REMOVING The WALL-III—Joshua 6:1-16+:20
Removing Barriers
Barriers To Progress:
Attention:
Frustrated Pastor:
The new pastor decided to visit the children's Sunday school. The teacher introduced him & said, "Pastor, this morning we're studying Joshua."
"That's wonderful," said the new pastor, "let's see what you're learning. Who tore down the walls of Jericho?"
Little Billy shyly raised hand & offered, "Pastor, I didn't do it."
Taken aback, the pastor asked, "Come on, now, who tore down the walls of Jericho?"
The teacher, interrupting, said, "Pastor, Billy's a good boy. If he says he didn't do it, I believe he didn't do it."
Flustered, the pastor went to the Sunday School Director & related the story to him.
The director, looking worried, explained, "Well, sir, we've had some problems with Billy before. Let me talk to him & see what we can do."
Really bothered now by the answers of the teacher & the director, the new pastor approached the deacons & related the whole story, including the responses of the teacher & the director.
A white-haired gentleman thoughtfully stroked his chin & said, "Well, Pastor, I move we just take the money from the general fund to pay for the walls & leave it at that.”
We do well when our path is unhindered/clear/certain.
God enabled the children of Israel to conquer the walled city of Jericho.
God removes the barriers to ministry/serving Him.
God seeks to ensure the success of ministry.
How can barriers to ministry/serving God be removed?
We have already found that Ministry barriers vanish when...
1. GOD’s POWER DOMINATES(The ENEMY & The FAMILY)(:1-2)
2. GOD ALONE INTIMATES(:3-5)
3—Ministry barriers vanish when...
GOD ALONE INTIMIDATES(:6-9)
Explanation:(:6-9)
:8—“So it was, when Joshua had spoken to the people, that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the LORD advanced & blew the trumpets, & the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them.”
Upon Joshua’s command, the 7 “priests” as designated(:4, 6) went forth blowing the “trumpets”(:13-14) with the “ark” following.
The priests led the way for the “ark” which “followed.”

The armed men went before the 7 priests, & the rear guard fell in behind the ark. The 7 priest continued to blow the horns.
The “ark” & priestly representation were intentionally sandwiched between the throng of “armed men.”
“Ark”—Given prominence—Which God commissioned

Argumentation:
*Php. 1:21-30—“For to me, to live is Christ, & to die is gain. But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. For I am hard pressed between the two, having a desire to depart & be with Christ, which is far better. Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you. And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain & continue with you all for your progress & joy of faith, that your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ by my coming to you again. Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come & see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel, & not in any way terrified by your adversaries, which is to them a proof of perdition, but to you of salvation, & that from God. For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, having the same conflict which you saw in me & now hear is in me.”
*1Pet. 3:8-17—“Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. For “He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit. Let him turn away from evil & do good; Let him seek peace & pursue it. For the eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their prayers; But the face of the LORD is against those who do evil.” And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.” But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, & always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness & fear; having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.”
1Peter 4:12-19—“Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory & of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter. For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; & if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? Now “If the righteous one is scarcely saved, Where will the ungodly & the sinner appear?” Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator.”
*Mat. 10:16-20—“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents & harmless as doves. But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils & scourge you in their synagogues. You will be brought before governors & kings for My sake, as a testimony to them & to the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.”
*Mat. 10:34—[Jesus warned of the other side of the coin of God’s compassion]—“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.”
Mk. 8:34-38—“When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, & take up his cross, & follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake & the gospel’s will save it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, & loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of Me & My words in this adulterous & sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
Jn. 12:25, 26—“He who loves his life will lose it, & he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; & where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.”
*Isa. 41:10-20—“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ “Behold, all those who were incensed against you Shall be ashamed & disgraced; They shall be as nothing, And those who strive with you shall perish. You shall seek them & not find them-- Those who contended with you. Those who war against you Shall be as nothing, As a nonexistent thing. For I, the LORD your God, will hold your right hand, Saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you.’ “Fear not, you worm Jacob, You men of Israel! I will help you,” says the LORD And your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. Behold, I will make you into a new threshing sledge with sharp teeth; You shall thresh the mountains & beat them small, And make the hills like chaff. You shall winnow them, the wind shall carry them away, And the whirlwind shall scatter them; You shall rejoice in the LORD, And glory in the Holy One of Israel. The poor & needy seek water, but there is none, Their tongues fail for thirst. I, the LORD, will hear them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them. I will open rivers in desolate heights, And fountains in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water, And the dry land springs of water. I will plant in the wilderness the cedar & the acacia tree, The myrtle & the oil tree; I will set in the desert the cypress tree & the pine And the box tree together, That they may see & know, And consider & understand together, That the hand of the LORD has done this, And the Holy One of Israel has created it.”
1Jn. 5:14-15—“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.”
Mat. 10:28—“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul & body in hell.”
*Isa. 8:13-20—“The LORD of hosts, Him you shall hallow; Let Him be your fear, And let Him be your dread. He will be as a sanctuary, But a stone of stumbling & a rock of offense To both the houses of Israel, As a trap & a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And many among them shall stumble; They shall fall & be broken, Be snared & taken.” Bind up the testimony, Seal the law among my disciples. And I will wait on the LORD, Who hides His face from the house of Jacob; And I will hope in Him. Here am I & the children whom the LORD has given me! We are for signs & wonders in Israel From the LORD of hosts, Who dwells in Mount Zion. And when they say to you, “Seek those who are mediums & wizards, who whisper & mutter,” should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living? To the law & to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”
*Acts 20:22-24—“And see, now I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains & tribulations await me. But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, & the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.”
*Rom. 8:31-39—“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, & furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

SILENCE REIGNS(:10-15)
Explanation:(:10-15)Silent Before Him/Attentive/Obedient
:10—“Now Joshua had commanded the people, saying, “You shall not shout or make any noise with your voice, nor shall a word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I say to you, ‘Shout!’ Then you shall shout.””
Joshua had "commanded all the people(?those involved in the parade/demonstration, priests & men of war?) prior to their beginning the encircling of Jericho, that none of them were to “shout” or even allow their voices to be heard
NASB=“nor let your voice be heard.” They were not even to let a single word fall from their lips during the march.
They all knew that at a specific time—a particular day—they would be given instruction to “shout.” Until the arrival of that time, they were to remain silent.
All three of the uses of “shout” here are in the Hiphil tense which is causative. The implication is that the people were responsible for containing themselves, not allowing anything to ‘cause’ them to overstep God’s direction thru Joshua.
However, they were instructed(caused) to “shout” only at a specific occasion & time.
The focus of their silence would be upon God’s presence & Israel’s faithfulness(c.f.-:16, 20) to their God, YaHWeH.

Argumentation:
Proverbs 17:28—“Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive.”
Ps. 46:10—“Be still, & know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
The word “Selah”—is a Hebrew musical term used in the Psalms—It signifies a ‘rest’ or ‘time of contemplation.’ Spiritually it is a time to ‘Think on these things.’
Lk. 10:38-42—“Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
Ex. 14:5-14—“Now it was told the king of Egypt that the people had fled, & the heart of Pharaoh & his servants was turned against the people; & they said, “Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us?” So he made ready his chariot & took his people with him. Also, he took six hundred choice chariots, & all the chariots of Egypt with captains over every one of them. And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, & he pursued the children of Israel; & the children of Israel went out with boldness. So the Egyptians pursued them, all the horses & chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen & his army, & overtook them camping by the sea beside Pi Hahiroth, before Baal Zephon. And when Pharaoh drew near, the children of Israel lifted their eyes, & behold, the Egyptians marched after them. So they were very afraid, & the children of Israel cried out to the LORD. Then they said to Moses, “Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you so dealt with us, to bring us up out of Egypt? “Is this not the word that we told you in Egypt, saying, ‘Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians?’ For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the wilderness.” And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, & see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. The LORD will fight for you, & you shall hold your peace.”
Hab. 2:20—“But the LORD is in His holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before Him.”
Ps. 100:3—“Know that the LORD Himself is God; It is He who has made us, & not we ourselves; We are His people & the sheep of His pasture.”
Js. 1:19-20—“So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”
