WICKEDNESS That INVITES REPERCUSSION-III—Genesis 6:1-8

If people would take it upon themselves to heed God’s alarm clock, they would not be considered by Him to be ‘wicked,’ & would thus have opportunity to not suffer the consequences of missing His presence!
Genesis records the wanton wickedness of humanity & its repercussions.
Repercussion—An unintended consequence occurring some time after an event or action, esp. an unwelcome one.
Wanton wickedness invites repercussion.
How/When does wickedness invite repercussion?
7 channels thru which wickedness invites repercussion.

Aberrant STANCE(:4)
Explanation: (:4)
:4—“There were giants on the earth in those days, & also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men & they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.”
This situation of (“giants on the earth”) was evidently still present after the world-wide Flood into Moses’ time(he is the writer of Genesis!)—hence the phrase “also afterward, when.”
“Afterward,” in postdiluvian times, these ‘giants’ are never presented as some strange mixture of humanity with the demonic—although that which was demonic may have had a tremendously influential relationship upon them!
These are only men, although they were definitely ferocious, brutish, or animalistic in behavior. Thus there is no real mystery to the designations “sons of God” & their relationship to the “daughters of men.”
The presence of these Nephilim(so-called “giants”) ‘SEEMS’ to be directly tied to the “sons of God going in to the daughters of men.” A noteworthy outworking of the progeny of this union ‘MAY’ have been the Nephilim or “mighty men.
*However, this statement that the Nephilim were present “when”, may simply be a statement that the Nephilim were ‘absolutely not’ a result of the union of “the sons of God with the “daughters of men.” They were merely present in the same time-period. This would be evidenced by the Nephilim being present “also afterward.”
These “men of renown” are mentioned because they are readily noteworthy.
*“Renown” has a neutral connotation. It is qualified by its context. One can either be a renowned farmer or citizen OR a renowned murderer or dictator.
These Nephilim(?) were of some notoriety & ferocious reputation among men whose demeanor was quite unlike them.
*This fits in especially well with an understanding of the “sons of God” being the sons thru whom Noah was produced.
“Giants/Nephilim”—lypn nef-eeyl' OR—lpn nef-eel' OR Mylpn nef-fawl-eem'(plural)—1) Giants, the Nephilim. Strong—properly--A feller, i.e. A bully or tyrant. Used 3X.
From—lpn naw-fal'—Strong—a primitive root; To fall, in a great variety of applications(intransitive or causative, literal or figurative).
“The term in Hebrew[Mylpn] implies not so much the idea of great stature as [it does] of reckless ferocity, impious & daring characters, who spread devastation & carnage far & wide.”—JFB
“The whole problem with verse four is relating the allusion to these men who were mighty or strong & “men of renown [name]” to the context of the degradation of humanity. An answer may lie in the reference to nephilim in Numbers [sic.-13:]33.”....“So, while these nephilim could have been tall & strong(with some exaggeration by the spies being considered), their obvious military prowess may have struck fear into the Israelites.....Thus, nephilim may not have been a reference to a racial group as such, but rather to those of a fearsome character.”—Trevor Major
...Or, I might add, Mylpn may refer to a racial group which is characterized by exceptionally ferocity!
And if the numbers of the “sons of God” were sizably reduced by such rampant ferocity & ungodliness(cf.--:5), then the testimony & influence of the “sons of God” was significantly reduced.
Num. 13:33—““There we saw the giants Mylpn(Nephalim) (the descendants of Anak came from the giants Mylpn); & we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, & so we were in their sight.””
This is the only other use of Mylpn(Nephalim) used outside of Genesis. Used 3X in total thruout the whole Bible.
Thus we can gather that the Nephalim were at minimum a very tall, & along with that, an imposing people, judging by the comparison with grasshoppers.
Deut. 2:9-11—““Then the LORD said to me, ‘Do not harass Moab, nor contend with them in battle, for I will not give you any of their land as a possession, because I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as a possession.’”(The Emim had dwelt there in times past, a people as great & numerous & tall[Mwr] as the Anakim. They were also regarded as giants[Myapr], like the Anakim, but the Moabites call them Emim.”
Deut. 2:19-21—“‘And when you come near the people of Ammon, do not harass them or meddle with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the people of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to the descendants of Lot as a possession.’” (That was also regarded as a land of giants[Myapr]; giants[Myapr] formerly dwelt there. But the Ammonites call them Zamzummim, a people as great & numerous & tall[Mwr] as the Anakim. But the LORD destroyed them before them, & they dispossessed them & dwelt in their place,”
Though the Emim, Zamzummim, & Anakim are distinguished as separate peoples, they are all three regarded as “giants(Myapr[Rephaim]).” All three of the people groups share being “giants”(Myapr[Rephaim]).” And the Anakim were descended from the Mylpn(Nephilim)(Num 13:33).
*“Emim”—Mymya ay-meem'(plural)—“Terrors”
*“Zamzummim”—Mymzmz zam-zomeem'—“Plotters”
*“Anakim”—yqne an-aw-kee'(plural)—“Long-necked”
*“Great”—lwdg gaw-dole' OR (shortened)-ldg gaw-dole'—Adj.—1a) Large(in magnitude & extent), 1b) In number, 1c) In intensity, 1d) Loud(in sound), 1e) Older(in age), 1f) In importance—1f1) Important things, 1f2) Great, distinguished(of men), 1f3) God Himself(of God). Substantive—1g) Great things, 1h) Haughty things, 1i) Greatness. Noun Proper Nominative—1j) (CLBL)--Haggedolim, the great man?, father of Zabdiel. Strong—Great(in any sense); hence--Older; also--Insolent. *“Tall”—Mwr ruwm—Qal Participle Active—1) To rise, rise up, be high, be lofty, be exalted; 1a) (Qal)--1a1) To be high, be set on high, 1a2) To be raised, be uplifted, be exalted, 1a3) To be lifted, rise. Strong—a primitive root; To be high actively, to rise or raise(in various applications, literally or figuratively).
**This word IS a VERB & NOT an ADJECTIVE.**
*“Giants”—apr raw-faw' OR—hpr raw-faw' OR—Myapr raw-faw-eeym(plural)—Noun Proper Gent—1) Giants, Rephaim—1a) Old tribe of giants. Strong—from apr[see ‘From’ below] in the sense of invigorating; A giant. The singular form is also used in reference to the physical healing effected by physicians &/or God. Used 25X(in the Numbers & Deuteronomy passages).
**From—apr raw-faw'—Verb—1) To heal, make healthful. Strong—a primitive root; properly--To mend(by stitching), i.e. figuratively--To cure. Used 67X.
*Thereby, these “giants”(Myapr[Rephaim]) are *probably* a people recognized for their vigor/vitality &/or for the efficiency of their medical arts.
REGARDING STATURE &/or ‘TALLNESS’...
**But witness, Og, king of Bashan who had a bed that was 9 cubits X 4 cubits(~13.5 ft. X 6 ft. wide=2X length of a king-size mattress)(Deut. 3:11)[A standard cubit was ~18 in. or the length of the forearm--from elbow to wrist]—though this may be attributed to mere opulence on the part of the king.
***And the clincher...we must regard Goliath & his family in David’s Day(~1010-970BC~). His height is tabulated as being six cubits & a span(~9.5 ft.)(1Sam. 17:4).
Goliath’s armor & weapons *could have* to have weighed between 150-200 lbs.—David Guzik
So the Mylpn(Nephalim’s) singular & imposing size/mass, coupled with their ungodly & brutishly ferocious character are apparent...So...
*...Why mention the Nephilim in Genesis 4? What would be the purpose?...
God, thru Moses, is preparing the children of Israel for entrance into the promised land. He is giving the spies a preview of the sheer power of the people groups that Israel will face. Yet even these will be defeated & supplanted by God’s hand thru Israel! Israel is entering the land because of the sin of the peoples of the land, which has overwhelmed God’s message...just as it had in Gen. 6.
Of course one must consider that ideally, Moses would have received & revealed this entire revelation during Israel’s endeavors at Mt. Sinai prior to the spies’ initial entrance into Canaan. However such a preview could have been revealed at any time(& probably continuously) prior to Israel’s crossing the Jordan with much the same effect.
“Afterward”—yrxa akh-ar'—1) After the following part, behind(of place), hinder, afterwards(of time). Strong—properly--The hind part; generally used as an adverb or conjunction--After(in various senses).
“Mighty men/Heroes”—rbg gibbor—Adj.—1) Strong, mighty. OR —Noun Masc.—2) Strong man, brave man, mighty man. Strong—intensive(from the same as rbg gheh'-ber— properly--A valiant man or warrior; generally--A person simply); Powerful; by implication--Warrior, tyrant.
“Renown/Reputation”—Mv Shem—1) Name—1a) name, 1b) Reputation, fame, glory, 1c) The Name(as designation of God), 1d) Memorial, monument. Strong—a primitive word [perhaps rather from Mws(to put) through the idea of definite & conspicuous position; compare Mymv(lofty)]; An appellation, as a mark or memorial of individuality; by implication--Honor, authority, character.
Argumentation:
Heb. 10:19-31—“Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new & living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, & having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience & our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider one another in order to stir up love & good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, & so much the more as you see the Day approaching. For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, & fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, & insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. And again, “The LORD will judge His people.” It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”
1Jn. 5:18-19—“We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, & the wicked one does not touch him. We know that we are of God, & the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.”
Jas 4:1-10—“Where do wars & fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust & do not have. You murder & covet & cannot obtain. You fight & war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask & do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. Adulterers & adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”? But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil & he will flee from you. Draw near to God & He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; & purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament & mourn & weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning & your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, & He will lift you up.”
Jude 1:3-10—“Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness & deny the only Lord God & our Lord Jesus Christ. But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; as Sodom & Gomorrah, & the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality & gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, & speak evil of dignitaries. Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; & whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves.”
**Mat. 5:3-10—[Jesus said]“Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger & thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
**Rev. 13:1-9—[regarding the future Anti-Christ]“Then I[John] stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast rising up out of the sea, having seven heads & ten horns, & on his horns ten crowns, & on his heads a blasphemous name. Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, & his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, & great authority. And I saw one of his heads as if it had been mortally wounded, & his deadly wound was healed. And all the world marveled & followed the beast. So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; & they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?” And he was given a mouth speaking great things & blasphemies, & he was given authority to continue for forty-two months. Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, His tabernacle, & those who dwell in heaven. It was granted to him to make war with the saints & to overcome them. And authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, & nation. All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. If anyone has an ear, let him hear.” **Ezek. 34:2-5—““Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy & say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD to the shepherds: “Woe to the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flocks? You eat the fat & clothe yourselves with the wool; you slaughter the fatlings, but you do not feed the flock. The weak you have not strengthened, nor have you healed those who were sick, nor bound up the broken, nor brought back what was driven away, nor sought what was lost; but with force & cruelty you have ruled them. So they were scattered because there was no shepherd; & they became food for all the beasts of the field when they were scattered.”
**Mat. 20:20-28—“Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Him with her sons, kneeling down & asking something from Him. And He said to her, “What do you wish?” She said to Him, “Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand & the other on the left, in Your kingdom.” But Jesus answered & said, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, & be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They said to Him, “We are able.” So He said to them, “You will indeed drink My cup, & be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on My right hand & on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father.” And when the ten heard it, they were greatly displeased with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to Himself & said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, & those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave-- just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, & to give His life a ransom for many.””
1Pet. 5:2-4—“Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; & when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.”
**Lk. 4:17-21—“And He[Jesus] was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.” Then He closed the book, & gave it back to the attendant & sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.””
