What Must I Do?
Mark 10: 17 – 31
Intro: A wealthy 80-year-old had married a beautiful 28-year-old woman. He often wondered if she had married him for his money. One night as they sat before the fireplace in the rather elaborate home, the husband asked is wife, “If I lost all my money, would you still love me.” Without hesitation his wife answered, “Why yes, darlin’ and I would really miss you, too!
I VS. 17 – “As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
A The man was swept to Jesus on a tide of overflowing emotion.
B Jesus encourage the mad to stop and think calmly about what he was saying and doing.
C You cannot inherit the kingdom of God with sentimental passion for Jesus alone.
II VSS 19 & 20 Jesus summarizes the some of the 10 commandments.
A Popular Jewish thought was that prosperity = God’s favor and excellence of character.
B Respectability is not enough. Salvation is not achieved by something you do; it is a gift from God.
C We are all judged by society by 2 things: how we get our $ and how we spend it.
III VS. 21 – Jesus looked (looked intently into his eyes) at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” Jesus said.
A The man is obviously dissatisfied with life, reaching out for something more.
B What do you lack?
C GO, SELL, GIVE, COME, FOLLOW. These words can be summarized by one word: SURRENDER.
Concl: What do lack that keeps you from surrendering to the call of Christ Jesus? Like the man in this lesson, many lack one thing: COURAGE.
VS. 22 – “At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.”
You may not have great wealth; but, still you may lack the courage to surrender completely to the will of God in your life.
