BY HIS STRIPES-VI—Isaiah 52:13—53:1-12

OR: God’s Remedy For Sin

Attention:

Spider webs:

Spider webs have been studied by scientists for years.

“A single spider can produce up to seven different types of silk for different uses.”—‘Spider Silk’ @ en.wikipedia.org

“Spider silk stands out for its extreme mechanical properties. It is the fibre that can absorb the most energy before it breaks, due to a combination of tensile strength & extensibility. It can absorb three times more energy than Kevlar before breaking. ‘It’s not the strongest & it is not the most elastic material, but it’s the best material at combining these features,’ says Thomas Scheibel, professor of biomaterials at Bayreuth University in Germany.”—Anthony King(2017) @ ChemistryWorld.com. “Weight for weight, [spider]silk is stronger than steel, but not as strong as Kevlar. [spider]Silk is, however, tougher than either.”—Wiki. “15 years ago, there were maybe five to 10 groups working on spider silk & almost no companies. Now there are a few dozen groups & at least three nicely running biotech companies.’” “basic science researchers are seeking novel applications, ranging from nerve regrowth to consumer packaging & glue. Its lure is not simply toughness: spider silk does not appear to cause a strong immune, allergic or inflammatory reaction & it biodegrades to harmless end products, all especially useful in biomedicine. Crucially, as a recombinant protein, researchers have been sticking bioactive molecules onto it, for added functionality.”—A. King(2017) @ ChemistryWorld.com

Spider silk is so small & thin as to be almost imperceptible. It is ‘seemingly’ insignificant. Yet it it a source for chemical & physical engineering in numerous applications.

It is a seeming paradox that something that is produced in nature, something so thin & minuscule, is the subject of such research as to produce better, tougher, & lighter products than is currently available.

It is also a paradox that the Savior of mankind was treated as a criminal.

Background:

~700 years prior to the Cross of Christ Jesus, Isaiah prophesied of the substitutionary atonement which would one day come thru God’s “Servant”(52:13a). Isaiah records details of the coming Servant’s willing sacrifice for the sake of all sinners.

The prophet Isaiah declared a future time when God’s unique Servant would provide the remedy for sin.

Jesus is God’s remedy for sin.

Why/How/When is Jesus God’s remedy for sin?

Our reception of Jesus as God’s remedy for personal sin.

‘RECEIVE’—More than mental acceptance, which only makes possibilities plausible. ‘Receiving’ has to do with acceptance by the heart, so that what is received, is taken to the point of actual reliance upon what or Who is received.

ESTEEM(53:2-3)

Explanation/Argumentation:(53:2-3)Value

53:2—“For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him.”

The “He” is reference to the “Servant”(52:13ff).

The “Him” is reference to YHWH God.

The promised Servant of God will “grow up” in God’s presence(“before Him”). The fact that the Servant will “grow up” tells us that He will be a Son of Man, Yet with God’s full parentage & direction...

“Grow up”—hle aw-law’—Qal Imperfect—1) To go up, ascend, climb—1a) (Qal)--1a1) To go up, ascend, 1a2) To meet, visit, follow, depart, withdraw, retreat, 1a3) To go up, come up(of animals), 1a4) To spring up, grow, shoot forth(of vegetation), 1a5) To go up, go up over, rise(of natural phenomenon), 1a6) To come up(before God), 1a7) To go up, go up over, extend(of boundary), 1a8) To excel, be superior to. Strong—a primitive root; To ascend, intransitively--Be high or actively--Mount; used in a great variety of senses, primary & secondary, literal & figurative.

Thus he will also be Divine or of heavenly origin...

Jn. 1:15, 29-30—“John[the Baptist] bore witness of Him & cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’”.....“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, & said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’”

Mat. 3:16-17—“When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; & behold, the heavens were opened to Him, & He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove & alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

“Before Him” is not so much a statement of God’s omniscience as it is a statement of the constancy of God’s divine specific direction, guidance, & care for the Servant. That is, looking from our perspective after the Cross with more perfect knowledge, back to the time of Isaiah before the Cross, we know that the Servant, will be ‘raised’ in(Mat. 11:27; Lk. 10:22; Jn. 14:10-11, 20; Jn. 1:18; Jn. 6:46; Jn. 8:38) & because of(Lk. 1:34-35; Rom. 8:2-4; Gal. 4:4-5; 1Jn. 4:9-10) God’s presence.

“Before”(See 53:7; 53:3—“faces”)—Mynp paw-neeym' plural(but always as sing.) of an unused noun hnp paw-neh'—Noun Masc.—1) Face—1a) Face, faces, 1b) Presence, person, 1c) Face(of seraphim or cherubim), 1d) Face(of animals), 1e) Face, surface(of ground), 1f) as adverb of locative/temporal—1f1) Before & behind, toward, in front of, forward, formerly, from beforetime, before, 1g) with prep—1g1) In front of, before, to the front of, in the presence of, in the face of, at the face or front of, from the presence of, from before, from before the face of. Strong—The face(as the part that turns); used in a great variety of applications(literally & figuratively); also(with prepositional prefix) as a preposition--Before, etc..

Uniquely raised ‘IN’ God’s presence:...

Mat. 11:27—“All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, & no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, & the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”

Lk. 10:22—““All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, & no one knows who the Son is except the Father, & who the Father is except the Son, & the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.””

Jn. 14:10-11, 20—“Do you not believe that I am in the Father, & the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father & the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.”.....““At that day you will know that I am in My Father, & you in Me, & I in you.””

Jn. 6:46—“Not that anyone has seen the Father, except He who is from God; He has seen the Father.”

Jn. 1:18—“No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.”

Jn. 8:38—“I speak what I have seen with My Father, & you do what you have seen with your father.”

Uniquely raised ‘BECAUSE OF’ God’s presence:...

Lk. 1:34-35—“Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” And the angel answered & said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, & the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.”

Rom. 8:2-4—“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin & death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

Gal. 4:4-5—“But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.”

1Jn. 4:9-10—“In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us & sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

Php. 2:5-11—“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, & coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself & became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him & given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, & of those on earth, & of those under the earth, & that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

“As a tender plant”—However, although the unique Servant will arise from God Himself, He will also display a ‘vulnerability’ in the same manner “as a tender plant.”

“As a tender plant” pictures the mortal weakness of humanity with which the coming Servant would be partaker(Heb. 2:14-15; Php. 2:7-8). It also pictures the total dependance of the Servant(the Son) upon the strength of the root(being the Father). Such a “tender plant”(suckling/shoot) derives its strength of life from it’s having the same essence as the “root”, though expressing itself differently. The “tender plant” is an expression of “the arm of the Lord”(:1b).

Heb. 2:14-15—“Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh & blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, & release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”

“Php. 2:7-8—“but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, & coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself & became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”

“Tender Plant/Tender Shoot/Sprout”—qnwy yow-nak’—Noun Masc.—1) Sucker, suckling, sapling, young plant. Strong—A sucker; hence--A twig(of a tree felled & sprouting).?Active participle of—qny yaw-nak'; a primitive root; To suck; causatively--To give milk.

“As a root out of dry ground” describes the separation of time from which David(~<1000BC) served God, until the time of the Servant’s arrival & subsequent reign on the throne of David(Isa. 11:1; Jer. 23:5; Lk. 1:32-33; Mat. 1:1-17; Lk. 3:23-38). “Dry ground” describes the utter absence of life-giving ability, yet the “root”/Rod/Branch would indeed spring forth from it.

Isa. 11:1-5—“There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom & understanding, The Spirit of counsel & might, The Spirit of knowledge & of the fear of the LORD. His delight is in the fear of the LORD, And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, Nor decide by the hearing of His ears; But with righteousness He shall judge the poor, And decide with equity for the meek of the earth; He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked. Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins, And faithfulness the belt of His waist.”

Jer. 23:5—““Behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD, “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign & prosper, And execute judgment & righteousness in the earth.””

Lk. 1:32-33—“He will be great, & will be called the Son of the Highest; & the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, & of His kingdom there will be no end.”

“Root/Shoot”—vrv sheh’-resh—Noun Masc.—1) Root—1a) Root(literal), 1b) Root(of people involving firmness or permanence)(fig), 1c) Root, bottom(as lowest stratum)(fig). Strong—A root(literally or figuratively). Used 33X.?From—vrv shaw-rash'; a primitive root; To root, i.e. Strike into the soil, or by implication--To pluck from it.

“Dry/Parched”—hyu tsee-yaw’—Noun Fem.—1) Dryness, drought, desert. Strong—from an unused root meaning to parch; Aridity; concretely--A desert. Used 16X.??Basis for ‘Zion’?

“Ground”—Ura eh’-rets—Noun Fem.—1) Land, earth—1a) Earth—1a1) Whole earth(as opposed to a part), 1a2) Earth(as opposed to heaven), 1a3) Earth(inhabitants), 1b) Land—1b1) Country, territory, 1b2) District, region, 1b3) Tribal territory, 1b4) Piece of ground, 1b5) Land of Canaan, Israel, 1b6) Inhabitants of land, 1b7) Sheol, land without return, (under)world, 1b8) City(-state), 1c) Ground, surface of the earth—1c1) Ground, 1c2) Soil, 1d) (in phrases)—1d1) People of the land, 1d2) Space or distance of country(in measurements of distance), 1d3) Level or plain country, 1d4) Land of the living, 1d5) End(s) of the earth, 1e) (almost wholly late in usage)—1e1) Lands, countries—1e1a) Often in contrast to Canaan. Strong—from an unused root probably meaning to be firm; The earth(at large, or partitively a land).

“He has no form or comeliness;

And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him.”

“He has no form or comeliness”

The destined Servant will have nothing about His ‘appearance’ that will cause men to be drawn to Him. He will possess no extraordinary outward attractiveness or anything about His form that stands-out concerning His being God’s Servant.

cf.-1Sam. 9:2— King Saul was a head taller than most.

1Sam. 9:2—“And he[Kish(Saul’s father)] had a choice & handsome son whose name was Saul. There was not a more handsome person than he among the children of Israel. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people.”

Jer. 9:23-24—“Thus says the LORD: “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands & knows Me, That I am the LORD, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, & righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the LORD.”

Thus the Servant’s ‘appearance’ will be no different from anyone else’s. Thereby nothing about His ‘appearance’ will make Him particularly appealing or warrant Him any special/exceptional/outstanding notice.

Thus any ‘fanciful’ picture people may concoct of Jesus’ appearance is far-fetched & a product of man’s imagination.

“No”—al lo’, awl low’, hl loh(De 3:11) or wl—Adverb—1) Not, no—1a) Not(with verb - absolute prohibition), 1b) Not(with modifier - negation), 1c) Nothing(substantive), 1d) without(with particle), 1e) Before(of time). Strong—a primitive particle; Not(the simple or absolute negation); by implication--No; often used with other particles.

“Form/Stately Form/Beauty”—rat to’-ar—Noun Masc.—1) Shape, form, outline, figure, appearance. Strong—Outline, i.e. figure or appearance. Used 15X.?From—rat taw-ar'; a primitive root; To delineate; reflexive--To extend.

“Comeliness/Majesty/Splendor”—rdh haw-dawr’—Noun Masc.—1) Ornament, splendor, honor—1a) Ornament, 1b) Splendor, majesty, 1c) Honor, glory. Strong—Magnificence, i.e. Ornament or splendor. Used 30X.?From—rdh haw-dar’—Verb—a primitive root; To swell up(literally or figuratively, active or passive); by implication--To favor or honor, be high or proud.

“And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him.”

The Servant will be “seen”(Jn. 1:14, 18)...

Those who “see Him” will not only be the “we”(you & I) of this generation, but “we” of Isaiah’s generation, as well as the “we” of Jesus’ generation.

Job says that He will see his Redeemer with his own eyes(Job 19:25-27). And if he “sees” God then he will also “see” God’s Servant one day.

Job 19:25-27—“For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth; And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, That in my flesh I shall see God, Whom I shall see for myself, And my eyes shall behold, & not another. How my heart yearns within me!”

Again...Upon the Servant’s being seen with the eye, there will be no stand-alone “beauty” about Him that will cause anyone to be “desirous” of Him or to be specifically attracted Him.

Mat. 12:30-33—“He who is not with Me is against Me, & he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad. Therefore I say to you, every sin & blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come. Either make the tree good & its fruit good, or else make the tree bad & its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.”

Jn. 6:33-48—“For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven & gives life to the world.” Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.” And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, & he who believes in Me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen Me & yet do not believe. All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, & the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son & believes in Him may have everlasting life; & I will raise him up at the last day.” The Jews then complained about Him, because He said, “I am the bread which came down from heaven.” And they said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father & mother we know? How is it then that He says, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” Jesus therefore answered & said to them, “Do not murmur among yourselves. No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; & I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who has heard & learned from the Father comes to Me. Not that anyone has seen the Father, except He who is from God; He has seen the Father. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life. I am the bread of life.”

Jn. 12:25-33—“He who loves his life will lose it, & he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; & where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor. Now My soul is troubled, & what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it & will glorify it again.” Therefore the people who stood by & heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.” Jesus answered & said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” This He said, signifying by what death He would die.”

Js. 4:7-10—“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil & he will flee from you. Draw near to God & He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; & purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament & mourn & weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning & your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, & He will lift you up.”

Mat. 11:27-30—“All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, & no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, & the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. Come to Me, all you who labor & are heavy laden, & I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you & learn from Me, for I am gentle & lowly in heart, & you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy & My burden is light.”

Heb. 7:19—“...the law[keeping a set of rules] made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.”

Heb. 11:6—“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, & that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

Heb. 10:22—“let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience & our bodies washed with pure water.”

“See/Look Upon/”(See 52:15)—har raw-aw’—Qal Imperfect—1) To see, look at, inspect, perceive, consider—1a) (Qal)--1a1) To see, 1a2) To see, perceive, 1a3) To see, have vision, 1a4) To look at, see, regard, look after, see after, learn about, observe, watch, look upon, look out, find out, 1a5) To see, observe, consider, look at, give attention to, discern, distinguish, 1a6) To look at, gaze at. Strong—a primitive root; To see, literally or figuratively(in numerous applications, direct & implied, transitive, intransitive & causative).

“Beauty/Appearance”—harm mar-eh’—Noun Masc.—1) Sight, appearance, vision—1a) Sight, phenomenon, spectacle, appearance, vision, 1b) What is seen, 1c) A vision(supernatural), 1d) Sight, vision(power of seeing). Strong—A view(the act of seeing); also--An appearance(the thing seen), whether(real)--A shape(especially if handsome, comeliness; often plural--the looks), OR mental--A vision.?From—har raw-aw'; a primitive root; To see, literally or figuratively(in numerous applications, direct & implied, transitive, intransitive & causative).

“Desire/Attracted”—dmx khaw-mad’—Qal Imperfect——Verb—1) To desire, covet, take pleasure in, delight in—1a) (Qal)--To desire; 1b) (Niphal)--To be desirable; 1c) (Piel)--To delight greatly, desire greatly. —Noun Fem.—2) Desirableness, preciousness. Strong—a primitive root; To delight in. Used 21X.

53:3—“He is despised & rejected by men, A Man of sorrows & acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, & we did not esteem Him.”

“He is despised & rejected by men, A Man of sorrows & acquainted with grief.”

As a result of men’s lack of ‘desire’ for the Servant, He will be generally “despised & rejected” by them.

“Despised” in the Hebrew sense is removed from “the strength of emotion” which the English implies. The force of the Hebrew “means to consider something or someone to be worthless, unworthy of attention.” The coming Messiah would thus “not suffer a conscious & deliberate rejection so much as a hasty dismissal.”—NICOT(1998)

Jn. 1:10-11—“He was in the world, & the world was made through Him, & the world did not know Him. He came to His own, & His own did not receive Him.”

Likewise “rejected” enforces the same thought as “Despised”—This is not an outright malicious ‘rejection’ as we might suppose reading from the English. It is ‘rejection’ in the sense of being indifferent & flippant toward the Lord’s ‘seemingly’ innocuous Servant(Christ).

*Although such a ‘hasty dismissal’ readily becomes escalated beyond inattention, when it involves an affront to existing belief, doctrine, & lifestyle!

Thereby, the promised unique Servant of God will live out the time of His earthly ministry for the sake of mankind, as “a Man of sorrows” who will be well “acquainted with grief.”

Isa. 49:5-11—“And now the LORD says, Who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant, To bring Jacob back to Him, So that Israel is gathered to Him (For I shall be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, And My God shall be My strength), Indeed He says, ‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob, And to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’” Thus says the LORD, The Redeemer of Israel, their Holy One, To Him whom man despises, To Him whom the nation abhors, To the Servant of rulers: “Kings shall see & arise, Princes also shall worship, Because of the LORD who is faithful, The Holy One of Israel; And He has chosen You.” Thus says the LORD: “In an acceptable time I have heard You, And in the day of salvation I have helped You; I will preserve You & give You As a covenant to the people, To restore the earth, To cause them to inherit the desolate heritages; That You may say to the prisoners, ‘Go forth,’ To those who are in darkness, ‘Show yourselves.’ “They shall feed along the roads, And their pastures shall be on all desolate heights. They shall neither hunger nor thirst, Neither heat nor sun shall strike them; For He who has mercy on them will lead them, Even by the springs of water He will guide them. I will make each of My mountains a road, And My highways shall be elevated.”

Jn. 15:19-16:1—“If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. If I had not come & spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. He who hates Me hates My Father also. If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen & also hated both Me & My Father. But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’[Ps. 69:4] “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning. These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble.”

Isa. 50:5-10—“The Lord GOD has opened My ear; And I was not rebellious, Nor did I turn away. I gave My back to those who struck Me, And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame & spitting. For the Lord GOD will help Me; Therefore I will not be disgraced; Therefore I have set My face like a flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed. He is near who justifies Me; Who will contend with Me? Let us stand together. Who is My adversary? Let him come near Me. Surely the Lord GOD will help Me; Who is he who will condemn Me? Indeed they will all grow old like a garment; The moth will eat them up. Who among you fears the LORD? Who obeys the voice of His Servant? Who walks in darkness And has no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD And rely upon his God.”
