Message Point: We should use Israel’s bad example to keep us from making the same mistake.
Focus Passage: 1 Corinthians 10:1-13
Introduction: Give a personal experience of following a bad example and the trouble it brought.
I. Do not be idolaters
a. Exodus 32: While Moses was receiving the 10 Commandments, the people demanded a god to worship
b. Aaron made a golden calf
c. The people feasted and danced around it in worship
d. What idols do you have? money? kids? TV? status?
II. Do not act immorally
a. Numbers 25: 23,000 died in one day as judgment
b. While perhaps not known with certainty, it is assumed that Baal of Peor was much like the god Priapus and represented a phallus.
c. It is said the people joined with Baal of Peor.
d. Are there any ways you act inappropriately either in morals or ethics?
III. Do not Try the Lord
a. Numbers 21: In the wilderness, they accused God and Moses of bringing them out in the desert to die
b. God sent serpents to bite and kill them
c. They repented and asked God for deliverance
d. God told Moses to put a serpent on a pole and if they were bite, they were to look at the pole and be saved
e. Note that God didn’t take the serpents away
f. Do you accuse God of not taking care of you or not bowing to your every wish?
IV. Do not Grumble
a. Numbers 16: Korah complained against Moses and his leadership and tried to take over
b. God killed Korah
c. The congregation rose up and complained against Moses for Korah’s death; God sent a plague that killed 14,700
d. Do you grumble against God or the leadership He has placed over you?
