BY HIS STRIPES-XI—Isaiah 52:13—53:12
OR: God’s Remedy For Sin
Attention:
God has provided the only foolproof remedy for sin...Jesus, His only-begotten Son, His Servant!
Background:
Some 650 years prior to the Cross of Christ Jesus, Isaiah prophesied of the substitutionary atonement which would one day come thru God’s “Servant”(52:13a). Isaiah records details of the coming Servant’s willing sacrifice for the sake of all sinners.
The prophet Isaiah declared a future time when God’s unique Servant would provide the remedy for sin.
Jesus is God’s remedy for sin.
Why/How/When is Jesus God’s remedy for sin?
Our reception of Jesus as God’s remedy for personal sin.
‘RECEIVE’—More than mental acceptance, which only makes possibilities possible/plausible. ‘Receiving’ on the other hand, has to do with acceptance by the heart, so that what is received, is taken to the point of actual reliance upon that which is received or in a Christian context, Who is received.
Jn. 1:1213—The apostle John said of Jesus:—“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

RIGHTEOUSNESS/JUSTIFICATION(53:9)
Explanation:(53:9)
53:9—“And they made His grave with the wicked-- But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth.”
“And they made His grave with the wicked--...”
The coming Servant(Jesus) would be cut off from God’s people thru His death on a criminal’s Cross(Isa. 49:8; Jn. 19:28-30, 31-37).
Thus His “grave” would be determined(“made”) to be “with the wicked”, by all who would be His crucifiers—“They”...
•“They”—All the officials & populace who cried out for & saw to the fulfillment of Jesus crucifixion.
Mat. 27:15-26—“Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the multitude one prisoner whom they wished. And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” For he knew that they had handed Him over because of envy. While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.” But the chief priests & elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas & destroy Jesus. The governor answered & said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They said, “Barabbas!” Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said to him, “Let Him be crucified!” Then the governor said, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!” When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water & washed his hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it.” And all the people answered & said, “His blood be on us & on our children.” Then he released Barabbas to them; & when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.”
Jn. 19:28--37—“After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; & they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, & put it to His mouth. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, & that they might be taken away. Then the soldiers came & broke the legs of the first & of the other who was crucified with Him. But when they came to Jesus & saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, & immediately blood & water came out. And he who has seen has testified, & his testimony is true; & he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe. For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, “Not one of His bones shall be broken.” And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on Him whom they pierced.””
“Made”—Ntn naw-than’—Qal Imperfect—1) To give, put, set—1a) (Qal)—1a1) To give, bestow, grant, permit, ascribe, employ, devote, consecrate, dedicate, pay wages, sell, exchange, lend, commit, entrust, give over, deliver up, yield produce, occasion, produce, requite to, report, mention, utter, stretch out, extend, 1a2) To put, set, put on, put upon, set, appoint, assign, designate, 1a3) To make, constitute. Strong—a primitive root; To give, used with greatest latitude of application(put, make, etc.).

“With”2X——
“Wicked”—evr raw-shaw’—Adj.—1) Wicked, criminal—1a) Guilty one, one guilty of crime(substantive), 1b) Wicked(hostile to God), 1c) Wicked, guilty of sin(against God or man). Strong—Morally wrong; concretely--An (actively)bad person.
“...But with the rich at His death,...”
The intention of those in power, was to levy a criminal’s punishment & death upon The Servant(Jesus). But despite the ill-founded intentions of The Servant’s detractors—those who intended for His death to be dishonorable—His death would ‘actually’ be regarded as honorable. Honorable, due, in part, to the two men who would care for Jesus’ body.
•And so The Servant’s “grave” was NOT actually “with the wicked”, but rather with the “rich at His death.” This may not seem a direct contrast to you & me, but to those of Isaiah’s day & later in Jesus’ day it would have been a significant contrast.
Isaiah prophesied that The Servant would be “with the rich at His death.” This prophesy was fulfilled in actuality in Jesus’ day, as those monetarily/financially “rich” would place their good reputations at great risk, both civilly & spiritually, thru an open commitment to The Servant’s(Jesus’) goodness.
This prophecy was fulfilled particularly thru Joseph of Arimathea who was a council member & Nicodemus who was also a ruler of the Jews(Jn. 3; Jn. 19:38-42).
Lk. 23:50-53—“Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good & just man. He had not consented to their decision & deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate & asked for the body of Jesus. Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, & laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before.”
Mat. 27:59-60—“When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, & laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; & he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, & departed.”
Jn. 3:1-2—“There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night & said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.””
Jn. 19:38-42—After Jesus’ death on the Cross...—“After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; & Pilate gave him permission. So he came & took the body of Jesus. And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh & aloes, about a hundred pounds. Then they took the body of Jesus, & bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, & in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.”
“Rich”—ryse aw-sheeyr’—Adj.—1) Rich, wealthy. Noun—2) The rich, the wealthy, rich man. Strong—Rich, whether literal or figurative(noble) Used 23X.?From—rve aw-shar'; a primitive root; properly--To accumulate; chiefly(specifically)--To grow(causatively--make) rich.
“Death”(See 53:12)—twm maw’-veth—Noun Masc.—1) Death, dying, Death(personified), realm of the dead—1a) Death, 1b) Death by violence(as a penalty), 1c) State of death, place of death. Strong—Death (natural or violent); concretely--The dead, their place or state(hades); figuratively--Pestilence, ruin.
“...Because He had done no violence,...”
These last two phrases answer the question: ?How/Why would The Servant’s death—as a criminal enemy of the state—be considered honorable, when so many wanted to bring Him dishonor?...
...Simply “because” The Servant would live His life among them all without bringing “violence” to His agenda of saving the world from it’s sin(Jn. 3:17).
Jn. 3:17—“For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”
•God the Father, God the Son, & God the Holy Spirit have differing ‘roles’ in saving the world, yet all have the exact same ‘purpose’!
•Jesus’ lack of “violence”—His gentleness & ‘seeming’ milquetoast-ness/wimpishness—in ushering in the Kingdom of God for the Jews, was one of the reasons that the Jews were infuriated with Him...The Jews expected & wanted a typically vengeful, politically motivated, military Messiah, who would mete-out judgment upon their enemies, driving them into oblivion.
Instead, The Servant(Jesus) would tell the Jews to love & pray for their enemies!
Mat. 5:43-45—“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor & hate your enemy.’ “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, & pray for those who spitefully use you & persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil & on the good, & sends rain on the just & on the unjust.”
Instead of vengeance, The Servant(Jesus) would tell them:
Mat. 5:3-16—““Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger & thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile & persecute you, & say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice & be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out & trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp & put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, & it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works & glorify your Father in heaven.”
“Because”—le ‘al—Preposition—1) Upon, on the ground of, according to, on account of, on behalf of, concerning, beside, in addition to, together with, beyond, above, over, by, on to, towards, to, against. Strong—a primitive root; To do or make, in the broadest sense & widest application.
“No”2X—al lo’, awl low’, hl loh(De 3:11) or wl—Adverb—1) Not, no—1a) Not(with verb - absolute prohibition), 1b) Not(with modifier - negation), 1c) Nothing(substantive), 1d) without(with particle), 1e) Before(of time). Strong—a primitive particle; Not(the simple or absolute negation); by implication--No; often used with other particles.
“Violence”—omx khaw-mawce’—Noun Masc.—1) Violence, wrong, cruelty, injustice. Strong—Violence; by implication--Wrong; by metonym--Unjust gain.?From—omx khaw-mas’—a primitive root; To be violent; by implication--To maltreat.
“...Nor was any deceit in His mouth.”
Again—these last two phrases answer the question: ?Why would The Servant’s death—as a criminal enemy of the state—be considered honorable, when so many sought to bring Him dishonor?...
Our Lord Jesus(the promised Servant) was & remains to this day, the flawless, perfect bearer of truth! Therefore you & I should be compelled to do the same by the same Holy Spirit!
1Pet. 2:22—of Jesus...—“Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth;”
Jn. 1:14—“And the Word became flesh & dwelt among us, & we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace & truth.”
Eph. 4:21-25—“...indeed you have heard Him & have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, & be renewed in the spirit of your mind, & that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness & holiness. Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another.”
2Cor. 5:21; 6:1—“For He[God] made Him[Jesus] who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. We then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain.”
1Jn. 3:5—“And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, & in Him there is no sin.”
1Jn. 3:7—“Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.”
“Inasmuch, therefore, as He had not acted like His criminal enemies, He would not receive disgraceful burial with them, but honorable burial with the rich.”—EJYoung

Strong—The mouth(as the means of blowing), whether literal or figurative(particularly speech); specifically--Edge, portion or side; adverbially(with preposition)--According to.?From—hap paw-aw'—a primitive root; To puff, i.e. Blow away.
Argumentation:
Concerning the proper Manner/Attitude/Deportment/Spirit of true righteousness:
Mat. 5:17-20—“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven & earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, & teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does & teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes & Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Concerning RIGHTEOUSNESS:
Gal. 5:18-25—“But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, & the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions & desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Php. 1:29--2:5—“For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, having the same conflict which you saw in me & now hear is in me. Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection & mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,”
Lk. 1:8-17—“So it was, that while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his division, according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot fell to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. And the whole multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense. Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, & fear fell upon him. But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; & your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, & you shall call his name John. And you will have joy & gladness, & many will rejoice at his birth. For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, & shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He will also go before Him in the spirit & power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ & the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
Micah 6:6-8—“With what shall I come before the LORD, And bow myself before the High God? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, With calves a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, Ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?”
Rom. 14:15-18—“Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died. Therefore do not let your good be spoken of as evil; for the kingdom of God is not eating & drinking, but righteousness & peace & joy in the Holy Spirit. For he who serves Christ in these things is acceptable to God & approved by men.”
Hebrews 4:8-16—“For if Joshua had given them[Israel] rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. For the word of God is living & powerful, & sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul & spirit, & of joints & marrow, & is a discerner of the thoughts & intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked & open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy & find grace to help in time of need.”
Ps. 46:1-3—-To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.- A Song for Alamoth.—“God is our refuge & strength, A very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though its waters roar & be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah.”
Rom. 8:13-17—“For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, & if children, then heirs--heirs of God & joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.”
1Pet. 4:1-2—“Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.”
Concerning JUSTIFICATION:
Rom. 4:20-5:2—“He[Abraham] did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, & being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. And therefore “it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was delivered up because of our offenses, & was raised because of our justification. Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, & rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”
“Raised because of our justification” means—‘In order to activate the ‘righteous justification’ of those who place faith in Christ Jesus!’
Acts 13:32-39—“And we declare to you glad tidings--that promise which was made to the fathers. God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm: ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.’ “And that He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, He has spoken thus: ‘I will give you the sure mercies of David.’ “Therefore He also says in another Psalm: ‘You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption.’ “For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, & saw corruption; but He whom God raised up saw no corruption. Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man[Jesus] is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; & by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.”
Gal. 2:11-21—“Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed; for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew & separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision. And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy. But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all, “If you, being a Jew, live in the manner of Gentiles & not as the Jews, why do you compel Gentiles to live as Jews?” We who are Jews by nature, & not sinners of the Gentiles, knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ & not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified. But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is Christ therefore a minister of sin? Certainly not! For if I build again those things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; & the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me & gave Himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.””
Mat. 11:16-19—“But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces & calling to their companions, & saying: ‘We played the flute for you, And you did not dance; We mourned to you, And you did not lament.’ “For John came neither eating nor drinking, & they say, ‘He has a demon.’ “The Son of Man came eating & drinking, & they say, ‘Look, a glutton & a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors & sinners!’ But wisdom is justified by her children.”
