FREEDOM(:18-19)

Explanation: (:18-19)Live differently—How do we live Freely?

:18—“So Noah went out, & his sons & his wife & his sons’ wives with him.”

:19—“Every animal, every creeping thing, every bird, & whatever creeps on the earth, according to their families, went out of the ark.”

It was also(cf.-:17:7-8) Noah’s responsibility to see that the animals were “brought out” from the ark. Noah was to bring the animals out “with” himself & his family. Every kind of animal was as important to God’s plan as was the kind of humanity represented thru Noah.

Noah was to bring all out from the safety of the ark into the safety & broad openness of the newly cleansed earth. The animals were again intended to “abound” upon the earth(1:22). This they were to do by fulfilling their God-ordained directive to be “fruitful & multiply.”

Thus Noah exited the ark with “his sons, his wife & his sons’ wives.”

The word translated “went out” describes Noah & his family’s exit in the imperfect tense, whereas the exit of the animals is described using the perfect tense(:19).

?What is the significance of this difference of tense?...

This probably signifies that Noah & his family lingered for some time at or in the area of the ark...possibly to dismantle the ark for it’s finished wood timbers, beams, etc. Perhaps they lingered in order to ensure the exit of the animals? We are not told.

Also the animals of all the “families” present, exited the ark. “Families” had been produced among the animals during their time(365 days) on the ark. They were mere individuals when entering the ark but now they are considered families.

Now all(particularly men) are Free to live apart from their former world that was outside of God’s will(cf.-6:5-7). All the inhabitants of the ark were at that time, in a limited sense, potentially free from sin’s influence!

*But HOW are they to live Freely?

“Went out”(See :19—“bring out”)—auy yaw-tsaw’—Qal Imperfect—1) To go out, come out, exit, go forth—1a) (Qal)--1a1) To go or come out or forth, depart, 1a2) To go forth(to a place), 1a3) To go forward, proceed to(to or toward something), 1a4) To come or go forth(with purpose or for result), 1a5) To come out of. Strong—a primitive root; To go(causatively--Bring) out, in a great variety of applications, literally & figuratively, direct & proximally.

“Families”—hxpvm mish-paw-khaw'—1) Clan, family. Strong—A family, i.e. Circle of relatives; figuratively--A class (of persons), a species (of animals) or sort (of things); by extens.--A tribe or people.

“Went out”(See :18—“bring out”)—auy yaw-tsaw’—Qal Perfect—

Argumentation:

*HOW are WE to live Freely?

Having been set free in Christ!

Jn. 8:31-36—“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, & the truth shall make you free.” They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, & have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will be made free’?” Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

Rom. 6:13-23—“And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, & your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, & of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now having been set free from sin, & having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, & the end, everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Rom. 8:1-2—“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin & death.”

Gal. 4:31; 5:1, 13—“So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman but of the free. Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, & do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”.....“For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”

1Pet. 2:15-16—“For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men-- as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God.”

1Cor. 9:19-23—“For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win the more; & to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might win those who are under the law; to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; to the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. Now this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I may be partaker of it with you.”

Heb. 2:14-15—“Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh & blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, & release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”

Lk. 4:17-21—“And He[Jesus] was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.” Then He closed the book, & gave it back to the attendant & sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.””

Freedom from sin is particularly seen in the opposing pictures of the ‘Old Man’(lost/carnal) & ‘New Man’(saved/spiritual).

*Rom. 6:5-7—“For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin.”

Eph. 4:21-24—“if indeed you have heard Him & have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, & be renewed in the spirit of your mind, & that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness & holiness.”

Col. 3:8-11—“But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, & have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all & in all.”

The Hicks family of western Australia, wanted their cat, Howie, to be lovingly cared for while they went on an extended vacation overseas. They had to travel over 1000 miles to get to the airport, so they dropped him off with relatives who lived there. Months later, when they returned to retrieve Howie, they were told that he had run away. Howie being an indoor cat, the family assumed he wouldn't have the survival skills to make it on his own. A year later, their daughter returned home from school one day & saw a mangy, unkempt, & starving cat—Yep, it was Howie! It had taken him 12 months to cross 1,000 miles of Australian outback, but Howie had come home/Acceptance of salvation is manifested in FREEDOM
