Attention:
Hurricane Irma hit south Florida September 7, 2017. Hundreds of thousands were evacuated. An official’ total of 72 people were killed by the storm. 1/4 of all homes in the Keys were destroyed. It was reported by CNN that 24 people died in the evacuation process.
*There was a FL family of evacuees who had a small farm with livestock. They had to leave all their animals behind. The brunt of the storm hit the area of their farm. They returned to find all their animals safe & unharmed!
The animals escaped unharmed. Their’s was unplanned, & unexpected...
Noah & his family’s escape was obviously miraculous, planned, calculated, & expected!
We’ve found previously that ‘Escaping God’s designed destruction’ requires Appropriate...
1. MOTION(:1, 5)
All on the ark escaped the destruction of the Flood.
All on the ark escaped God’s removal strategy(designed destruction).
Divinely designed destruction can be escaped/avoided.
How can we escape such an ordained destruction/removal?
*4 keys/requirements to escape God’s designed destruction.
2—Escaping God’s designed destruction requires...
Appropriate LIVING(:1b)
Explanation: (:1b) Surrender
:1—“Then the LORD said to Noah, “Come into the ark, you & all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation.”
“Because”—The escape of Noah’s household is secured based upon factual reason.
In the presence of rampant apostasy, Noah lived in a manner which glorified YaHWeH as the One, true God.
YaHWeH “saw” Noah’s “righteousness.” Noah’s household was rewarded with ‘life’ because of Noah’s trust in God & his personal application of that trust in his daily life(2Pet. 2:5—“a preacher of righteousness”).
Noah lived “righteously” “before” God. Living righteously before God is living righteously continuously—Doing that which is ‘right’(eous) in God’s eyes—Knowing that God knows our very hearts!
(cf.-Lk. 16:15; Acts 1:24; 1Chron. 28:9; Ps. 44:21; Jer. 17:10)
Lk. 16:15—“And He said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.”
Acts 1:24—“And they prayed & said, “You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen”
1Chron. 28:9—“As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, & serve Him with a loyal heart & with a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts & understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever.”
Ps. 44:21—“Would not God search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.”
Jer. 17:10—“I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.”
The salvation of the family is their’s because of the righteous character of Noah. God is blessing Noah’s “righteousness” toward Him, by means of his family. Noah’s salvation alone would be devastating apart from his family.
(Cf.--Recall Rahab & her family’s salvation:Josh. 2:4a, 6, 8-14; 6:21-25).
*Do not think that this means your family’s decision to trust Christ saves you or that your personal decision to trust Christ saves your family.
*Paul tells us that an individual’s salvation ‘inserts the influence’ of God’s holiness into a family...
1Cor. 7:12-14—“But to the rest I, not the Lord, say: If any brother has a wife who does not believe, & she is willing to live with him, let him not divorce her. And a woman who has a husband who does not believe, if he is willing to live with her, let her not divorce him. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, & the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy.”
Noah’s uprightness “before” God is a sound condemnation of “this generation” in which Noah lived. But lest you think Noah to be an untouchable ‘super-saint’ or infallible, see Gen. 9:20-22(:23-27)—
Gen. 9:20-22—“And Noah began to be a farmer, & he planted a vineyard. Then he drank of the wine & was drunk, & became uncovered in his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, & told his two brothers outside.”(FYI—Ham exploited the intimacy of his father’s vulnerability).
Also note that Job was a man who lived righteously in integrity of heart before God...& both prospered & suffered horribly! The important thing is that he was faithful!
Job 1:1, 6, 8, 20-22; 2:1, 3, 9-10—“There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; & that man was blameless & upright, & one who feared God & shunned evil.”.....“Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, & Satan also came among them.”.....“Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless & upright man, one who fears God & shuns evil?”.....“Then Job arose, tore his robe, & shaved his head; & he fell to the ground & worshiped. And he said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, & the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD.” In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong. Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, & Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.”.....“Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless & upright man, one who fears God & shuns evil? And still he holds fast to his integrity, although you incited Me against him, to destroy him without cause.”.....“Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God & die!” But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God, & shall we not accept adversity?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.”
“Seen”—har raw-aw'—Verb—1) To see, look at, inspect, perceive, consider—1a) (Qal)—1a1) To see, 1a2) To see, perceive, 1a3) To see, have vision, 1a4) To look at, see, regard, look after, see after, learn about, observe, watch, look upon, look out, find out, 1a5) To see, observe, consider, look at, give attention to, discern, distinguish, 1a6) To look at, gaze at. Argumentation:
Zeph. 2:3—“Seek the LORD, all you meek of the earth, Who have upheld His justice. Seek righteousness, seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden In the day of the LORD’S anger.”
Heb. 11:6-7—“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, & that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world & became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.”
Prov. 11:4—“Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, But righteousness delivers from death.”
Prov. 11:5-9—“The righteousness of the blameless will direct his way aright, But the wicked will fall by his own wickedness. The righteousness of the upright will deliver them, But the unfaithful will be caught by their lust. When a wicked man dies, his expectation will perish, And the hope of the unjust perishes. The righteous is delivered from trouble, And it comes to the wicked instead. The hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbor, But through knowledge the righteous will be delivered.”
Isa. 3:10-11—““Say to the righteous that it shall be well with them, For they shall eat the fruit of their doings. Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, For the reward of his hands shall be given him.”
Jn. 5:39-40—““You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; & these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.”
Col. 2:20—3:7—“Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations--“Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” which all concern things which perish with the using--according to the commandments & doctrines of men? These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, & neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, & your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, & covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.”
Gal. 2:20—““I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; & the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me & gave Himself for me.”
Mat.7:21—““Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”
Mat. 12:50—““For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother & sister & mother.””
1Jn. 2:17—“And the world is passing away, & the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”
Gal. 5:19-25—“Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, & the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions & desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
Rom. 6:8-14—“Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, & your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”
Php. 4:10-20—“But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at last your care for me has flourished again; though you surely did care, but you lacked opportunity. Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, & I know how to abound. Everywhere & in all things I have learned both to be full & to be hungry, both to abound & to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress. Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving & receiving but you only. For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once & again for my necessities. Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. Indeed I have all & abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God. And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Now to our God & Father be glory forever & ever. Amen.
