Summary: A sermon examining certain aspects of God that we need to be reminded of from time to time.

LORD, REMIND ME

II Chronicles 5:21

(Antioch Baptist Church: Sunday, August 17th, 2025)

Nothing good have I done,

to deserve God’s own Son,

I’m not worthy of the scars in His hand.

Yet He chose the road to Calvary to die in my stead

Why he loved me, I can’t understand

Roll back the curtain of memory now and then,

show me where you brought me from and where I could have been.

Remember I’m human, and humans forget.

So remind me, remind me dear Lord.

This is a song that many of us have known for decades. But it is more than a song; it is a prayer that Dottie Rambo prayed shortly after signing her first recording contract. She said “Lord, I appreciate you for doing this for me. I know you must have done a million things like this that I did not know or remember, and have not thanked you for. I am human and I forget. But when You do good things, just roll back the curtain and remind me of them and I’ll thank you for them.”

There are times when we fail to recognize what God is doing in our lives. Furthermore, there are times when we fail to remember all that He has done for us in the past. It would be beneficial for us to humbly bow and ask the Lord to remind us of what He has done. I would like to look at 2 Corinthians 5:21 and preach a message simply titled “Lord, Remind Me”.

In this passage Paul points to the amazing work that God has done in the life of a believer. He says, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” Prior to this the Apostle spoke of the great change that is brought about in those who are “in Christ”. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” (v17).

There was no one more qualified to describe the transformation that Jesus can bring than the Apostle Paul. Jesus performed a great work in His life and changed him eternally. What Jesus did for Paul, He has done for all who belong to Him. Titus 2:14 says that Jesus “gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.”

There are likely three different types of people who are assembled here today. There are some who need to be transformed by Jesus Christ, there are others who have been transformed by Jesus, and there are some who need to be reminded that they have been transformed by the Savior. As we examine the great truths that are recorded in this verse, we will see the importance of pausing from time to time any saying:

LORD, REMIND ME OF YOUR LOVE

If we are honest, there are times when we are all hard to love. I am thankful for parents, children, and a spouse who possess unconditional love. It is amazing that your family knows you better than anyone else and they love you anyway.

Even greater is the reality that God knows more about you than anyone else. The Lord knows your actions, He knows your thoughts, He knows what you have done, He knows what you are going to do, and He loves you anyway!

Throughout His Epistles, Paul provides several illustrations of the transformation that Jesus brings into our lives. In Colossians 3:8-10 he describes the contrast between the “old man” and the “new man”. He says, “now you must put (all these) away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.”

One of the greatest pictures of what we were before Christ is recorded in Titus 3:3. Paul says, “For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.”

- Before we experienced the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit we were:

“foolish” – this means to be ignorant concerning the things of God.

“disobedient” – speaks of one who is rebellious toward God.

“deceived” – means to be continually led deeper and deeper into sin by Satan.

“slaves to various lusts and passions” – one who is a slave to the desires of the flesh.

“passing our days in malice” – this refers to a lifestyle of evil.

“envy” – this speaks of always grasping for more and desiring what others have.

“hateful” – this is someone who is mean-spirited and hard to get along with.

“hating one another” – this refers to walking without love for your fellow man.

That passage certainly describes someone who is hard to love. However, in spite of those many negative attributes, God chose to love us! Romans 5:8 says that “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” God knows us, yet He loved us enough to send His only begotten Son to make a way so that one day we could be with Him. This is the supreme demonstration of God's love. For this reason it is imperative for us to stop and say, “Lord, remind me of your love”.

- It would also be exceedingly beneficial for us to pray: :

LORD REMIND ME OF YOUR SALVATION

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” (v17).

The phrase “In Christ” speaks of our salvation. Salvation means to be “rescued from harm, destruction or danger”. That is what God did for us through the sacrifice of His Son. There was a great penalty due as a result of our sins. God sent Jesus to pay our sin debt and deliver us from the deserved consequences of those sins. We were destined for Hell and Jesus came and made a way of escape. We were lost and “He saved us”. We were defiled and “He washed us”. We were dead but “in Christ we are made alive”. We were empty and He filled us with His Spirit.

Everything that we received in salvation came because God sacrificed His Son. (“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”) If you are saved it is because of Jesus' sacrifice. If you have not been saved, please understand that Jesus went to the cross for you. He made a way for you to have a new life, and that new life starts with a new birth that brings salvation.

Not one person will be in Heaven because they deserved God’s salvation. Redemption and eternal life is only possible because of God’s mercy. I am glad to report that God’s mercy still abounds today! Those who have experienced His mercy, should pause and say:

LORD, REMIND ME OF YOUR MERCY

Because of God’s mercy, we do not receive the punishment that we deserve. Every one of us deserves to spend eternity in hell; nothing can change that fact. But all who are “in Christ” have been delivered from our due punishment and from the condemnation that we deserve. Intertwined with God's mercy is His grace, and it is important for us to stop and say:

LORD, REMIND ME OF YOUR GRACE

Whereas mercy is not receiving what we do deserve, grace is receiving something that we could never deserve. Grace is the unmerited favor of God. Our works will never be enough to get us to Heaven, but His grace is more than sufficient.

It is because of His grace that we are justified. Through justification God pardons all the sins of those who belong to Christ. The Lord doesn’t just pardon our sins; He initiates a personal relationship with us. He walks with us intimately, He cares for us immensely, and He blesses us immeasurably

If God had only delivered us from our sin debt and freed us from Hell, that would have much been more than we could ever deserve. But He went much, much farther than that: He has adopted us into His family, He is our Heavenly Father, and we are joint heirs with Jesus. Furthermore, Jesus has provided us with an eternal home and a place in His Kingdom. Through Christ we have a new life, a new future, a new family, & a new home, and we have received all of this because of God’s grace

Everything we have seen so far (God's love, salvation, grace, & mercy) is made possible because of Jesus’ sacrifice. As Christians we must never forget that Jesus paid it all, for this reason we should regularly pause and say:

LORD, REMIND ME OF YOUR SACRIFICE

God the Father sent His only Son to be your redeemer. Jesus left Heaven, came to earth, lived a perfect life, and gave Himself as the only perfect and acceptable sacrifice for our sins. Our Savior was born of a virgin, and He lived a sinless life. Jesus taught with power and authority. He healed the sick, cleansed lepers, cast out demons, walked on water, and calmed storms with the sound of His voice. He gave the blind their sight, made the deaf to hear, the mute to talk, and the lame to walk. On several occasions He even raised the dead.

In due time He laid down His life, paid the price for our sins, rose from the grave, ascended to Heaven, and sat down at the right hand of the Father. He has provided atonement for our sins, He is making intercession on our behalf, He has forgiven our sins, delivered our souls from Hell, transformed our lives, and provided us with eternal life. He has defeated sin, Satan, death, Hell and the Grave.

On top of all of this, He left His followers with a promise that He would come again to receive us. One day He will split the eastern sky, with a shout, with the voice of an Archangel, and the sound of a trumpet, and He will call His children home! When He does, we will rise up out of this world of sorrow, we will meet Him in the air, and “so shall we ever be with the Lord”!

There are some important truths that we may forget from time to time, for this reason we should pray “Lord, remind me”. If you have never trusted Christ as your Savior, it is important for you to know that Jesus has made a way for you to experience God’s love, mercy, grace, and salvation. In Mark 1:15 Jesus sounded a warning concerning those who would reject this opportunity and that warning still rings true concerning the salvation that God has provided. He said: "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent, and believe the gospel."

The Gospel is the “good news” concerning what Jesus has done for lost man. (“Christ died for our sins, He was buried, He rose again the third day according to the scriptures…”) If you have never surrendered to Jesus, you have the opportunity right now. This opportunity is made possible because of God's love, salvation, mercy, grace and His Sacrifice.

If you know that you have been saved, do you praise God for these gifts on a regular basis? Maybe you would be honest enough to admit that sometimes you forget all that God has done for you. If this is true, let me encourage you to humbly bow before the Lord and say “Lord, Remind Me”: Remind Me Of Your Love, Remind Me Of Your Salvation, Remind Me Of Your Mercy. Remind Me Of Your Grace and Remind Me Of Your Sacrifice.

Roll back the curtain of memory now and then,

show me where you brought me from and where I could have been.

Remember I’m human, and humans forget.

So remind me, remind me dear Lord.

Lord, remind me!
