseases in history are Small pox, The Black Plague (infected rats, 1300’s killed 75-200m), Tuberculosis, Malaria, Ebola, Cholera. Top leading causes of death in USA: Heart Disease, Cancer, Alzheimer’s, Diabetes, Stroke, Pneumonia, Respiratory Diseases, etc.

HOW DID SICKNESS MAKE ITS ENTRANCE?

1. When God Created Us, Everything Including Man, Was Very Good.

2. Man Was Made In The Nature Of God. In God’s Nature, There Is No Sickness.

3. The Fall Of Man In Genesis 3 First Led To Spiritual Death (Genesis 3:10).

4. And Later Physical Death (Genesis 3:19).

SICKNESS IS THE GREAT INTERRUPTER OF LIFE.

Sickness Enters Without Knocking, changes plans, mocks certainty, diminishes hope, intrudes like a burglar. Example: Such interruption occurred to a woman in Mark 5 & a man in Luke 5. The crowd is attracted to Jesus, the miracle worker - the healer who is on His way to Jairus’ dying daughter. He is interrupted by a very sick woman. Her face reveals agony. Her body displayed pain. Tradition gives her various names, but she has none. She is typical of countless cases of endless pain & suffering. For 12 years she had suffered. She hopes Jesus can heal because her sickness took everything valuable out of her. She had experienced too much losses.

WHAT ARE THE LOSSES THAT SICKNESS BRINGS

1. Loss Of Control. Suddenly the body, rather than obeying, has its own agenda and behaves any way it pleases. It’s like driving a car on an icy highway - you are out of control; hit the brakes, turn the steering wheel - nothing helps. All you can do is hang on and wait for the crash. It is a helpless feeling. The woman’s body was out of control - subjected to bleeding for 12 years.

2. Loss Of Identity. Sick people become defined by their illness. Interesting the lady in the story is not called by name. Simply, “A woman was there who had been subject to bleeding.” The same is true today. We speak of certain people and say “She has cancer,” “He has AIDS,” or “She suffers from depression.” One is no longer the person they were; they are the person who has an illness, who is disfigured, who endures chronic pain, who is dying. You lose your identity.

3. Loss Of Certainty. With a chronic illness everything becomes contingent upon the condition. Vacations are contingent upon the body. One will go to work if the sickness allows. Even getting up in the morning is stipulated by the sickness. What was once predictable is now conditional.

4. Loss Of Place In Society. Sickness often puts a strain on relationships, jobs, hobbies, families. The sick person feels a better fit in the hospital with other sick people, but not in the healthy world. They don’t fit in. E.g. John 5: Man At Pool Of Bethesda – gathering with his kind.

5. Loss Of Resources. The woman in the story “had spent all she had”. She was financially bankrupt, emotionally spent, and physically weak. She reminds us that vast fortunes of time, energy, and money can be squandered in an effort to bring healing.

6. Loss Of Hope. Perhaps the most chilling aspect of this lady’s life was that she had tried everything “yet instead of getting better she grew worse”. She was beyond human help and hope. As a last resort, she comes to Jesus hoping against hope that He could heal her. She was desperate enough to try anything.

WHAT CAUSES SICKNESS?

1. Violations Of God’s Natural Laws. Many are sick because they disregard basic health principles - sanitation, hygiene, diet, exercise, rest. E.g. Ebola, diabetes, HIV Aids, etc. A well-balanced diet is essential to good health. God was Israel’s healer, and also their dietitian. God established laws of hygiene and diet that are still helpful in maintaining health today.

2. Violations Of God’s Moral & Spiritual Laws. God sometimes allows physical infirmity to punish sin and chasten His children. 1 Corinthians 11:29-32: “For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.” Some were sick & others died because of sinful attitudes at Communion. Sickness was a strong sign to change sinful behavior.

3. Brought By Satan And Allowed By God. Satan sometimes brings sickness (though permitted by God). E.g. Job, Paul. 2 Cor. 12: Paul repeatedly asked God to deliver him from his “thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan.” Job 1-2: Gives a glimpse of Heaven with Satan appearing before God seeking permission to destroy Job.

4. For God’s Glory & Our Good. Sickness is sometimes allowed for our growth and for God’s glory. Psalms 119:71 “It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees”. Joni Eareckson Tada: 1967, broke her neck at 17. From a wheelchair, God uses her infirmity to minister His love to many. Satan broke her neck, hoping to ruin her life. God allowed the broken neck in answer to her prayer for a closer walk. 50 books plus, numerous awards, councils, etc.

WHAT CURES SICKNESS?

1. Healing With Medicine. Some say use of doctors & medicines indicates “lack of faith.” This disregards the testimony of the Bible. Medicine is a gift from God. Isaiah 38:21: When King Hezekiah was ill, Isaiah offered a medical prescription and said, “apply it to the boil, and he will recover”. 1 Timothy 5:23: Paul prescribed wine for Timothy’s stomach ailment. God is not limited in His miraculous power. He can use human agencies. Luke WAS a doctor.

2. Healing Through Rest & Change. We may often experience healing through a change of pace and rest. Even Jesus needed withdrawal for refreshing with the Father.

3. Healing Though Exercise: We strengthen our immune systems. (Will talk on this).

4. Healing Through Divine Intervention. Christians and non-Christians populate hospital wards, asylums. The Bible teaches instances of God enabling his prophets and disciples to heal men, women, children. James 5 counsels that healing is still to be expected today.

5. Healing Is Not Exhibited On Everyone: Some say that those we pray for and are not healed are faithless or sinful. The Bible does not teach that. God chooses to heal and not to heal. But we must pray and ask in faith and let God make that determination.

SOME WAYS PHYSICAL TRAINING HELPS WITH SPIRITUAL TRAINING

I Tim. 4:8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. Jos. 14, Caleb was 85 years old and “just as strong” as when he was called to mission. Deut. 34:7 Moses 120 – eye sight, strength intact.

1. My Mental / Brain Capacity Increases. Good health assists with extra brain power. Exercise delivers a fresh supply of blood and oxygen to the brain. This helps clear the mind of stress, anxiety, depression, sadness, anger.

2. I Have More Energy. Exercise energizes me to be more productive – muscles are toned, etc.

3. I Am More Disciplined. When disciplined in one area of life, it transfers to other areas of life.

4. Forces Me To Rest. Exercise makes you more prone to rest.

5. I Have More Physical Agility: It aids our body in removing toxins & waste that clog organs and make us slow, sick, tired. If we sit without vigorous physical activity, our muscles become weak. Illness invades the inactive body like weeds in an untended yard.

6. Resistance To Temptation: Lack of exercise or useful physical activity frees up time for other less desirable pursuits. You’ve heard it said, idle hands are the devil’s workshop.

WHY DOES JESUS HEAL?

1. Jesus Heals Because He Is Full Of Compassion. Mark 1:40-41: A leper came to Jesus, “beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean”. The Lord’s response? “And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean”. Compassion led to the miracle.

2. Jesus Heals Because Healing Belongs To His Children. Mark 7:27-28: The Syrophenician woman reveals that: “Should I take the children’s bread cast it unto the dogs.” If you are a child of the King, healing should come to you first, even before unbelievers receive their miracle.

3. Jesus Heals To Bring Glory To His Father. Matthew 15:30-31: In Galilee, “great multitudes came to Jesus… and he healed them… (and) the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, maimed to be whole, lame to walk, and blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.” Healing is a wonderful, awe-inspiring faith-builder that should lead to glorifying God.

4. Jesus Heals To Fulfill God’s Promises. When the Master heals, it is a fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy. On the cross, Christ took our sickness and infirmities. Every Time Jesus Heals, The Devil’s Defeat At The Cross Is Exposed Once Again. 1 John 3:8 “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil”.

5. Jesus Heals To Show Us The Power In His Blood / Name. Isaiah 54:4-5 fulfilled 2000years ago: “He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed”. The blood of Jesus was shed to forgive sin & provide healing.

UNDERSTANDING THE POWER IN THE NAME OF JESUS

1. His Name Gives Us Our Identity. Acts 11:26 “… And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” As a Christian, you are identified with God because you believe in the name of Jesus.

2. Jesus’ Name Is Above Every Other Name. Philip 2:9-11 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

3. Only Through His Name Can You Get Anything From God. John 16:23-24 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. God has designed it that after the death & resurrection of Jesus, no man can relate with Him for any reason whatsoever except through Jesus.

4. Everything Jesus Is And Carries Is In His Name: Mark 16:17-18 And these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. Whatever Jesus can do, the power in the name will do it when you use it. We exercise our God-given authority only in the name of Jesus.

5. His Name Is At Work 24/7: Revelations 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death –. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Look for Him, or call Him anytime, anywhere and the power in the name will work. His Name is never on break.

6. The Enemy Knows And Understands The Power Of Names, Most Especially The Name Jesus. Matthew 8:29 And behold, they shrieked and screamed, What have You to do with us, Jesus, Son of God? Have You come to torment us before the appointed time? The devils trembled at the presence of Jesus. Command healing or deliverance over your life or loved one INJ.

7. The Name Of Jesus Is A Strong Refuge. Proverbs 18:10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe. The power in the name provides protection, covering for them that believe in it.

8. His Name Commands Deliverance. Acts 9:34 And Peter said unto him, Æneas, Jesus Christ maketh thee whole: arise, and make thy bed. And he arose immediately. When you call His name for help, the answer is dispatched immediately.

9. The Power In The Name Of Jesus Is Invoked Through Faith. Acts 3:16 And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. Don’t call His name in vain; it is not acceptable unto God.

10. You Are Qualified To Use His Name Only If You Are Born Again. Acts 19:13-17 The Sons of Sceva and using the Lord’s name carelessly. It is very dangerous to use the name of Jesus if you have not identified with Him.

COMMON BLOCKAGES TO HEALING APART FROM WILL OF GOD

1. Lack Of Faith: This is one of the most common obstacles that can prevent healing. Jesus made it clear in many healings that faith is important to receiving your healing. Matthew 9:29: "Then touched he their eyes, saying, according to your faith be it unto you." Matthew 9:22: "Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole." Mark 9:23 "...If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth."

2. Unforgiveness In The Heart: If you are holding grudges or bitterness against someone, you need to release that hurt and bitterness from your heart. Unforgiveness can come between you and God and prevent your own sins from being forgiven, and give the enemy a legal ground to bring trouble upon you (Matthew 18:23-35), such as spirits of infirmity, sickness, diseases, etc.

3. Unconfessed Sin: 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us of all unrighteousness. Different times Jesus would say to the person "your sins are forgiven". In other words, Him forgiving their sins, opened them up to be healed as well.

4. Wrong Battle Plan: Sometimes a person is being prayed over for healing, but what the person actually needs is deliverance. A spirit of infirmity has attached itself to them, and is causing some health problem. In Matthew, half of Jesus’ healings were actually deliverances! Luke 13: Woman Thou Art Loosed.

5. Not Knowing It's God's Will To Heal Us: Our Christian faith is based upon God's Word. Therefore if we don't know it's God's will to heal us, we will doubt when we ask for a healing, or beg for a healing, instead of confidently receiving it in the name of Jesus.

WHY DOES GOD DELAY IN HEALING US OF ILLNESS?

1. When God Delays In Prayers For Healing, It May Mean That He Has Another Purpose That He Is Seeking To Accomplish. E.g. Mary & Martha sent for Jesus when their brother Lazarus was sick. John 11:6 teaches that, “When Jesus heard that Lazarus was sick, He stayed two more days in the place where He was”. Why? He did love Lazarus. Jesus declared His reasoning that the sickness was for the glory of God. The Lord didn’t want to just heal Lazarus. He wanted to raise him from the dead in front of all who were present.

2. God May Not Answer Prayers To Our Healing Because He Desires To Save Others Through Our Circumstances. After Lazarus was raised to life what happened? John 11:45 “Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen the things Jesus did, believed in Him”. As people watch your circumstances and observe how God works in your life they too will come to believe that there is a God who supports and sustains.

3. God May Also Refuse Us Healing Because He Desires To Bring Us To A Place Of Surrender To His Sovereign Rights Over Our Lives. King Nebuchadnezzar had to learn this lesson in his own life because of his arrogance. Daniel 4:32 God told the king that he would lose his ability to govern his kingdom, “until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses”. Therefore, when you experience delays to any prayer, be assured that God is fulfilling another eternal purpose that you may not understand.

4. Sometimes God Refuses To Answer Our Prayer For Healing Because We Do Not Have The Right Heart Attitude. How do you know if your heart is in the wrong place? a. James 1:5-7: Doubting God will keep us from receiving from Him: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord”. b. James 4:3 We ask with wrong motives in our hearts which keep us from receiving from God: “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures”. c. Luke 18:9-14 Sometimes people come to God in prayer with prideful and self-righteous hearts. He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: ‘Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector…

HOW SHOULD WE PRAY FOR HEALING?

James 5: 13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. 14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. 16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

1. The Sick Should Call. James 5:14 “Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord”. Initial step is to be taken by the sick person. This person or a rep should summon church leaders. When seriously ill, it is not easy to pray effectively for ourselves; then it is important to remember that we belong to a body and are not alone. We call for their prayers.

2. Call For The Elders: The elders are called because they should be persons of faith who believe that God can heal. The Lord may not heal in every case, but these elders are convinced that He is a healing God and that He can make sick persons whole.

3. Elders Should Pray. As the leaders of the local church the elders are called because they should be spiritually mature and experienced in intercessory prayer. They are “to pray over him.”

4. Elders Should Anoint: “Pray” is the main verb, while “anoint” is a participle. The anointing with oil was completely subsidiary to the praying.

5. Anoint In The Name Of The Lord: Call on divine authority for the results. Oil was a common medicine in biblical times. James seems to prescribe prayer along with medicine, suggesting that we should avail ourselves of both spiritual & natural resources. Some teach that healing power was confined to the Apostolic Age. God has imposed no limits upon Himself.

6. The Lord Will Heal. It is God’s power that heals. The prayer, anointing, and the calling on Jesus’ name is not a magical rite. It is an opening for God’s power to intervene.

7. There Is Forgiveness. “And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.” This particular phrase is used nowhere else in the New Testament. In one sense every sincere prayer must be offered in faith or it can hardly be called prayer at all. When the elders pray, they are to come to God with an attitude of complete trust. He can also gift someone in the body to carry out the healing.

SUGGESTIONS FOR THE SEEKER

1. Give God A Chance. Take your problem, whatever it may be, to Him in prayer. Tell Him about it - just as if He did not know a thing. Hold nothing back. Dare to be honest.

2. Believe That God Will Hear You. He heard the woman who only touched the hem of His garment. Believe with all your faith that He cares what happens to you.

3. Be Willing To Wait Patiently For The Lord. He does not answer every prayer on Sunday afternoon. You may have to wait until Friday. But wait. God is never in a hurry.

4. Reach Out And Touch Him. It is one thing to throng the Lord and quite another to trust Him. Many people bump into Jesus, but few reach out and touch Him. In faith, reach out.

5. Be Ready To Discern What The Will Of The Lord Is. He can heal all illnesses but may not heal all illnesses. Seek His will for your situation. E.g. Acts 12: James killed, Peter freed.

6. When He Speaks To You, Do What He Tells You. He may not tell you audibly. You may not hear His voice or see writing in the sky, but generally through your own conscience or through trusted counsel of friends He might indicate a course of action.
