His PROMISE TRUSTED/Believed(:9a, :4-7)

Explanation:(:9a, :4-7)Holding to/Believing the Promise

:9—“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”

There is a dynamic at work in God’s ‘inaction.’

A ‘Damned Fool’ is just that...A fool who, by maintaining trust in everything but God, damns him/herself to an eternal hell.

Literally=‘The Lord does not delay the promise’

“The Lord’s” delay(“slackness”) in fulfilling His “promise” is patterned/designed after & around His desire & means of saving the lost. He offers everyone of every generation the “promise” of His return(:3-4).

(See :15)Rom. 11:25—“For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.”

Some misinterpret God’s ‘delay’ or inaction, to mean that God is indeed a ‘slacker.’ And a ‘slacker’ god is not worthy of anyone’s particular attention. Moreover he/she is no true God!

“Lord”(See :10, 15, 18)—kuriov—Noun Masc.

“Not”2X—ou, ouk, OR--ouc—Particle—1) No, not; in direct questions expecting an affirmative answer. Strong—a primary word; the absolute negative[compare mh] adverb; No or not.

Strong—An announcement(for information, assent or pledge; especially a divine assurance of good).?From—epaggellw—reflexively--To announce upon, i.e. by implication--To engage to do something, to assert something respecting oneself.

“As/Like”(See :10, 16)—wv—Adverb—1) As, like, even as, etc. Strong—probably adverb of comparative from ov, h, o; Which how, i.e. In that manner(very variously used).

Hgeomai & nomizw denote a belief resting not on one's inner feeling or sentiment, but on the due consideration of external grounds, & the weighing & comparing of facts. Hgeomai denotes a more deliberate & careful judgment than nomizw. Strong—middle voice of a (presumed)strengthened form of agw; To lead, i.e. Command(with official authority); figuratively--To deem, i.e. Consider. Used 28X.

“Slackness/Slowness/Delay”—braduthv—Noun Accusative Sing. Fem.—1) Slowness, delay. Strong—Tardiness. Used 1X.--2Pet. 3:9?From—braduv— Slow; figuratively--Dull.

Argumentation:

Mat. 6:19-24—“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth & rust destroy & where thieves break in & steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys & where thieves do not break in & steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one & love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one & despise the other. You cannot serve God & mammon.”

Rom. 12:9—“Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.”

Hab. 2:2-4—“Then the LORD answered me & said: “Write the vision And make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, & it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry. “Behold the proud, His soul is not upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith.”

Heb. 10:32-39—“But recall the former days in which, after you were illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings: partly while you were made a spectacle both by reproaches & tribulations, & partly while you became companions of those who were so treated; for you had compassion on me in my chains, & joyfully accepted the plundering of your goods, knowing that you have a better & an enduring possession for yourselves in heaven. Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise: “For yet a little while, And He who is coming will come & will not tarry. Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.” But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.”

The BENEFIT Of GOD’s LONGSUFFERING(:9b)

Explanation:(:9b)

:9—“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”

There is another dynamic at work in God’s ‘inaction’ than what many may suppose!

Because of the time needed to affect “repentance” among mankind, God’s ‘perfect’ patience is revealed thru His being characterized as “longsuffering.” “Longsuffering” is an example of God’s abundant love toward mankind.

Ezek. 18:23, 30-32—“Do I have any pleasure at all that the wicked should die?” says the Lord GOD, “& not that he should turn from his ways & live?”.....“Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways,” says the Lord GOD. “Repent, & turn from all your transgressions, so that iniquity will not be your ruin. Cast away from you all the transgressions which you have committed, & get yourselves a new heart & a new spirit. For why should you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of one who dies,” says the Lord GOD. “Therefore turn & live!””

Rom. 2:4—“Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, & longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?”

Lk. 15:7—“I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.”

Those who “need no repentance” had obviously repented at the moment of this particular sinner’s repentance, or they would still be in need of repentance, like the one bringing joy to heaven!

Lk. 15:10—“Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.””

1Tim. 2:3-4—“For this is good & acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved & to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

But there will be a time when the time God has allowed/offered for “repentance” will end/be closed.

Jn. 12:35-38—“Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, & departed, & was hidden from them. But although He had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him, that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke: “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?””

God’s delay secures eternal benefits for those of earth(:9a)

BUT...

God’s delay simultaneously secures His personal “longsuffering!”

Boulomai has the wider range of meaning, but yelw is the stronger word; yelw denotes the active resolution, the will urging on to action, see Rom. 7:15, while boulomai is rather to have in thought, to intend, to be determined. boulomai sometimes means no more than to have an inclination. Strong—middle voice of a primary verb.; To “will,” i.e. reflexively--Be willing.

“Any”(See “Some” above)—tiv—Pronoun—1) A certain, a certain one; 2) Some, some time, a while. Strong—an enclitic indefinite pronoun; Some or any person or object.

“Come”(See :10, 12)—cwrew—1Aorist Active Infinitive(purpose/result)—1) To leave space(which may be filled or occupied by another), to make room, give place, yield—1a) To retire, 1b) metaph.--To betake one's self, turn one's self; 2) To go forward, advance, proceed, succeed; 3) To have space or room for receiving or holding something. Cwrew always emphasizes the idea of separation, change of place. It does not, like poreuomai, note the external & perceptible motion. Strong—To be in (given)space, i.e. intransitively--To pass, enter; or transitively--To hold, admit(literally or figuratively). Used 10X.?From—cwra—through the idea of empty expanse; Room, i.e. A space of territory(more or less extensive; often including its inhabitants).

“Repentance”—metanoia—Noun Fem.—1) A change of mind, as it appears to one who repents, of a purpose he has formed or of something he has done. Strong—subjectively--Compunction(for guilt, including reformation); by implication--Reversal(of [another's] decision). Used 24X.?From—meta—1) With, after, behind. Strong—a primary preposition; properly--Denoting accompaniment; “Amid”(local or causal); occupying an intermediate position between apo[off, away from] or ek, ex[from, out] & eiv[to, into] or prov[toward, near to]; less intimate than en[in] & less close than sun[with, together]).—&—noiew—To exercise the mind(observe), i.e. figuratively--To comprehend, heed.

Argumentation:

Rom. 9:22—“What if God, wanting to show His wrath & to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction,”

Jn. 3:14-21—““And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, “that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, & men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light & does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.””

Whenever you avoid the gathered church, you may as well be wearing a sign that reads, “I will not come to the Light of Jesus Christ!”

Mat. 13:24-30—“Another parable He put forth to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; but while men slept, his enemy came & sowed tares among the wheat & went his way. But when the grain had sprouted & produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. So the servants of the owner came & said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ “He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The servants said to him, ‘Do you want us then to go & gather them up?’ “But he said, ‘No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest, & at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather together the tares & bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.”’”

His LOOSING/Releasing The WORLD(:10-11a)

Explanation:(:10-11a)

:10—“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, & the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth & the works that are in it will be burned up.”

:11—“Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct & godliness,”

:10a—“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night,”...

“The day of the Lord” is a specific time in earth’s future history(already predetermined) when YHWH will judge the peoples & nations with finality. Final sentencing will occur(Rev. 20:11-15).

“The day of the Lord” is used in Scripture to describe “both near historical judgments” “& distant eschatological judgments.” Both Testaments depict “the day of the Lord” as—“the day of doom”, “the day of vengeance”, a day of “wrath”, “visitation, & “the great day of God the Almighty.”—MNTC

A detailed arrival time of that “Day” is unknown. However, there are signs of the times that will let us know that the Day is imminent/at hand(Mat. 24:13; Mat. 25:13). It has been imminent now for nearly 2000 years! That delay naturally will be used by some as an excuse for unbelief(:4). Hence verse :9’s admonition that the Lord will not delay in bringing His judgment to bear.

However, God’s people know that “the day of the Lord” will indeed arrive/occur, & that He(“God”) & it(“the day”) will come “as a thief in the night.” That is, though God will finalize this world’s use sometime beyond this current moment, it will be largely unanticipated, unplanned for by the unfaithful of earth(Mat. 24:37-39, 44).

The exact hour of Christ’s return to gather His church to heaven is unknown...As the exact hour of Christ’s return to reap the harvest of the earth is unknown...As the exact hour of the final judgment is unknown. cf.-“Thief in the night”--Mat. 24:42-44; Lk. 12:37-40; 1Thes. 5:1-4; Rev. 3:3; Rev. 16:15.

Yet the signs leading up to those times will be apparent to God’s people. They will be prepared beforehand(Mat. 24:32-34). Everyone has enough knowledge available to them, so that they can be prepared—if they so choose—for “the day of the Lord.”

Lk. 12:37-40—“Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching. Assuredly, I say to you that he will gird himself & have them sit down to eat, & will come & serve them. And if he should come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, & find them so, blessed are those servants. But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched & not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.””

1Thess. 5:1-4—“But concerning the times & the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, “Peace & safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief.”

Rev. 3:3—“Remember therefore how you have received & heard; hold fast & repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, & you will not know what hour I will come upon you.”

Rev.16:15—“Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, & keeps his garments, lest he walk naked & they see his shame.”

:10—“the day of the Lord”—“in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, & the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth & the works that are in it will be burned up.”

:11—“....all these things will be dissolved”...

“The heavens” refers to the visible, physical universe of interstellar & intergalactic space.”—MNTC

The nature of physics will be disallowed, so that everything will become unhinged at a subatomic level. So even the forces that hold together the elements of the entire universe(“heavens”) as we know it—including galaxies, stars, planets, etc.—will be released(‘loosed’-luw)!

Earth with all the “works” it contains will be “burned up” into nothingness.

Beyond that, is the consideration that God having spoken even the elemental things into existence, will also be the One to cause them to become nonexistent.

“Will melt with fervent heat”—Lit.=‘Shall be loosed(“melt”-luw) with burning heat.’

“Will be dissolved”—‘Will be loosed’(“dissolved”-luw)

Likewise in :12—“dissolved”(luw)...Yet, “melt”(thkw--to liquify).

There will be a conflagration unlike anything which has ever occurred in history! It will be universal in extent!

The universe’s demise will occur with a loud rushing roaring noise as of a huge bon-fire consuming it’s fuel.

All created things which do not survive the holy fire of entrance into the heaven of God, will exist no more.

Argumentation:

Col. 1:8-20—Epaphras—“who also declared to us your love in the Spirit. For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, & to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom & spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work & increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience & longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness & conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven & that are on earth, visible & invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him & for Him. And He is before all things, & in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, & by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.”

Jn. 1:1-4—“In the beginning was the Word, & the Word was with God, & the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, & without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, & the life was the light of men.”

*Rev. 21:1-2, 4, 10-16, 17-21, 22-23, 25, 27—“Now I saw a new heaven & a new earth, for the first heaven & the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.”.....““And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.””.....“And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great & high mountain, & showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. Also she had a great & high wall with twelve gates, & twelve angels at the gates, & names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, & three gates on the west. Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations, & on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. And he who talked with me had a gold reed to measure the city, its gates, & its wall. The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand furlongs. Its length, breadth, & height are equal.”.....“Then he measured its wall: one hundred & forty-four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of an angel. The construction of its wall was of jasper; & the city was pure gold, like clear glass. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones: the first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, & the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.”.....“But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty & the Lamb are its temple. The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.”.....“Its gates shall not be shut at all by day(there shall be no night there).”.....“But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”
