The Cosmic War
Ephesians 6:10-24
Introduction: Paul carries us from profound doctrine to practical duty. David Dockery said, “Paul painted a chilling picture of the cosmic war raging between Satan and God’s people.” If we look around we can see this war escalating. We behold a-morality, immorality, satanic influences, cults, occults, religious pluralism, and every imaginable attack on the home, family and church. What should we do by way of practical duty?
I. Realize The Enemy (10-12)
Satan – the devil, the prince of this world, the god of this sphere, the tempter, and the accuser is your enemy! We’re not out to get along with him but to battle him. Realize he is out to destroy, divide, discourage and discredit. Some ignore. Some overreact. What is it we are to realize?
A. His Strength (10) He is not omnipotent but he is so strong that we are no match for him without God’s strength.
B. His Schemes (11) Watch out for his strategies and subtle ways. He’s very tricky. He is compared to a lion and a dragon. He can destroy a man’s body, home, wealth and friends. Just ask Job.
C. His Subjects (12) He has a whole host of helpers. Do a personal study of each of these. You will find he commands a host of wicked spirits that influence humanity.
II. Utilize The Equipment
Military illustrations were favorites with Paul. Be fully equipped and properly armed. God has given all we need to deal with the devil.
A. The Purpose of the Equipment (11, 13) “Stand” right in the middle of enemy territory and be both defensive and offensive.
B. The Pieces of the Equipment (14-17)
1. Belt Satan is a liar. Only truth will defeat him. The belt holds everything else together.
2. Breastplate Protected vital organs. Guard your heart.
3. Shoes You need balance and stability.
4. Shield Faith in God destroys Satan’s fiery darts.
5. Helmet He attacks the mind.
6. Sword Use the word.
III. Maximize The Energy (18-20)
Prayer is what energizes us.
A. What? Use all kinds of prayer. Praise, confession, petition, requests.
B. When? At all times.
C. Where? In the spirit.
D. How? Be aware and alert. Pray about everything.
E. Whom? All the saints.
Conclusion: See v.13 “having done all.” Having fought to the end.
