TURNING RELIGIOUS RELUCTANCE-XII—John 4:1-42
Turning the Religious Lost
Attention:
Crossing The Road:
There's a man trying to cross the street.
As he steps off the curb a car comes screaming around the corner & heads straight for him. The man walks faster, trying to hurry across the street, but the car changes lanes & is still coming at him.
So the guy turns around to go back, but the car changes lanes again & is still coming at him.
By now, the car is so close & the man so scared that he just freezes & stops in the middle of the road.
The car gets real close, then swerves at the last possible moment & screeches to a halt right next to him.
The driver rolls down the window.
The driver is a squirrel.
The squirrel says to the man, “See, it's not as easy as it looks, is it?”
Think Twice Before Continuing down your current path!
The Church exists to turn the world away from it’s errant way!
Everybody lives by a ‘religion’—a set of spiritual & secular values that they hold to. These may be right or wrong.
Everybody has a belief system to which they subscribe—right or wrong.
Even atheists live by their atheism! Thus they are a religious people too.
All of these may be ‘reluctant’ to turn, But by the power of God, they are turnable nonetheless!
*We are all called as God’s witnesses to turn those who are headed for disaster...“Go therefore & make disciples of ALL the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father & of the Son & of the Holy Spirit, teaching THEM to observe all things that I have commanded you; & lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.”!(Matthew 28:19-20)...
Jesus divulged/bore witness of/ His Messianic identity to a reluctant/hesitant but religious woman.
God’s people bear witness of Messiah’s/Jesus’ identity to reluctant religious people.
How/When will God’s people turn the reluctancy of the religious?
OR--What will turn that religious reluctancy around?
Some insights toward turning religious reluctance to God.
Previously as we looked in these verses we found that,

Explanation:(:31-34)Shallow/Errant/Limiting/True Nourishment
:31—“In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”
:32—“But He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.”
:33—“Therefore the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?”
:34—“Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, & to finish His work.””
:31—“In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”
“In the meantime”—describes the “time” Jesus had available since the woman had left the well & their conversation, & had returned to the city of Sychar to invite the men of that city to evaluate Jesus as the Messiah/Christ.
Evidently Jesus was known to be so engrossed in His work/mission that He would potentially miss meals.
Therefore His disciples & others of their entourage(most probably the women(Mk. 15:40-41; Lk. 8:2-3)) would supply His physical needs. Others were needed in order to free Jesus from any burdens/concerns other than His preaching, teaching, & healing ministries.
Mark 15:40-41—“There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less & of Joses, & Salome, who also followed Him & ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, & many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.”
Lk. 8:1-3—“Now it came to pass, afterward, that He went through every city & village, preaching & bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him, & certain women who had been healed of evil spirits & infirmities--Mary called Magdalene, out of whom had come seven demons, & Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, & Susanna, & many others who provided for Him from their substance.”
Jesus’ disciples having taken that duty upon themselves, returned from the city with “food” in hand(:8, 27) & entreated(“urged”) their “rabbi”/honored teacher to “eat.”
“Meantime/Meanwhile”—metaxu—Verb—1) Between—1a) Meanwhile, in the mean time; 2) After, afterwards. :33—“Therefore the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?”
The “disciples” were unaware of & oblivious to Jesus’ meaning regarding the food that He had acquired apart from their own purchases(:32).
They were focused upon immediate physical wants(physical hunger) rather than the spiritual hunger that was being met(:10, 14, 21-26) & had potential to be met(:35, 39-43).
The disciples were completely unaware of the existence of such “food.” So they ‘naturally’ assumed that unbeknownst to them, someone had brought Jesus “food”.
They were ‘probably’ somewhat upset at having had to walk all the way into Sychar to buy the “food”, since someone else(particularly others of the disciples) had evidently already brought the needed food to Jesus before they did.
?Why were they unaware of or oblivious of the “food” they could not see?
“Therefore”(See :1, 6; :30—“Then”)—oun—Particle—1) Then, therefore, accordingly, consequently, these things being so. Strong—apparently a primary word; adverbially--Certainly, or conjunctionally--Accordingly.

“One Another”—allhlwn—Pronoun Plural Reciprocal—1) One another, reciprocally, mutually. Strong—Genitive[?] plural from allov[a primary word; "else," i.e. different(in many applications)] reduplicated; One another.

:34—“Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, & to finish His work.””
However they were unaware of the greater mission of witnessing God’s love for mankind, rather than the mission of fulfilling a physical/bodily want/need.
The disciples rightly saw a physical need which they should & could meet. However they missed the significance of the spiritual need!
?Is it possible that we—individuals & the church as a whole—can become so consumed by personal desire(what I want or my closest friends want), that we become oblivious to & displace the real/actual spiritual need of the ministry & moment?
Easing one’s physical hunger is abated or set aside(albeit temporarily) thru one’s spiritual infilling(“My food”).
Obedience to the Holy Spirit calls us to choose God’s will over our own. And God will not call us to literally starve(to death), unless there is a uniquely or an unusually pressing determinative purpose of His(cf.-Rev. 12:11; Heb. 12:3-4).
Heb. 12:3-4—“For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary & discouraged in your souls. You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin.”
Jesus’ calling, & thus His desire, & that to which He put forth His every effort, was to accomplish(“do”) God’s will in Himself. His calling & desire was to fully(“finish”) accomplish God’s “work.”
To do God’s work only partially, is to not do God’s work at all!
Remember king Saul!.....
1Sam. 15:1-22—“Samuel also said to Saul, “The LORD sent me to anoint you king over His people, over Israel. Now therefore, heed the voice of the words of the LORD. Thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, how he ambushed him on the way when he came up from Egypt. ‘Now go & attack Amalek, & utterly destroy all that they have, & do not spare them. But kill both man & woman, infant & nursing child, ox & sheep, camel & donkey.’” So Saul gathered the people together & numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand foot soldiers & ten thousand men of Judah. And Saul came to a city of Amalek, & lay in wait in the valley. Then Saul said to the Kenites, “Go, depart, get down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them. For you showed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. And Saul attacked the Amalekites, from Havilah all the way to Shur, which is east of Egypt. He also took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, & utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. But Saul & the people spared Agag & the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, & all that was good[i.e., in their own eyes], & were unwilling to utterly destroy them. But everything despised & worthless[i.e., in their own eyes], that they utterly destroyed. Now the word of the LORD came ...to Samuel, saying, “I greatly regret that I have set up Saul as king, for he has turned back from following Me, & has not performed My commandments.” And it grieved Samuel, & he cried out to the LORD all night. So when Samuel rose early in the morning to meet Saul, it was told Samuel, saying, “Saul went to Carmel, & indeed, he set up a monument for himself; & he has gone on around, passed by, & gone down to Gilgal.” Then Samuel went to Saul, & Saul said to him, “Blessed are you of the LORD! I have performed the commandment of the LORD.” But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears, & the lowing of the oxen which I hear?” And Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep & the oxen, to sacrifice to the LORD your God; & the rest we have utterly destroyed.” Then Samuel said to Saul, “Be quiet! And I will tell you what the LORD said to me last night.” And he said to him, “Speak on.” So Samuel said, “When you were little in your own eyes, were you not head of the tribes of Israel? And did not the LORD anoint you king over Israel? Now the LORD sent you on a mission, & said, ‘Go, & utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, & fight against them until they are consumed.’ “Why then did you not obey the voice of the LORD? Why did you swoop down on the spoil, & do evil in the sight of the LORD?” And Saul said to Samuel, “But I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, & gone on the mission on which the LORD sent me, & brought back Agag king of Amalek; I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. But the people took of the plunder, sheep & oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the LORD your God in Gilgal.” Then Samuel said: “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings & sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams.”
Why are you part of this particular body of believers? My hope for you is that every reason you might have, is only secondary to your love for your Lord Jesus!

These words are often used interchangeably. Strong—apparently a prolonged form of an obsolete primary; To make or do(in a very wide application, more or less direct).

Argumentation:
Mat. 21:28-31—“But what do you think? A man had two sons, & he came to the first & said, ‘Son, go, work today in my vineyard.’ “He answered & said, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he regretted it & went. Then he came to the second & said likewise. And he answered & said, ‘I go, sir,’ but he did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said to Him, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that tax collectors & harlots enter the kingdom of God before you.”
Rev. 12:10-11—“Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, & strength, & the kingdom of our God, & the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day & night, has been cast down. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb & by the word of their testimony, & they did not love their lives to the death.”
Eph. 5:18-21—“And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms & hymns & spiritual songs, singing & making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God.”
Heb. 11:35-40—“Women received their dead raised to life again. And others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. Still others had trial of mockings & scourgings, yes, & of chains & imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins & goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented-- of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts & mountains, in dens & caves of the earth. And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.”
*Lk. 14:26-30—“If anyone comes to Me & does not hate his father & mother, wife & children, brothers & sisters, yes, & his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. And whoever does not bear his cross & come after Me cannot be My disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first & count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it--lest, after he has laid the foundation, & is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build & was not able to finish.’”
Mat. 23:23—“Woe to you, scribes & Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint & anise & cummin, & have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice & mercy & faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.”
Lk. 11:42—“But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint & rue & all manner of herbs, & pass by justice & the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.”
