Message Point: We must eliminate the world-poisoning that makes us spiritually sick.

Focus Passage: Galatians 6:1-10 (Pew Bible page 1341)

Introduction: Manufacturers have made products that are readily available that claim to “detox” your body. The premise is that toxins build up in your body and aren’t good for you and you should get them out of your body. We know that people who use drugs, prescriptions or illicit, build up residual toxins from those meds and if they go without the drugs, their body starts a natural detoxification process that is often painful to experience. Well, our lives also build up residuals that need to be eliminated. Some of the problems are caused by our own sin; other problems are caused by the sins of other people. I hope, today, to be able to help you detox your life by applying appropriate Scripture and practices.

I. Detox your past

a. FORGIVE!

i. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. (Ephesians 4:31-32 NASB)

b. Accept God’s forgiveness

i. Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:1 NASB)

ii. Reject the lies of false teaching

II. Detox your present

a. Repent

i. From that time Jesus began to preach and say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." (Matthew 4:17 NASB)

ii. "Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; (Acts 3:19 NASB)

iii. "Now it's time to change your ways! Turn to face God so he can wipe away your sins, pour out showers of blessing to refresh you, (Acts 3:19 MSG)

b. Abide in Jesus today!

i. "Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love. (John 15:9 NASB)

c. Rid yourself of toxic people (the goal is restoration of the person)

i. Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. (Galatians 6:1 NASB)

ii. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. (Romans 12:18 NASB)

iii. As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, (Ephesians 4:14-15 NASB)

III. Detox your future

a. Plan ahead to keep out of sin

i. No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13 NASB)

b. Wake up tomorrow and ask God to give you strength

i. And He was saying to them all, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. (Luke 9:23 NASB)

Application/Invitation: What do you need to do today to detox your life? Who do you need to forgive? Of whom do you need to seek forgiveness and reconciliation? Are you reconciled to God? “…as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Corinthians 5:20b-21 NASB)
