Summary: I don't like things that are stale. They taste sour, limp, bitter, etc. Many Christians are stale! They got the Spirit years ago, but none lately. God wants us to have a FRESH experience of the Spirit. He promises us FRESH OIL!

ANOINTED WITH FRESH OIL

Ps. 92:10

INTRODUCTION

A. HUMOR: JUST TO BE SURE

1. Ever since Emma joined her church's choir, she'd been singing in her kitchen while preparing dinner. But strangely, whenever she started singing, her husband Joshua opens the front door and stood on the doorstep.

2. Emma didn't know why he did this so one evening she asked him, "Darling tell me the truth. Don’t you like my singing?" "Why do you ask?" he replied.

3. "Because every time I start singing, when you're at home, you get up and stand on our doorstep," she replied.

4. "Well actually, I quite like your singing," said Joshua, "but I just want to make sure that our neighbors don't think I’m beating you."

B. TEXT

“But my horn [emblem of strength and power] shall You exalt like the horn of an unicorn [rhino?]: I shall be anointed with fresh oil.” Ps. 92:10, KJV.

C. PURPOSE OF MOTOR OIL

1. Most car owners know that if you drive too many miles without changing the oil, it loses its usefulness as a lubricant and as a detergent for the engine.

2. Motor oil cleanses out the impurities in the engine – dirt, grime, and small flecks of metal – so the engine can keep running smoothly.

3. Spiritually speaking, there are many Christians who received an anointing of the Spirit years ago, but haven’t had an “oil change” since!

4. Just like we MUST have fresh oil in our cars, we also must have fresh oil of the Spirit in our lives too!

D. THESIS

1. So tonight we’re looking in the Scriptures at how oil is used as a symbol of the Holy Spirit.

2. In Psalm 92:10, God makes us a special promise of renewal of the Holy Spirit. We’re going to look at the purposes of God’s oil, the source of God’s anointing, and what the Bible means when it says we’ll be anointed with fresh oil.

3. The title is, “Anointed with Fresh Oil.”

I. PURPOSES & USES OF OIL

A. SACRED USES

1. PURPOSES OF THE ANOINTINGS. People were anointed in the Bible to:

a. Set them apart to God, and

b. To consecrate them to sacred office.

2. RECIPE OF THE SACRED/HOLY OIL. The Holy Oil was made up of 4 spices: myrrh, sweet cinnamon, sweet

calamus, and cassia. These were mingled with a ‘hin’ (4 quarts) of olive oil. It created a beautiful fragrance.

3. WHO RECEIVED THESE ANOINTINGS

a. PROPHETS. Elijah was told to anoint Elisha to be prophet in his ‘room’ or office (1 Kg. 19:16).

b. PRIESTS. They were set apart for ministry by the Holy Oil (Ex. 30:30; 40:13-15; Lev. 8:12,30).

c. KINGS. Ex., 1 Sam. 16:13,6.

d. Vessels in the Tabernacle/ Temple. Once anointed, they became holy. They couldn’t be touched except by authorized people, i.e., the priests or Levites.

4. WHAT RECEIVING IT SYMBOLIZED

a. Surrender to the work of the Holy Spirit.

b. The anointing of the Spirit brings liberty (Lk. 4:18) and breaks the yoke of bondage (Isa. 10:27, KJV).

B. COMMON USES

1. Cleansing of Lepers (Lev. 14:17-18);

2. As a Medicine (Lk. 10:34; Rev. 3:18);

3. As Fuel for Light in Lamps (Mt. 25:1-13);

4. As part of Diet, food (2 Kgs. 4:1-7);

5. Cosmetic, as a beauty aid (Ps. 104:15).

C. ANOINTING WITH OIL FOR HEALING

1. James 5:14-15, Church Elders anoint for healing.

2. The 12 disciples anointed for healing, Mk. 6:13.

II. TRUE SOURCE OF THE ANOINTING

A. THE TERM “ANOINTING” IS INSEPARABLY LINKED TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

1. In Zech. 4:1-14, the prophet Zechariah saw the golden lamp-stand, the Menorah, with its 7 lights, being fed by a constant flowing stream of olive oil.

2. God told the Governor that the answer to their problems was pictured in the oil; “’It’s not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit’ says the Lord Almighty.

3. Isaiah said, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me…” (Isa. 61:1).

4. When Samuel anointed David with oil, it says, “from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came on David with power” 1 Sam. 16:13.

B. JESUS IS “THE ANOINTED ONE”

1. The words “Messiah” & “Christ” both mean “Anointed One” in the original languages. The Son of God is called God’s “Anointed” in Ps. 2:2. His anointing by the Father is described in Psalm 45:7 and Isa. 61:1/Lk. 4:18.

2. God gives Jesus “the Spirit without measure” (Jn. 3:34). He has an unlimited supply of the Spirit! “Of His fullness have we all received” John 1:16.

3. Acts 10:38 tells, “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.”

4. And just as God took of the Spirit that was on Moses and put it on the 70 elders of Israel (Num. 11:25) as a sign, God has made Jesus the One who baptizes (all others) with the Holy Spirit (Mt. 3:11; Mk. 1:8; Lk. 3:16).

5. John the Baptist said that God told him, “The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.” Jn. 1:33.

C. HUMOR

1. After Sunday morning service, the Pastor made his way to the door to shake hands with the congregation as they exited the church.

2. One lady shook his hand and said, “That was a good sermon Pastor!”

3. He gave the humble response, “Well, Ma’am, it wasn’t me; it was just the Holy Spirit!”

4. She rejoined, “No, it wasn’t that good!”

III. ANOINTED WITH FRESH OIL

A. IT RAISED THE STATUS OF THOSE ON WHOM IT WAS POURED

1. People are set apart to heavenly purpose.

2. Made into prophets, priests, and kings.

B. INVIGORATES & EMPOWERS TO GREATER SERVICE

1. The Hebrew word used in Ps. 92:10 is “rah-an-awn” and means “fresh, new, vigorous, flourishing.”

2. Matthew Henry says the term “fresh oil” means:

a. A fresh confirmation in his office;

b. Plenty: fresh applications of oil as often as needed;

c. Spirit-revival when our spirits droop.

3. So the phrase “fresh oil” means a reapplication or resupply of the original anointing to carry the supplicant through whatever needs are present.

C. CONFIDENT ASSURANCE

1. The Hebrew actually says, “I SHALL BE anointed with fresh oil.” He doesn’t say, “I hope,” but he’s sure of what he affirms.

2. Reason for his confidence? God has spoken; it’s written. We are united to the Anointed One. The Holy Spirit now dwells within us. God has promised us His Holy Spirit.

3. Praise God, “I shall be anointed with fresh oil!”

CONCLUSION

A. ILLUSTRATION

1. A young artist was trying to copy Raphael's "Madonna and Child," one of the most beautiful pictures in all the world. He went to Florence, Italy and gazed on it, then got his easel.

2. Sitting down in front of it he began to copy it. As he looked at it his picture became a thing of beauty, too.

3. But suppose that, instead of only copying, the spirit of Raphael could have come upon that young man: what a difference it would make!

4. When we come to the Lord Jesus, He gives us His Holy Spirit, Who helps us live as Jesus would live, to say what Jesus would say, and love the way Jesus would love!

5. Will you come to Him now and ask Him to give you His Holy Spirit? (Intermediate Young People)

B. THE CALL

1. How many need a fresh anointing? How many want a fresh anointing?

2. God promises to:

a. give us as much oil as we need;

b. Recommission us with His Spirit;

c. Revive our drooping spirits by His Spirit!

3. Let’s pray!
