Summary: You & I have some-thing that follows us wherever we go. That which follows & trails behind each of us is what the Bible calls your ‘works.’ These ‘works’ all ‘follow’ you either into the arms of Jesus or thru the gates of hell.

‘YOU ARE BEING FOLLOWED’—Revelation 14:13c_iii

Attention:

‘Electric Eye’(1982), by the secular British rock band, Judas Priest.

Up here in space,

I'm looking down on you.

My lasers trace,

Everything you do

You think you've private lives,

Think nothing of the kind

There is no true escape,

I'm watching all the time.

I'm made of metal,

My circuits gleam.

I am perpetual,

I keep the country clean

I'm elected electric spy,

I'm protected electric eye

Always in focus,

You can't feel my stare.

I zoom into you,

But you don't know I'm there.

I take a pride in probing all your secret moves,

My tearless retina takes pictures that can prove.

I'm made of metal,

My circuits gleam.

I am perpetual,

I keep the country clean

Electric eye, in the sky,

Feel my stare, always there.

There's nothing you can do about it,

Develop & expose

I feed upon your every thought,

And so my power grows.

I'm made of metal,

My circuits gleam.

I am perpetual,

I keep the country clean

Protected. Detective. Electric eye.

*That secular song covertly says that ‘big government’ is the bane of personal freedom.

*What that song does NOT overtly say, is that the ‘Electric Eye’(the satellite collector of data) is directed by those who are sinful, fallible, potentially prideful & thus will force you to adhere to their sin-tainted will. Sinfulness is lodged in the heart of all people, including those who head big & potentially authoritarian government. The ever-present nature of sin is what makes ‘big government’ dangerous!

Being followed would make anyone uncomfortable at the least...It can make us ‘ill-at-ease’...it can make us nervous. Being followed makes us nervous because it takes away our personal freedom. So being followed ‘naturally’ make us anticipate ill will from the one following. Being followed makes us anticipate malicious or hurtful actions toward ourselves.

Need:

However, you & I have some-'thing' that follows us wherever we go. It trails along behind you, & is constantly with each of us.

*That which follows & trails behind each of us is what the Bible calls your ‘works.’

Your ‘works’ are a result of the decisions of your life. Your decisions are governed by your loves, focus, heart’s desire, motives.

These ‘works’ all ‘follow’ you into the arms of Jesus or thru the gates of & into hell. Our ‘works’ remain & impact others long after you & I are gone from this earth. The particulars of the ‘works’ which follow you are a result of your rejection or acceptance of Christ Jesus.

Your ‘works’ are the general result, as well as the detailed results of your choices; Your ‘works’ consist of your aid to others & your hindrances to others;...They consist of your escapes from reality, & your perseverance in Christ;...They consist of your collateral damage & the collateral good you cause;...Your casualties & victories; Your good & bad. Your following Christ or not following Christ.

Many people mistakenly hope that their ‘good’ will eventually outweigh their ‘bad’, mistakenly supposing that the eternal determination of their lives is held in the balance of a scale.

What these do NOT realize is that the eternal determination of their lives is not a scaled act of balance at all!

The REALITY is that the eternal determination of your life is set by your personal choice to trust Jesus’ sacrificial atonement for your sinfulness! The eternal determination of your life is actually about the surrender of your life to God thru Christ Jesus! It has nothing to do with a good/bad balancing act at all!

Rather the determination of your eternal destiny depends upon God’s goodness, & His payment for your sin & your faith in that payment.

Today I invite you to consider the fact that...

‘YOU ARE BEING FOLLOWED’—Revelation 14:13c_iii

Explanation: Rev. 14:12-13c_iii

Rev. 14:12—“Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God & the faith of Jesus.”

“Here is”—A note of contrast to those tormented—The previous(14:6-11) is a prime example of the need for “perseverance” in regard to “the saints”. This need for perseverance is directed to those who will read this prophecy of man’s future.

These same “saints” are the ones who “keep the commandments of God.”

Perseverance today is preparation for tomorrow.

We were told that the rest of the offspring of the woman(true Israel, thru Jesus) are those who “keep the commandments of God”(12:17).

When everything around you seems to be falling apart...God’s people persevere, & are faithful, & are loyal to God thru it all! They remain holy(“saints”)—patiently keeping God’s commandments by their faith!

“Here”2X—wde—Adverb—1) Here, to this place, etc. Strong—In this same spot, i.e. Here or hither.?From an adverb form of—ode including the feminine--hde, & the neuter--tode—1) This one here, these things, as follows, thus. Strong—the same, i.e. This or that one(plural=‘these or those’).

“Is”—esti—Verb—1) third person singular of “to be.” Strong—third person singular present indicative of eimi; He(she or it) is; also(with neuter plural)--They are.

“Patience/Perseverance/Patient Endurance/Endurance”—upomonh—Noun Fem.—1) Steadfastness, constancy, endurance—1a) in the NT--The characteristic of a man who is not swerved from his deliberate purpose & his loyalty to faith & piety by even the greatest trials & sufferings, 1b) Patiently, & steadfastly; 2) A patient, steadfast waiting for; 3) A patient enduring, sustaining, perseverance. Upomonh is the temper which does not easily succumb under suffering, makroyumia is the self restraint which does not hastily retaliate a wrong. The one[makroyumia] is opposed to cowardice or despondency, the other[upomonh] to wrath & revenge. Strong—Cheerful(or hopeful) endurance, constancy.?From—upo—1) By, under. Strong—a primary preposition; Under, Beneath, or Through; Whither, Underneath, or Below, or At.—&—menw—1) To remain, abide; 2) To wait for, await one. Strong—a primary verb; To stay(in a given place, state, relation or expectancy).

“Saints”—agiov—Adj.—1) Most holy thing, a saint. Agiov has probably as its fundamental meaning separation, i.e., from the world to God's service. If not the original meaning, this at any rate is a meaning early in use. This separation, however, is not chiefly external, it is rather a separation from evil & defilement. The moral signification of the word is therefore the prominent one. This word, rare & of neutral meaning in classical Greek, has been developed in meaning, so that it expresses the full N.T. conception of holiness as no other does. Strong—Sacred(physically, pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially, consecrated).

“Those Who/They That/They Who”(See :7, 11, 12)—o,—OR—feminine--h, —OR—neuter--to—Definite Article—1) This, that, these, etc..

“Keep”—threw—Verb—1) To attend to carefully, take care of—1a) To guard, 1b) metaph.--To keep, one in the state in which he is, 1c) To observe, 1d) To reserve: To undergo something. Threw expresses watchful care & is suggestive of present possession, fulassw indicates safe custody & often implies assault from without; threw may mark the result of which fulassw is the means. Strong—from terov(A watch; perhaps akin to yewrew); To guard (from loss or injury, properly, by keeping the eye upon; & thus differing from fulassw, which is properly to prevent escaping; & from koustwdia, which implies a fortress or full military lines of apparatus), i.e. To note(a prophecy; figuratively--To fulfill a command); by implication--To detain (in custody; figuratively--To maintain); by extension--To withhold(for personal ends; figuratively--To keep unmarried).

“Commandments”—entolh—Noun Fem.—1) An order, command, charge, precept, injunction—1a) That which is prescribed to one by reason of his office; 2) A commandment—2a) A prescribed rule in accordance with which a thing is done—2a1) A precept relating to lineage, of the Mosaic precept concerning the priesthood, 2a2) ethically used--Of the commandments in the Mosaic law or Jewish tradition. Entolh is more specific[than nomov], being used of a particular command. Strong—Injunction, i.e. An authoritative prescription.?From—entellomai—To enjoin.—itself from:—en—1) In, by, with etc..—&—telov—properly--The point aimed at as a limit, i.e. by implication--The conclusion of an act or state(Termination [literally, figuratively or indefinitely], Result[immediate, ultimate or prophetic], Purpose); specifically--An impost or levy(as paid).

“God”(See :4, 5, 7)—yeov—Noun Masc.—1) A god or goddess, a general name of deities or divinities; 2) The Godhead, trinity; 3) Spoken of the only & true God—3a) Refers to the things of God, 3b) His counsels, interests, things due to him; 4) Whatever can in any respect be likened unto God, or resemble him in any way—4a) God's representative or vice-regent—4a1) Of magistrates & judges. Strong—Persuasion, i.e. Credence; moral conviction(of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly--Constancy in such profession; by extension--The system of religious(Gospel) truth itself.

“Jesus”—Ihsouv—Noun Proper Masc.—Jesus = “Jehovah is salvation”—of Hebrew origin [ewvwhy Yeh-ho-shoo'-ah; or evwhy Yeh-ho-shoo'-ah]; Jesus(i.e. Jehoshua), the name of our Lord & two(three) other Israelites.?ewvwhy Yeh-how-shoo'-ah; OR--evwhy Yeh-ho-shoo’-ah—Jehovah-saved; Jehoshua (i.e. Joshua), the Jewish leader.?From—hwhy Yeh-ho-vaw’—(the)Self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God.—&—evy yaw-shah’—a primitive root; properly--To be open, wide or free, i.e. by implication--To be safe; causatively--To free or succor.

Rev. 14:13—“Then I heard a voice from heaven saying to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, & their works follow them.””.....

This is written concerning the time of the future 7 year Tribulation.

However, it is pertinent to today & every day until that future time arrives!

The commitment of God’s people to God’s Anointed One(Christ), is essential to those who find their “rest” in Him!

Ps. 116:15—“Precious in the sight of the LORD Is the death of His godly ones.”

*For Mothers: Your “works” of motherhood “follow” you. Your “works” directly & indirectly effect your children & families!

?What makes your ‘labor’(“works”) laborious?...Your interaction with the world!

“Blessed”—makariov—1)Blessed, happy. Strong—Supremely blest; by extension--Fortunate, well off.?A prolonged form of the poetical--makar(meaning the same).

“Works/Deeds”—ergon—Noun Neuter—1) Business, employment, that which any one is occupied—1a) That which one undertakes to do, enterprise, undertaking; 2) Any product whatever, any thing accomplished by hand, art, industry, or mind; 3) An act, deed, thing done: the idea of working is emphasized in opposition to that which is less than work. Strong—from a primary(but obsolete) ergw(to work); Toil(as an effort or occupation); by implication--An act.

“Follow”(See :4, 9)—akolouyew—Verb—1) To follow one who precedes, join him as his attendant, accompany him; 2) To join one as a disciple, become or be his disciple—2a) Side with his party. Strong—properly--To be in the same way with, i.e. To accompany(specially, as a disciple).?From—A(as a particle of union)—&—keleuyov—A road.

Argumentation:

Heb. 6:10-12—“For God is not unjust to forget your work & labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, & do minister. And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith & patience inherit the promises.”

Ex. 39:42-43—“According to all that the LORD had commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did all the work. Then Moses looked over all the work, & indeed they had done it; as the LORD had commanded, just so they had done it. And Moses blessed them.”

Lev. 18:1-5—“Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, & say to them: ‘I am the LORD your God. According to the doings of the land of Egypt, where you dwelt, you shall not do; & according to the doings of the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you, you shall not do; nor shall you walk in their ordinances. You shall observe My judgments & keep My ordinances, to walk in them: I am the LORD your God. You shall therefore keep My statutes & My judgments, which if a man does, he shall live by them: I am the LORD.”

Lev. 20:7-8—“‘Consecrate yourselves therefore, & be holy, for I am the LORD your God. And you shall keep My statutes, & perform them: I am the LORD who sanctifies you.”

Deut. 31:24-30—“So it was, when Moses had completed writing the words of this law in a book, when they were finished, that Moses commanded the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying: “Take this Book of the Law, & put it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there as a witness against you; for I know your rebellion & your stiff neck. If today, while I am yet alive with you, you have been rebellious against the LORD, then how much more after my death? Gather to me all the elders of your tribes, & your officers, that I may speak these words in their hearing & call heaven & earth to witness against them. For I know that after my death you will become utterly corrupt, & turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; & evil will befall you in the latter days, because you will do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him to anger through the work of your hands.” Then Moses spoke in the hearing of all the assembly of Israel the words of this song until they were ended:”

[that song follows & is a reminder of God’s mighty works]

2Chron. 31:21—“And in every work that he[Hezekiah King of Judah] began in the service of the house of God, in the law & in the commandment, to seek his God, he did it with all his heart. So he prospered.”

Ps. 17:1-4—<<A Prayer of David.>> “Hear a just cause, O LORD, Attend to my cry; Give ear to my prayer which is not from deceitful lips. Let my vindication come from Your presence; Let Your eyes look on the things that are upright. You have tested my heart; You have visited me in the night; You have tried me & have found nothing; I have purposed that my mouth shall not transgress. Concerning the works of men, By the word of Your lips, I have kept away from the paths of the destroyer.”

Ps. 145:10-14—“All Your works shall praise You, O LORD, And Your saints shall bless You. They shall speak of the glory of Your kingdom, And talk of Your power, To make known to the sons of men His mighty acts, And the glorious majesty of His kingdom. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, And Your dominion endures throughout all generations. The LORD upholds all who fall, And raises up all who are bowed down.”

Jer. 25:4-6—“And the LORD has sent to you all His servants the prophets, rising early & sending them, but you have not listened nor inclined your ear to hear. “They said, ‘Repent now everyone of his evil way & his evil doings, & dwell in the land that the LORD has given to you & your fathers forever & ever. Do not go after other gods to serve them & worship them, & do not provoke Me to anger with the works of your hands; & I will not harm you.’”

Mat. 23:1-12—“Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes & to His disciples, saying: “The scribes & the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe & do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, & do not do. For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, & lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad & enlarge the borders of their garments. They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, greetings in the marketplaces, & to be called by men, ‘Rabbi, Rabbi.’ “But you, do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, & you are all brethren. Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ. But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, & he who humbles himself will be exalted.”—Don’t let pride rule the roost!

Jn. 8:38-47—“I speak what I have seen with My Father, & you do what you have seen with your father.” They answered & said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham. But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. You do the deeds of your father.” Then they said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father--God.” Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth & came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. You are of your father the devil, & the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, & does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar & the father of it. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.”

Gal. 5:16-25—“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, & you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, & the Spirit against the flesh; & these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, & the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions & desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

Eph. 2:1-10—“And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses & sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh & of the mind, & were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), & raised us up together, & made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, & that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

Php. 2:12-13—“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear & trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will & to do for His good pleasure.”

2Thess. 3:1-6—“Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly & be glorified, just as it is with you, & that we may be delivered from unreasonable & wicked men; for not all have faith. But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you & guard you from the evil one. And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, both that you do & will do the things we command you. Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God & into the patience of Christ. But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly & not according to the tradition which he received from us.”

1Tim. 5:9-16—“Do not let a widow under sixty years old be taken into the number, & not unless she has been the wife of one man, well reported for good works: if she has brought up children, if she has lodged strangers, if she has washed the saints’ feet, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work. But refuse the younger widows; for when they have begun to grow wanton against Christ, they desire to marry, having condemnation because they have cast off their first faith. And besides they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house, & not only idle but also gossips & busybodies, saying things which they ought not. Therefore I desire that the younger widows marry, bear children, manage the house, give no opportunity to the adversary to speak reproachfully. For some have already turned aside after Satan. If any believing man or woman has widows, let them relieve them, & do not let the church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are really widows.”

Js. 2:14-3:1—“What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked & destitute of daily food, & one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed & filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith, & I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, & I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe--& tremble! But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, & by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, & it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. You see then that a man is justified by works, & not by faith only. Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers & sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.”

Rom. 14:10-12—“But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written: “As I live, says the LORD, Every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall confess to God.” So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.”

2Cor. 5:4-11—“For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body & to be present with the Lord. Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are well known to God, & I also trust are well known in your consciences.”

Heb. 4:9-13—“There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. For the word of God is living & powerful, & sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul & spirit, & of joints & marrow, & is a discerner of the thoughts & intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked & open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”

Mat. 5:16—“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works & glorify your Father in heaven.”

1Tim 2:3-4—“For this is good & acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved & to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

Acts 9:36-39—“At Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which is translated Dorcas. This woman was full of good works & charitable deeds which she did. But it happened in those days that she became sick & died. When they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. And since Lydda was near Joppa, & the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to him, imploring him not to delay in coming to them. Then Peter arose & went with them. When he had come, they brought him to the upper room. And all the widows stood by him weeping, showing the tunics & garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them.”

Eph. 2:10—“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

Titus 2:1-8—“But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things--that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.”

Titus 3:8—“This is a faithful saying, & these things I want you to affirm constantly, that those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works. These things are good & profitable to men.”

Illustration:

*Prov. 31:10-31—“Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies.

The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain.

She does him good & not evil All the days of her life.

She seeks wool & flax, And willingly works with her hands.

She is like the merchant ships, She brings her food from afar.

She also rises while it is yet night, And provides food for her household, And a portion for her maidservants.

She considers a field & buys it; From her profits she plants a vineyard.

She girds herself with strength, And strengthens her arms.

She perceives that her merchandise is good, And her lamp does not go out by night.

She stretches out her hands to the distaff, And her hand holds the spindle.

She extends her hand to the poor, Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy.

She is not afraid of snow for her household, For all her household is clothed with scarlet.

She makes tapestry for herself; Her clothing is fine linen & purple.

Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits among the elders of the land.

She makes linen garments & sells them, And supplies sashes for the merchants.

Strength & honor are her clothing; She shall rejoice in time to come.

She opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue is the law of kindness.

She watches over the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness.

Her children rise up & call her blessed; Her husband also, & he praises her: “Many daughters have done well, But you excel them all.”

Charm is deceitful & beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.

Give her of the fruit of her hands, And let her own works praise her in the gates.”
