REMOVING The WALL-II—Joshua 6:1-16+:20

Removing Barriers

Attention:

We usually avoid the beach except morning & evenings because of the sun.

However, we also may go to the beach at midday. In order to remove the barrier of midday beaching(the effects of the brutal midday sun) we may use sunblock...But my preference is clothing—shirt, hat, sunglasses.

We also have a ‘sun tent’ for shade. We can sit inside of the tent to block the sun. So we rarely use sunblock!

In doing so, any barriers to our beach enjoyment vanish(are removed)!

We suffer when our way/path is hindered/unclear/uncertain.

On the other hand, We do well when our path is unhindered/clear/certain.

God enabled the children of Israel to conquer the walled city of Jericho.

God removes the barriers to ministry/serving Him.

God seeks to ensure the success of ministry.

How can barriers to ministry/serving God be removed?

We found previously that

Ministry barriers vanish when...

1. GOD’s POWER DOMINATES(The ENEMY & The FAMILY)(:1-2)

Today we’ll find that...

2—Ministry barriers vanish when...

GOD ALONE INTIMATES(:3-5)

Explanation:(:3-5)Decides/Appoints/Parades/Designs

:3—“You shall march around the city, all you men of war; you shall go all around the city once. This you shall do six days.”

In order to secure this victory, Joshua was given a specific means in which to do it. To have a potential miracle described, ensures the means is given also.

God is the provider of miracles. In order to properly glorify Himself a miracle is met on God’s terms.

Joshua was instructed by God to have the men of war march completely around the city one time. Literally the Hebrew reads, ‘once, one time.’ They were to repeat this ‘one time’ encirclement every day “for six days.”

Besides the presence of the men of war, the priests were to carry 7 trumpets of rams’ horns(shofar) & blow them continuously(:13). The priests were to do this while marching before the ark(of the covenant).

On the 7th day they were to encircle the city(in the same fashion) 7 times rather than once, as was to be accomplished on the previous six days.

After the seventh time on the seventh day, the priests were to “blow the trumpets.”

“It is probable that the horns of this animal were used at first; & that afterwards, when metallic trumpets were introduced, the primitive name, as well as form of them, was traditionally continued.”

“The design of this whole proceeding was obviously to impress the Canaanites with a sense of the divine omnipotence, to teach the Israelites a memorable lesson of faith & confidence in God's promises, & to inspire sentiments of respect & reverence for the ark as the symbol of His presence.”

“The length of time during which those circuits were made tended the more intensely to arrest the attention, & to deepen the impressions, both of the Israelites & the enemy. The priests are instructed to “make a long blast” at the end of the seventh circuit of the seventh day. This was a signal which was different from the continual blowing which characterized the other marches.

This was a distinguishing “blast” in that it was to be a call to the people to “shout.”

God promised & Joshua believed(:6ff.) that upon the people’s “shout”, that “the wall” of Jericho would “fall down.” It would not only “fall down” but would “fall down flat.”

Gen. 6:13-22; 7:7-9—“And God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; & behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, & cover it inside & outside with pitch. And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, & its height thirty cubits. You shall make a window for the ark, & you shall finish it to a cubit from above; & set the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, & third decks. And behold, I Myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall die. But I will establish My covenant with you; & you shall go into the ark--you, your sons, your wife, & your sons’ wives with you. And of every living thing of all flesh you shall bring two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male & female. Of the birds after their kind, of animals after their kind, & of every creeping thing of the earth after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive. And you shall take for yourself of all food that is eaten, & you shall gather it to yourself; & it shall be food for you & for them.” Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.”.....“So Noah, with his sons, his wife, & his sons’ wives, went into the ark because of the waters of the flood. Of clean animals, of animals that are unclean, of birds, & of everything that creeps on the earth, two by two they went into the ark to Noah, male & female, as God had commanded Noah.”

Ex. 12:12—“‘For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, & will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man & beast; & against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.”

Ex. 8:18, 19—“Now the magicians so worked with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not. So there were lice on man & beast. Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, & he did not heed them, just as the LORD had said.”

Ex. 9:11—“And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils were on the magicians & on all the Egyptians.”

Ex. 9:13-14—“Then the LORD said to Moses, “Rise early in the morning & stand before Pharaoh, & say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD God of the Hebrews: “Let My people go, that they may serve Me, for at this time I will send all My plagues to your very heart, & on your servants & on your people, that you may know that there is none like Me in all the earth.”

1Pet. 4:12-13—“Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.”

2Pet. 3:1-13—“Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, & of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord & Savior, knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, & saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, & the earth standing out of water & in the water, by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. But the heavens & the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment & perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, & a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, & the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth & the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct & godliness, looking for & hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, & the elements will melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens & a new earth in which righteousness dwells.”

Jn. 3:3, 5-7—“Jesus answered & said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”.....“Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water & the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, & that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. “Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’”

Lk. 22:15-23—“Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; “for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” Then He took the cup, & gave thanks, & said, “Take this & divide it among yourselves; “for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” And He took bread, gave thanks & broke it, & gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table. And truly the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!” Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.”

We may ‘reason’ as to how God will work, come up with a preconceived plan, & thereby MISS God’s blessing...because God Intimates a way that is NOT according to the way we supposed He would work. We then ironically work against God because we won’t accept the change which is outside our reasonings. We blame & accuse & become bitter.

Jn. 14:15-18—““If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, & He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever--“the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you & will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.”

Rom. 12:1-2—“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good & acceptable & perfect will of God.”

My sermon notes/I take them into the pulpit(to the chagrin of my preaching professor!)/They are reminders to me of what the Holy Spirit has revealed to me thruout the previous week/I must give the Spirit something to work with today!/GOD ALONE INTIMATES

A Teleprompter/People used to give Barak Obama fits because he used a teleprompter/If you approve what is on the teleprompter, then what is wrong with using it?/It faithfully relates what has been agreed to/If you yourself put the thoughts on a teleprompter & the teleprompter remids you of your mission...of what you want to declare, then it is a tool useful to you & a tool useful in the Master’s hands!/GOD ALONE INTIMATES
