:5—“For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands,”
“For in this manner, in former times” shows a continuing path of integrity linked with the Old Testament. The same “manner” speaks to & thru both current & past. Our current moral path is one which has remained unchanged from the beginning. “Also” signifies a direct connection between distant generations.
It is God’s design that there always be “holy women.” These “holy women” have always “trusted in God.” Therefore these have always taken it upon themselves to “adorn themselves” with “the hidden person of the heart”(3:4). *Godly women always seek spiritual “adornment” above & to the exclusion of a merely outward “adornment”(spawned of the flesh)(3:3; 1Tim. 2:9-10).
In their spiritual “adornment”, “holy women” of the past exemplified such “holiness” & “adornment” thru their “being submissive to their own husbands.”
Such a “submission to their own husbands” was & is the God-ordained means of honoring God’s design with man as ‘head.’ God is the one who designed godly male headship in marriage, to be bolstered & maintained thru godly female submission to that headship. His(husband’s) word ought to be the last word!
There is no Christ-honoring example of women who ‘unjustifiably’ usurped the role of headship over their family.
•Abigail took it upon herself to ‘save’ her family which had fallen into her husband, Nabal’s(‘foolish’) neglect(1Sam. 25:2-42), but she did so without disrespect of her husband’s God ordained headship. She(as do all godly wives) submitted to that wifely role, knowing that God ultimately rewards those who trust Him.

“Trusted/Hoped/Hoping/Put Their Hope”—elpizw—Verb—1) To hope—1a) in a religious sense--To wait for salvation with joy & full confidence; 2) Hopefully to trust in. Strong—To expect or confide.
“Also”—kai—Conjunction—1) And, also, even, indeed, but. Strong—apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative & sometimes also a cumulative force; And, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection(or composition) with other particles or small words.

Upotassw is a Greek military term meaning “to arrange [troop divisions] in a military fashion under the command of a leader.” In non-military use, it was "a voluntary attitude of giving in, cooperating, assuming responsibility, & carrying a burden.” Strong—To subordinate; reflexively--To obey.

:6—“...as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose daughters you are if you do good & are not afraid with any terror.”
Though Sarah was considered & designated as “a princess”, she was internally compelled to call her husband[Abraham=“father of a multitude” or “chief of multitude”], “Lord.”
Likewise, the Christian wife who is fully surrendered to Jesus is “daughter” to Sarah & other godly women. These have all grasped God’s design in submission to their respective husbands & lived out their own part in it’s fulfillment.
Obedience without honor is not godly obedience(Eph. 5:33).
Eph. 5:33—“Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, & let the wife see that she respects her husband.”
A wife’s submission to her husband is never blind obedience because he(husband) is a fallible person. A proper spirit & heart attitude are vital to the equation as well(:3-4). She affords the proper respect & dignity to the one whom God has ordained as head. She has taken on that role by means of her commitment in marriage to her husband.
Godly, submissive deportment(“obedience”) is & has always been expressed in Godly wives throughout the centuries in two other parallel ways...
1)One of these parallels to “obedience”(“Sarah obeyed Abraham”) is simply that a godly wife “does good.” Of course this is wide open-ended statement. Her call is to “do” God’s “good.” Her ‘to do list’ is what every Christian should “do” within her particular context.
2)The other parallel to “obedience” is the godly wife’s being “not afraid with any terror” or not giving way to fear. An ungodly erring husband can definitely strike fear into the heart of his wife. However a godly wife married to a godly husband has no reason to be terrorized by his oppression. Rather she is free to love & live in a godly manner with the joy of God’s tranquility & purpose.
“As”—wv—Adverb—1) As, like, even as, etc. Strong—probably adverb of comparative from ov, h, o; Which how, i.e. In that manner(very variously used).
“Sarah”—Sarra—Noun Proper Fem.—Sarah = “princess"—1) The wife of Abraham. Strong— the same as hrs; Sarah, Abraham's wife. Used 4X.
Of Hebrew origin [hrs Saw-raw’]; Sarah = “noblewoman”—1) wife of Abraham & mother of Isaac. Strong—the same as hrs saw-raw'; feminine of rs[a head person(of any rank or class)]; A mistress, i.e. Female noble.
“Obeyed”—upakouw—1) To listen, to harken—1a) Of one who on the knock at the door comes to listen who it is,(the duty of a porter); 2) To harken to a command—2a) To obey, be obedient to, submit to. Strong—To hear under(as a subordinate), i.e. To listen attentively; by implication--To heed or conform to a command or authority.
