The Psalms – The Language of Our Faith
Psalm 16 – Contentment and Satisfaction
May 20, 2018
Psalm 16:2-6 NIV
“I said to the Lord, "You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing." 3 As for the saints who are in the land, they are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight. 4 The sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods. I will not pour out their libations of blood or take up their names on my lips. 5 Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. 6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely, I have a delightful inheritance.
v.2 - "You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing."
When we’re not content, we feel there’s never enough. We live with a constant dissatisfaction.
My Story of Psalm 16
1 Timothy 6:6-8 NIV
“But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.”
The closer we are to God, we’re more satisfied with our lives here and now.
Remember how blessed we felt before the invention of social media. ??
Psalm 16:5-6 NIV
Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. 6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely, I have a delightful inheritance.
God’s given me this assignment, so I’m secure!
God’s given me boundaries, so there’s plenty of space to grow.
God’s given me a great inheritance.
The Table:
Ephesians 1:18-21 NIV
“I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, 20 which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.”
