Summary: Authority of the Word

“For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled” (Matthew 5:18).

A. INTRODUCTION

1. Many reject the Bible because they are:

a. Ignorant of scripture.

b. A Christian with a poor testimony.

c. False teaching from a cult or world religion.

d. False teaching from science or education,

e. Spiritual blindness.

“The Good News is hidden behind a veil, it is hidden . . . satan . . . has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe” (2 Cor. 4:3-4, NLT).

2. The Bible doesn’t try to prove God is speaking, just as light doesn’t try to prove it is shining and illuminating. It assumes.

3. Some critics say the Bible is inspired about God and doctrine, but has errors in geography, history, science, etc.

4. Some teach that God inspired errors in the Bible to identify with fallible people.

5. Some teach God included “mistakes” to accommodate the wrong teaching or beliefs of that day.

6. Some teach God never intended to inspire all scripture, just some of it.

B. THE BIBLE IS AN AUTHORITY AND INERRANT

1. “Inerrancy states what is inspired is also authoritative.” ~James Montgomery Boice

2. God inspired all the Bible. “All scripture is given by inspiration” (2 Tim. 3:16).

3. God and man produced the Bible. “Holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21).

4. Bible quotations give both God and humans as the source. “God speaking through David” (Acts 4:24-25).

5. Peter’s writing calls Paul’s epistles scripture (2 Peter 3:15-16).

6. Jesus quoted scripture as His authority. “It is written” (Matt. 4:1-11).

7. Jesus believed scripture was accurate down to words and letters. “Not one jot or tittle” (Matthew 5:18).

8. Jesus said scripture can’t be altered. “The scripture cannot be altered” (John 10:35, NLT).

9. Jesus used verb tense to demonstrate truth. “I am the God of thy fathers” (Ex. 3:6, Matthew 22:23-33, NLT).

10. Apostle (John) used the Old Testament as an authority. “That God gave His Son” (1 John 5:10).

11. Apostles claimed, “The Holy Spirit . . . shall teach you all things and bring all things to your memory that I said to you” (John 14:26), as they preached. (Acts 2:4, 4:3, 31, 13:9, Gal. 1:1, 1:12, 1 Thess. 2:13, 4:28, Rev. 21:5, 22:6, 18-19).

C. THE ARGUMENT FROM THE NATURE OF GOD AND TRUTH

1. It is impossible for a perfect God to write an imperfect book.

2. It is impossible for God to put His name on the Bible that contains errors or lie to people (Titus 1:2, 6:18).

3. The Bible is truth. “Thy word is truth” (John 17:17, NKJV). Truth is that which is consistent and reflects life as it is.

4. Science and the Bible. No proven fact of science creates an unexplainable problem about any view. “Sun raising” (Ecc. 1:5). “Dew falling” (Num. 11:9).

5. History and the Bible. No conflict between Bible and documents of antiquity.

6. Archeology and the Bible. Every spade of dirt demonstrates the truth of the Bible.

7. Prophecy and the Bible. The Bible 40% prophetic when writing, yet fulfillment demonstrated truthfulness and honesty.

8. Greatest proof in your transformed life. “You are our epistles . . . known and real of all people” (2 Cor. 3:2, NKJV).

If you have never really accepted Jesus as your personal Savior, would you do it right now? Do not delay or put it off. If you would like to receive Christ by faith, pray this simple prayer in your heart:

Dear Lord, I acknowledge that I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died for my sins on the cross, and rose again the third day. I repent of my sins. By faith I receive the Lord Jesus as my Savior. You promised to save me, and I believe You, because You are God and cannot lie. I believe right now that the Lord Jesus is my personal Savior, and that all my sins are forgiven through His precious blood. I thank You, dear Lord, for saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

If you prayed that prayer, God heard you and saved you. I personally want to welcome you to the family of God and rejoice with you.
