Do you know what Nineveh Knew
Jonah 3:5
1. Notice the Significance of the message vs 5
whole country repented Anchorage Alaska 1697 sq miles, Jacksonville
Fla. 757.7, Oklahoma City 607, Houston 579.4
Ninevah 60 miles across, 3600 sq miles. 120,000 children
Acts 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now
commandeth all men every where to repent: 31 Because he hath
appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in
righteousness by [that] man whom he hath ordained; [whereof]
he hath given assurance unto all [men], in that he hath raised
him from the dead.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our
sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
2. Notice the Sovereignty of the message vs 5
Ps 97:1 The LORD reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of
isles be glad [thereof].
they believed God
Jonah 1:2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for
their wickedness is come up before me.
Is 55:8 For my thoughts [are] not your thoughts, neither [are] your
ways my ways, saith the LORD. 9 For [as] the heavens are
higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways,
and my thoughts than your thoughts. 10 For as the rain cometh
down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but
watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may
give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: 11 So shall my
word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto
me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall
prosper [in the thing] whereto I sent it.
3. Notice the Simplicity of the message vs 4
Luke 18:16 But Jesus called them [unto him], and said, Suffer little
children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of
such is the kingdom of God. 17 Verily I say unto you,
Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a
little child shall in no wise enter therein.
2Cor 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve
through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from
the simplicity that is in Christ.
James the Son of Zebedee, was a fisherman by trade when Jesus Called him to a
lifetime of ministry. As a strong leader of the church, James was beheaded at
Jerusalem. The Roman officer who guarded James watched amazed as James
defended his faith at his trial. Later, the officer Walked beside James to the place
of execution. Overcome by conviction, he declared his new faith to the judge
and Knelt beside James to accept beheading as a Christian.
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson went on a camping trip. After sharing a good meal and a bottle of Petrie wine, they retire to their tent for the night.
At about 3 AM, Holmes nudges Watson and asks, "Watson, look up into the sky and tell me what you see?"
Watson said, "I see millions of stars."
Holmes asks, "And, what does that tell you?"
Watson replies, "Astronomically, it tells me there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Theologically, it tells me that God is great and we are small and insignificant. Horologically, it tells me that it’s about 3 AM. Meteorologically, it tells me that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you, Holmes?"
Holmes retorts, "Someone stole our tent.”
Charles Spurgeon, the 19th century evangelist, writes this about the sovereignty of God: "There is no attribute more comforting to his children than that of God's sovereignty. Under the most adverse circumstances, in the most severe trials, they believe that sovereignty has ordained their afflictions, that sovereignty overrules them, and that sovereignty will sanctify them all. There is nothing for which the children ought to more earnestly contend to than the doctrine of their Master over all creation--the Kingship of God over all the works of his own hands--the throne of God and His right to sit upon that throne...for it is God upon the throne whom we trust."
A mother was putting her little four-year-old daughter to bed for the night. The child was afraid of the dark, and the mother, on this particular occasion, with her husband away, was fearful also.
When the light was out, the child caught a glimpse of the moon outside the window. “Mommy,” she asked, “is the moon God’s light?”
“Yes,” the mother said.
Then the child asked, “Will God put out his light and go to sleep?”
The mother replied, “No, dear, God never goes to sleep.”
Then, out of the simplicity of a child’s faith, the little girl said something which gave reassurance even to her mother: “Well, as long as God is awake, there is no sense both of us staying awake.” And off to sleep she went.
I am amazed by what people will believe. I read this recently, the following headlines were observed:

An angel appeared at a faculty meeting and told the dean that in return for his unselfish service, he will be rewarded with his choice of wealth, wisdom, or beauty. Without hesitating, the dean selects wisdom. "It is done!" the angel said, and then disappeared into a cloud of smoke. All of the other members of the faculty stared at the dean with amazement. Finally one of them whispered, "Now that you have infinite wisdom, Dean, say something." The dean looked them and said, "I should have taken the money."
