A person’s name is important. It identifies you as being uniquely yourself. In Proverbs 22:1 the wise man said it best when he wrote “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold.”
Names are a part of us every day and in every way. We name everything. We call each other names when we are happy or when we are mad.
We name our dogs, cars, boats, houses, and everything else you can think of. …. I name my hunting gun “Sweet Betsy Lou” and my Harley is named “Sweet Pea.”
I was at a conference once and I heard about a preacher that named his bed. He named it The Word. That way when someone called him late at night and said what are you doing he could honestly answer that he is in the Word.
Names are important.
In the Bible when something extraordinary happened to someone then that person would sometimes name the place appropriately. In our story Jacob named the place where his transformation happened. He named it Penuel.
Names are important and they show importance.
Names can show love and honor they can show respect and adoration. Names can show shame and humiliation, Names can change the whole outlook of various situations.
Names are important. Names can vary and many names can be given to us or to God. In fact God has many names. I want to talk about some of those names because they give us very clear insights into various character traits of God, or functions of God or even reveals His heart and attitude for us.
There are literally hundreds of names for God listed in the Bible and all of them are very important. So, let’s take a very short look at just a few of them.
1. JEHOVAH-GMOLAH........ "The God of Recompense"
Jeremiah 51:5-6 For Israel hath not been forsaken, nor Judah of his God, of the Lord of hosts; though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel. 6 Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the Lord's vengeance; he will render unto her a recompense.
To recompense means to make amends to someone for loss or harm suffered; compensate. Compensation or reward given for loss or harm suffered or effort made.
2. JEHOVAH-MACCADDESHEM....... "The Lord thy Sanctifier."
Exodus 31:13 “That ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you.”
To sanctify means “To set a person apart and to cleanse from the stain of sin and clean up a person’s life; enabling them to live a holy and sinless life.”
3. JEHOVAH-ROHI...... "The Lord my Shepherd"
Psalms 23:1-4 “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”
The Lord is the best shepherd there is!
4. JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH....... "The Lord who is present"
Ezekiel 48:35 “The Lord is there.”
Hebrews 13:5 “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
5. JEHOVAH-RAPHA......... "The Lord our Healer"
Exodus 15:26 “And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee.”
6. JEHOVAH-TSIDKENU...... "The Lord our Righteousness"
Jeremiah 23:6 “In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE Lord OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”
Righteousness simply means to be in right standing with God. Living a life that is pleasing to Him; both in our behavior and in our obedience to our specific callings.
7. JEHOVAH-JIREH......... "The Lord will See and Provide"
Genesis 22:13-14 “And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-Jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.”
8. JEHOVAH-NISSI......... "The Lord our Banner"
Exodus 17:15 “And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-Nissi:”
The banner spoken of here is not a store banner or an advertisement; it is a military Banner. During battle, it was raised so the troops could see where there were supposed to be. It was a guide flag, if you will.
9. JEHOVAH-SHALOM........ "The Lord is Peace"
Judges 6:24 “Then Gideon built an altar there unto the Lord, and called it Jehovah-shalom:”
There really is a peace that passes all understanding.
It is a Fruit of the Spirit.
10. JEHOVAH-SABBAOTH...... "The Lord of Hosts"
Isaiah 6:1-3 “In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. 2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. 3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.”
The title "Lord of hosts" says several things about the nature of God and about His creation. It emphasizes God’s ultimate power over the whole universe and every living creature.
“Lord of Hosts” refers to every living thing, Human beings, and spiritual beings and in every dimension that exists. In other words, God is not just creator of the earth and everyone on it, but Creator of every living thing; all creatures and all of creation are subject to the power of God. We, in turn, as His creation exist to love and to serve His purposes.
And so these names of God are just the first 10. There are many more that I could mention. Check out a few of them real quick.
