Summary: How would you describe God? A troubleshooter, a distant power, a grandparent? Today, I want to look at the very first thing Isaiah said would be true about this baby Messiah.

How would you describe God?

A troubleshooter – God’s good to have around when I’m in trouble.

A distant power – God isn’t concerned about the ordinary parts of my life.

A grandparent – God gives me what I want.

• Today, I want to look at the very first thing Isaiah said would be true about this baby Messiah.

Isaiah 9:6 NIV

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

• This week, I was so moved by this story of a young king who started out listening and obeying God, but then started taking shortcuts.

• King Asa had made some bold moves, but then started playing it safe.

2 Chronicles 16:8-9 (King Asa)

Yet when you relied on the Lord, he delivered them into your hand. 9 For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war."

• Jesus reminds us of the words of Isaiah.

John 14:26 NIV

“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

1. He will teach us.

• Jesus was the first committed homeschooler ?

• He loves one on one instruction.

“I’ll change anything that’s not pleasing to God.”

“I’ll ask for wisdom.”

“I’ll own my mistakes and not blame others.”

2. He will remind us.

• Just like King Asa, we all tend to forget.

Jesus says the Holy Spirit will also remind us of what we’ve already learned.

Psalms 77:11-12 NIV

“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. 12 I will meditate on all your works and consider all your mighty deeds.”

The Table:

Psalms 95:6-7 NIV

Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; 7 for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.”
