Summary: What we say and do should glorify God and not bring praise or glory to us as individuals.

Glorified

John 13: 31 - 35

Intro: In 1993 Tina Turner released the song, “What’s Love Got To

Do With It?” What’s love but a second-hand emotion. What’s love got to do, got to do with it? Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?” --- Ask yourself, “What DOES love have to do with being a Christian?”

I VS. 34 “I give you a new COMMANDMENT!”

A The GK word used here for commandment is entolé The definition of the Greek word is: “ It is a directly addressed injunction concerning matters of moral gravity, not limited in duration or person; but, incumbent on all individuals of the addressed class.”

B This is the only “command” given by Jesus to his disciples and, consequently, to us. It is an order such as an officer would give to their troops.

C It is not a suggestion! It is a command. It is not optional; it is mandatory. In order to be a follower of Jesus we must love.

II Second part of Verse 34 “that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.

A So, I ask you as Tina Turner would ask, “What’s love got to do with it?”

B There is a big difference in the kind of love of which Tina sang and the love that Jesus commanded. The love Jesus commanded is not some sappy feeling for another person.

C The GK. word is agapao. It means to seek the best for another with no thought of what YOU might receive in return.

III We miss the point if we think of love is about making us look better in the eyes of the world or even making us feel better.

A Jesus uses two important verbs in this passage. The first is the verb “LOVE” and the second is GLORIFY.

B The verb “glorify (doxaz?) repeated 5 times carries the follow meanings: “to exalt and honor, to praise extravagantly, to honor or to estol.”

C What love’s got to do with, it is to love others as a way of glorifying God, not ourselves.

Concl: This new command does not tell you, “Love others if you want to go to heaven,” Or, “love others so others will know you are a disciples of Christ Jesus.” The command is to love others to bring glory to God. --- Do this is you want to serve God. --- Do this if you want to praise God. --- Do this if you want God to be glorified!
