The story is told of two non-Christian men who, in order to pick blackberries, braved a pasture containing a notorious bull. The blackberry patch was located in the center of the pasture & a good distance from any quick exit that might be needed. They were picking away when the bull spotted them. He became enraged, lowered his head, & began pawing up the grass & dirt with his hooves getting ready to charge the blackberry pickers.

The men heard the huffing of the angry bulls nostrils & instantly the men darted toward the nearest fence. The storming bull followed in hot pursuit, & it was soon apparent they wouldn’t make it. They could feel the ground shaking underneath them from the pounding hooves of the enormous bull!

Terrified, the one shouted to the other, “Put up a prayer, John. We’re in for it!”

John answered, “I can’t. I’ve never made a public prayer in my life.”

“But your daddy was a preacher – surely he taught you some sort of prayer! So pray John, pray! The bull is catching up to us.”

“All right,” panted John, "I’ll say the only prayer I know, the one Daddy used to repeat at the table: ‘O Lord, make us truly thankful for what we are about to receive!’”

Those guys never realized/received their salvation!

But...God’s people do!

Safe passage was realized/experienced/fulfilled for all on the ark.

:6—“So it came to pass, at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made.”

After forty days after the ark’s having settled on the mountaintop in Ararat, Noah opened the “window,”(Nwlx) of the ark which he had built.

It is interesting to note that Noah was told to make a “window” of a seemingly different character in 6:16(rhu). However, these ‘may be’ merely expressing different aspects of the opening.

Gen. 6:16—“You shall make a window[rhu] for the ark, & you shall finish it to a cubit from above; & set the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, & third decks.”

“Window”—rhu tso’-har—Noun Masc.—1) Noon, midday—1a) Noon (as specific time of day), 1b) Noon(in simile as bright of happiness, blessing). OR--Noun Fem.—2) Roof—2a) meaning dubious. Strong—A light(i.e. window): Dual double light, i.e. Noon. Used 24X.?From—rhu tsaw-har'—Verb—To glisten; To press out oil.

:7—“Then he sent out a raven, which kept going to & fro until the waters had dried up from the earth.”

Noah sent a “raven” which permanently stayed out of the ark as it “kept going to & fro” without returning to Noah, “but returning to the ark for rest; probably not in it, but upon it.”(Matthew Henry). It did this “until the waters had dried up from the earth.” The “raven” would have not left the security of the ark without a suitable “dry” place to nest along with sufficient food.

The “raven’s” behavior let Noah know that the water had started to appreciably dissipate.

The “raven” was probably released first since it was relatively more expendable than the dove(released afterward--cf.- :8-13). It was neither good for food or sacrifice. And ravens were present in the ark in greater numbers than the majority of the other animals(7:2-3).

“Dried up”—vby yaw-besh'—Qal Infinitive—1) To make dry, wither, be dry, become dry, be dried up, be withered. Strong—a primitive root; To be ashamed, confused or disappointed; also(as failing)--To dry up (as water) or Wither(as herbage).

:8—“He also sent out from himself a dove, to see if the waters had receded from the face of the ground.”

Noah “also” sent a “dove.” He sent it specifically to see if the water had dried up. Doves/Pigeons ‘can be’ faithful bearers of information for humans(carrier pigeons).

They are generally representative of gentleness. This ‘probably’ has some relation to the Holy Spirit’s hovering or brooding(Gen. 1:2) as well as His taking the form of a dove in Jesus’ unequivocal identification(Lk. 3:22; Jn. 1:31-34).

Genesis 1:2—“The earth was without form, & void; & darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”

Lk. 3:22—“And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, & a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.””

Jn. 1:31-34—“I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.” And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, & He remained upon Him. I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, & remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ “And I have seen & testified that this is the Son of God.”

Was the dove female(?)(Unfortunately my Hebrew grammar is pitiable). Some translations suggest such. A dove suggests a ‘manner’ that is at once more identifiable with people, being more “sensitive & discriminating.”—Derek Kidner in ‘Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries’(TOTC).

To call one’s girlfriend, betrothed, or wife a “dove” is a term of endearment.

For the Jews, the “dove” would also become both the burnt & sin offering for those who could not afford bulls, goats, & lambs.

The same is not stated of the raven which is obviously less picky regarding its nesting locations as well as it’s distance regarding humanity. In contrast to the dove, the raven was content with what it found to sustain itself & was thus not a faithful herald of the state of the world for human habitation.—TOTC

“Receded”(See :11 & 21—“Curse”)—llq kaw-lal'—Qal Perfect—1) To be slight, be swift, be trifling, be of little account, be light. Strong—a primitive root; To be(causatively, make) light, literally--Swift, small, sharp, etc.; or figuratively--Easy, trifling, vile, etc.

“Ground”—hmda ad-aw-maw’—Noun Fem.—1) Ground, land. Strong—from Mda; Soil(from its general redness).?From—Mda ’adam aw-dam'; to show blood(in the face), i.e. Flush or turn rosy.

:9—“But the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, & she returned into the ark to him, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth. So he put out his hand & took her, & drew her into the ark to himself.”

The dove returned to the ark having not even found a dry spot on which to rest “her foot.” This is because “the waters” were still covering the majority of the earth.

Noah personally took the dove in to himself.

:10—“And he waited yet another seven days, & again he sent the dove out from the ark.”

Noah waited -7- more days & sent the dove again. Evidently Noah suspected—per the raven’s behavior—that the waters were nearing a point of having receded enough to safely exit the ark.

Direct conversation from/with God had stopped. Noah had not heard from YHWH since 7:1-4, when he was told to enter the ark(i.e., it is not recorded that God spoke after that point).

The Hebrew for “Waited”(lwx) is not the typical word for patient waiting as in the following verse(:11). This gives us insight to Noah’s anxiousness. *Yet he did not move ahead of God’s leading. He indeed waited yet he did it with high anxiety as in the throes of childbirth! Noah was ‘chomping at the bit’ as it were...he had ‘cabin fever’ as it were.

“Waited”—lwx khuwl—Qal Imperfect—1) To twist, whirl, dance, writhe, fear, tremble, travail, be in anguish, be pained—1a) (Qal)—1a1) To dance, 1a2) To twist, writhe, 1a3) To whirl, whirl about. Strong—a primitive root; properly, To twist or whirl(in a circular or spiral manner), i.e. specifically--To dance, to writhe in pain(especially of parturition) or fear; figuratively--To wait, to pervert.

:11—“Then the dove came to him in the evening, & behold, a freshly plucked olive leaf was in her mouth; & Noah knew that the waters had receded from the earth.”

This time the dove was gone longer, not returning until the evening. When she returned, she brought back to the ark an “olive leaf” or possibly foliage from an olive tree. The “olive leaf” had been “freshly picked” so that it was becoming obvious to Noah that fruit trees had survived, were healthy because they were bearing fruit.

The “olive leaf” let Noah know that the water was gone from the earth.

“Evening”—bre bre—te ayth—1) Time—1a) Time(of an event), 1b) Time(usual), 1c) Experiences, fortunes, 1d) Occurrence, occasion. Strong—Time, especially(adverb with preposition) Now, when, etc. bre eh'-reb —1) Evening, night, sunset. Strong—Dusk.

“Freshly picked”—Prj taw-rawf'—1) Freshly picked, freshly plucked, fresh-plucked. Strong—Recently torn off, i.e. fresh. Used 1X.

“Mouth”—hp peh—Strong—The mouth(as the means of blowing), whether literal or figurative(particularly speech); specifically--Edge, portion or side; adverbially(with preposition)--According to.

:12—“So he waited yet another seven days & sent out the dove, which did not return again to him anymore.”

Noah again “waited” yet another 7 days. Thus far, since the ark has come to its resting place, its inhabitants have had to wait 54 consecutive days— 40 days(:6), 7 days(:10), & 7 days(:12)--~ 2 mths.

After this last 7 day waiting period, Noah then sent the dove, but this time she never returned to the ark. Thus Noah knew the earth was ready for the remainder of the animals & his own household.

“Waited/Stayed”(See :10—lwx khuwl)—lxy yaw-chal'—Niphal Imperfect—1) To wait, hope, expect. Strong—a primitive root; To wait; by implication--To be patient, hope.

“Anymore”—dwe `owd—Substantive—1) A going round, continuance; Adv.—2) Still, yet, again, besides. Strong—properly, Iteration or continuance; used only adverbially(with or without preposition)--Again, repeatedly, still, more.

:13—“And it came to pass in the six hundred & first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, that the waters were dried up from the earth; & Noah removed the covering of the ark & looked, & indeed the surface of the ground was dry.”

:14—“And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dried.” ”

This is a concise reiteration of :6-12. Noah had to “remove” the covering of the ark to see the land(:6, 13).

The “covering” of the ark was NOT the side door(6:16) by which all the inhabitants had entered, & by which YHWH had earlier shut them all inside(7:16).

On Noah’s 601st birthday, he saw that the water was gone from the surface of the earth but the ground was evidently still saturated, because :12 implies(dove did not return) & :13 specifies that “the earth” itself “was dried” completely(Qal Perfect) “in the 2nd month.”

Noah himself removed the covering(nondescript) from the ark so that he saw with his own eyes that the “ground” was dry.

7:11-16--02/17/600 of Noah=Water began & the ark was shut.

8:4--07/17/600 of Noah=Ark rested on mountain.

8:13--01/01/601 of Noah=Waters were dried from the earth.

8:14--02/27/601 of Noah=Earth was “dry” enough for habitation by the animals, Noah & his household.

Argumentation:

Christian conduct says something about the One we attempt to honor! It does not save you but the salvation changes the source of your conduct.

Eph. 4:21-5:1—“if indeed you have heard Him & have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, & be renewed in the spirit of your mind, & that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness & holiness. Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. Be angry, & do not sin: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil. Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, & evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. Eph. 5:2-11—“And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us & given Himself for us, an offering & a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. But fornication & all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ & God. Ps. 37:3-5—“Trust in the LORD, & do good; Dwell in the land, & feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass.”

1Pet. 5:5-7—“Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, & be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”

Confessional Compliance:

A new priest is nervous about hearing confessions, so he asks the older priest to sit in on his sessions. The new priest hears a couple of confessions, then the old priest asks him to step out of the confessional for a few suggestions.

The old priest suggests, “Cross you arms over your chest, & rub your chin with one hand.”

The new priest tries this.

The old priest suggests, “Try saying things like, ‘I see, yes, go on,’ & ‘I understand.’ ‘How did you feel about that?’”

The new priest says those things, & realizes that before, he had the wrong manner to put people at ease.
