BY HIS STRIPES-IX—Isaiah 52:13—53:12

OR: God’s Remedy For Sin

Attention:

Workable Solution:

A man went to see his doctor in the dead of winter because he was suffering from the most miserable cold he’d ever had.

His doctor prescribed some pills, but they didn't help.

The next day the doctor gave him a shot, but that didn't do any good.

On his third visit the doctor told the man to go home & take a hot bath. The doctor told him, “As soon as you are finished bathing I want you to throw open all the windows & stand in the draft. It doesn’t matter how cold you get, just stand there for twenty minutes.”

The patient immediately protested, “But doc, if I do that, I'll surely get pneumonia.”

“I know,” said the physician. “I can cure pneumonia.”

The doctor possessed the remedy for a particular problem!

Jesus is THE remedy for your particular problem...your sin & sinfulness!

Background:

~700 years prior to the Cross of Christ Jesus, Isaiah prophesied of the substitutionary atonement which would one day come thru God’s “Servant”(52:13a). Isaiah records details of the coming Servant’s willing sacrifice for the sake of all sinners.

The prophet Isaiah declared a future time when God’s unique Servant would provide the remedy for sin.

Jesus is God’s remedy for sin.

Why/How/When is Jesus God’s remedy for sin?

Our reception of Jesus as God’s remedy for personal sin.

‘RECEIVE’—More than mental acceptance, which only makes possibilities plausible. ‘Receiving’ on the other hand, has to do with acceptance by the heart, so that what is received, is taken to the point of actual reliance upon that which is received or in a Christian context, Who is received.

Jn. 1:10-13—“He[Jesus, The Word] was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

PATIENT ENDURANCE(53:7)

Explanation:(53:7)Suffering/Perseverance

53:7—“He was oppressed & He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.”

“He was oppressed & He was afflicted,”

This One upon whom YHWH has laid all our iniquity(53:4:a-b, 5, 6c), was both “oppressed” & “afflicted” by men.

•People of the Servant’s time would attempt to coerce Him into conformity & away from what He knows to be true.

“Oppressed”—sgn naw-gas’—Niphal(passive) Perfect—1) To press, drive, oppress, exact, exert demanding pressure—1a) (Qal)--1a1) To press, drive, 1a2) To exact, 1a3) Driver, taskmaster, ruler, oppressor, tyrant, lord, exactor of tribute(participle); 1b) (Niphal)--To be hard pressed. Strong—a primitive root; To drive(an animal, a workman, a debtor, an army); by implication--To tax, harass, tyrannize. Used 23X.

“Afflicted”(See :4)—hne aw-naw’—Niphal(passive) Participle—1) (Qal)--To be occupied, be busied with; 2) To afflict, oppress, humble, be afflicted, be bowed down—2a) (Qal)--2a1) To be put down, become low, 2a2) To be depressed, be downcast, 2a3) To be afflicted, 2a4) To stoop; 2d) (Pual)--2d1) To be afflicted, 2d2) To be humbled. Strong—a primitive root [possibly rather ident. with hne aw-naw’[to eye or heed, i.e. pay attention, to respond to begin to speak, to sing, shout, testify, announce] through the idea of looking down or browbeating]; To depress(literally or figuratively, transitive or intransitive(in various applications)).

“Yet He opened not His mouth;”

However, even though the Servant would be pressured to conform, even to the point of death exacted of Him, Yet He would “not” open His mouth” against them. He would leave them to their fleshly derived devices. He would not argue with them nor would he bad-mouth them. They had chosen their course, giving first place to any false belief that had been levied about Him.

Mat. 9:1-3—“So He[Jesus] got into a boat, crossed over, & came to His own city[Capernaum]. Then behold, they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you.” And at once some of the scribes said within themselves, “This Man blasphemes!””

Mat. 26:59-66—“Now the chief priests, the elders, & all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward & said, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God & to build it in three days.’” And the high priest arose & said to Him, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered & said to Him, “I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!” Jesus said to him, “It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, & coming on the clouds of heaven.” Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, “He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy! What do you think?” They answered & said, “He is deserving of death.”

•Jesus left Himself to/under the jurisdiction & authority of those who were merely ‘humanly prescribed’!

“Opened”2X—xtp paw-thakh’—Qal Imperfect—1) To open—1a) (Qal)--To open; 1b) (Niphal)--To be opened, be let loose, be thrown open; 1c) (Piel)--1c1) To free, 1c2) To loosen, 1c3) To open, open oneself; 1d) (Hithpael)--To loose oneself; 2) To carve, engrave; 2a) (Piel)--To engrave; 2b) (Pual)--To be engraved. Strong—a primitive root; To open wide (literally or figuratively); specifically--To loosen, begin, plough, carve.

“Not”2X—al lo’, awl low’, hl loh(De 3:11) or wl—Adverb—1) Not, no—1a) Not(with verb - absolute prohibition), 1b) Not(with modifier - negation), 1c) Nothing(substantive), 1d) without(with particle), 1e) Before(of time). Strong—a primitive particle; Not(the simple or absolute negation); by implication--No; often used with other particles.

“Mouth”2X(See 52:15)—hp peh—Noun Masc.—1) Mouth—1a) Mouth(of man), 1b) Mouth(as organ of speech), 1c) Mouth(of animals), 1d) Mouth, opening, orifice(of a well, river, etc.), 1e) Extremity, end. Strong—The mouth(as the means of blowing), whether literal or figurative(particularly speech); specifically--Edge, portion or side; adverbially(with preposition)--According to.?From—hap paw-aw'—a primitive root; To puff, i.e. Blow away.

“He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,”

This Servant was completely innocent of wrongdoing, yet He was “led” to “the slaughter” by the determination of men.

A “lamb” is utterly helpless against those who would “slaughter” it.

That the “lamb” goes to “slaughter” sees the “lamb’s” life as expendable. Thus it’s death in intentional.

Jesus’ death came about by means of His being “led” “to the slaughter” as is an innocent & helpless “lamb.”

“Led/Brought”—lby yaw-bal’—Hophal(passive of Hiphil(causative)) Imperfect—1) To bring, lead, carry, conduct, bear along—1a) (Hiphil)--1a1) To bear along, bring, 1a2) To carry away, lead away, 1a3) To lead, conduct; 1b) (Hophal)--1b1) To be borne along, 1b2) To be borne(to the grave), 1b3) To be brought, be led, be conducted. Strong—a primitive root; properly--To flow; causatively--To bring(especially with pomp). Used 18X.

“Lamb”—hs seh, OR--ys say—Noun Masc.—1) One of a flock, lamb, sheep, goat, young sheep, young goat—1a) Sheep, goat, 1b) Flock(collective). Strong—A member of a flock, i.e. A sheep or goat. Used 46X.?Probably from—hav shaw-aw'; a primitive root; To rush; by implication--To desolate.

“Slaughter”—xbj teh’-bakh—Noun Masc.—1) Slaughter, slaughtering, animal—1a) Slaughtering, slaughter(of animals), 1b) Slaughter(fig.). Strong—properly--Something slaughtered; hence, A beast(or meat, as butchered); abstractly--Butchery(or concretely--A place of slaughter). Used 12X.

“And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.”

Why does “a sheep” remain silent “before it’s shearers”? Trust & certainty! Submission to it’s course. The “sheep” is utterly powerless to overcome in the realm of humanity.

•A seasoned/enlightened/experienced “sheep” may fight being sheared to some degree, but it knows it is not destined to ‘die’ upon being sheared, but knows it will return to the flock afterward.

•Jesus knew his “shearers” would continue unhindered, bent on their course to defrock Him of any open approval by God.

•The seasoned/enlightened/experienced “sheep” knows the intent & follow-thru of it’s “shearers”!

In the same way, God’s Servant, Jesus, would approach His impending death on the Cross with the full knowledge that His Father, would not allow Him to see decay(Ps. 16:10; Acts 2:27; Acts 13:35).

Ps. 16:8-10—“I have set the LORD always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, & my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope. For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.”

Acts 2:25-31—the apostle Peter applies Ps. 16:8-10 to Jesus, the Messiah—““For David says concerning Him: ‘I foresaw the LORD always before my face, For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken. Therefore my heart rejoiced, & my tongue was glad; Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope. For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence.’ “Men & brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead & buried, & his tomb is with us to this day. Therefore, being a prophet, & knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.”

Acts 13:35-39—[the apostle Paul also states]—“Therefore He also says in another Psalm: ‘You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption.’ “For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, & saw corruption; but He whom God raised up saw no corruption. Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; & by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.”

Yet, though Jesus would seek His Father’s will in the Garden of Gethsemane, He would find that will, ONLY under such duress & anguish of soul, that His sweat would become like great drops of blood(Lk. 22:44).

Lk. 22:41-46—“And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, & He knelt down & prayed, saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. When He rose up from prayer, & had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. Then He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise & pray, lest you enter into temptation.””

Indeed God’s Servant would die, but His death would purposefully pay for the sins of mankind. Therefore as a sheep is unable to violate the will of it’s shepherds &/or slaughterers, so God’s Servant would not violate His relationship to His crucifiers!

He knows truth & abides in truth but He will not force truth upon anyone before it’s time. That time is determined to occur...We will recognize it when it arrives, but it is not meant for us to know the ‘exact’ time when it will all begin.

Acts 1:6-8—After Jesus’ resurrection & prior to His ascensxion into heaven—“Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; & you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, & in all Judea & Samaria, & to the end of the earth.”

Argumentation:

We want you to know that contrary to what so-called ‘health-&-wealth’ preachers may say, PATIENT ENDURANCE is a biblical virtue, it is of the Holy Spirit, it is the real challenge of true Christian commitment to God!

Lev. 19:11-18—“‘You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another. ‘And you shall not swear by My name falsely, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the LORD. ‘You shall not cheat your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of him who is hired shall not remain with you all night until morning. ‘You shall not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling block before the blind, but shall fear your God: I am the LORD. ‘You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty. In righteousness you shall judge your neighbor. ‘You shall not go about as a talebearer among your people; nor shall you take a stand against the life of your neighbor: I am the LORD. ‘You shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall surely rebuke your neighbor, & not bear sin because of him. ‘You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.

The above statements highlight the fact that some of God’s people WILL be tempted to & in fact will—“Steal”, “Deal falsely”, “Lie”, Cheat their neighbors, “Rob”, Wrongly hold-back “wages”, “Curse” the deaf, Willingly cause the “blind” to stumble, Officially “judge” “unjustly”, Invent false things about others, Assist others in the wrongful destruction of their own neighbor’s life, “Hate” even their own “brother” in the depth of their “heart”, NOT take a stand against the occurrence of sin by others, Take “vengeance” upon others, Bear “grudges” against their own people, NOT “love” their neighbor in the same way “as” they love themselves.

•All of these sins will flourish IF Patient Endurance is NOT accepted as normative for God’s people!

*1Pet. 2:20-23—“For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God. For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: “Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth”; who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously;”

Heb. 10:32-39—gladly received—“But recall the former days in which, after you were illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings: partly while you were made a spectacle both by reproaches & tribulations, & partly while you became companions of those who were so treated; for you had compassion on me in my chains, & joyfully accepted the plundering of your goods, knowing that you have a better & an enduring possession for yourselves in heaven. Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise: “For yet a little while, And He who is coming will come & will not tarry. Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.” But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.”

Rom. 2:4-10—“Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, & longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? But in accordance with your hardness & your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath & revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, & immortality; but to those who are self-seeking & do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness--indignation & wrath, tribulation & anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first & also of the Greek; but glory, honor, & peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first & also to the Greek.”

Rom. 5:1-4—“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, & rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; & perseverance, character; & character, hope.”

Rom. 8:22-25—“For we know that the whole creation groans & labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.”

Rom. 12:10-13, 17-19—“Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.”.....“Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.

Rom. 15:5—“Now may the God of patience & comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, that you may with one mind & one mouth glorify the God & Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

1Cor. 4:11-14—“To the present hour we[apostolic workers] both hunger & thirst, & we are poorly clothed, & beaten, & homeless. And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things until now. I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn you.”

2Cor. 1:5-7—“For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ. Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation & salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation & salvation. And our hope for you is steadfast, because we know that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation.”

1Cor. 9:24-27—“Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. But I discipline my body & bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.”

Heb. 12:1-2—“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, & the sin which so easily ensnares us, & let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author & finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, & has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

A Live Oak is a common tree in coastal Southeastern U.S./They can grow in pure stands/Their beautiful artistic gnarled trunks are easy to spot especially when the undergrowth has been removed/They live very near the ocean/So these trees weather a great deal of buffeting by the wind & by salt-spray/But then that is partly what brings about the individuality & characteristic beauty of each tree & of a grouping of them/Likewise Christians & the Church are contoured thru PATIENT ENDURANCE

‘Timex’ watch tag-line used to be, “‘It takes a lickin’, & keeps on tickin’”/That let any consumer know that ‘durability’ was characteristic of their dependable product/PATIENT ENDURANCE

You & I have both met Christians who juuuuust can’t seem to keep their mouths shut when they are facing or have faced some difficulty which they equate to being wrongly or undeservedly treated badly.

They can’t seem to muster up any Christian finesse. For such people it’s all about vengeance—getting back—tit-for-tat—eye-for-an-eye, etc. They DEMAND ‘fairness’ while fairness is missing(he/she/they owe me) from their own personal demands. They demand ‘justice’ when justice goes their way. Admittedly we all learn compassion from such ‘unfair’ & ‘unjust’ situations. But some simply will not have it! They want to control every situation, taking God's place & the place of those whom God has called to His work.
