Now therefore, if you will obey My voice in truth and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own peculiar possession and treasure from among and above all peoples; for all the earth is Mine.

According to all the works which they have done since I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking Me and serving other gods, so they also do to you.
1 Samuel 15:22 (Amplified Bible)
Samuel said, Has the Lord as great a delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
VIII. MAIN BODY:
1 Samuel 13:9 (Amplified Bible)

1 Samuel 13:9 (New King James Version)
So Saul said, "Bring a burnt offering and peace offerings here to me." And he offered the burnt offering.
A. Saul commanded and offered
"So Saul said, Bring me the burnt offering and the peace offerings."
Psalms 37:7 (Amplified Bible)
Be still and rest in the Lord; wait for Him and patiently lean yourself upon Him; fret not yourself because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked devices to pass.
Proverbs 15:8 (Amplified Bible)
The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination, hateful and exceedingly offensive to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is His delight!
Amos 5:22 (Amplified Bible)
Though you offer Me your burnt offerings and your cereal offerings, I will not accept them, neither will I look upon the peace or thank offerings of your fatted beasts.
The LORD GOD rejects our offerings if we take vengeance against our enemies, let the LORD JESUS do it for us and He will be pleased and will rescue us from our enemies
Proverbs 21:3 (Amplified Bible)
To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice. .
Proverbs 20:22 (Amplified Bible)
Do not say, I will repay evil; wait [expectantly] for the Lord, and He will rescue you.
Hosea 6:6 (Amplified Bible)
For I desire and delight in dutiful steadfast love and goodness, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of and acquaintance with God more than burnt offerings.
Proverbs 21:3 (Amplified Bible)
To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.
1 Samuel 15:22 (Amplified Bible)
Samuel said, Has the Lord as great a delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
Proverbs 15:8 (Amplified Bible)
The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination, hateful and exceedingly offensive to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is His delight!
Isaiah 66:3 (Amplified Bible)
[The acts of the hypocrite’s worship are as abominable to God as if they were offered to idols.] He who kills an ox [then] will be as guilty as if he slew and sacrificed a man; he who sacrifices a lamb or a kid, as if he broke a dog’s neck and sacrificed him; he who offers a cereal offering, as if he offered swine’s blood; he who burns incense [to God], as if he blessed an idol. [Such people] have chosen their own ways, and they delight in their abominations;
It is better to obey GOD's command and let GOD sacrifice Himself on the cross - the Ultimate Sacrifice, for He will never change, He has provided the sacrifice and it's all done in the LORD JESUS. We can never do anything to add to GOD'S Perfect Sacrifice and that is the LORD JESUS.
Genesis 22:8 (Amplified Bible)
Abraham said, My son, God Himself will provide a lamb for the burnt offering. So the two went on together.
Revelation 21:6 (Amplified Bible)
And He [further] said to me, It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I [Myself] will give water without price from the fountain (springs) of the water of Life.
John 19:30 (Amplified Bible)
When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, It is finished! And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
It was all finished on the cross of calvary, nothing to be added, nothing to be taken away. It is the Ultimate, Infinite Perfect Sacrifice that was the Only Acceptable Sacrifice - the Sacrifice of the LORD JESUS.
1 Corinthians 2:8 (Amplified Bible)
None of the rulers of this age or world perceived and recognized and understood this, for if they had, they would never have crucified the Lord of glory.
JESUS won by dying on the cross and on the third day He rose again.
B. It was forbidden for kings during old testament to function as both priest and king
"And he offered the burnt offering [which he was forbidden to do]."
We have two different covenants, dispensations, the old and the new testament. In the old testament, you are either one of the two: a priest or a king but cannot be both, only Kind David functioned in these two positions at the same time because King David is a spiritual person in the old testament, others are just looking at the physical. King David has a special position because he was a man after GOD'S own heart.
Numbers 16:40 (Amplified Bible)
To be a memorial [a warning forever] to the Israelites, so that no outsider, that is, no one not of the descendants of Aaron, should come near to offer incense before the Lord, lest he become as Korah and as his company, as the Lord said to Eleazar through Moses.
Numbers 18:7 (Amplified Bible)
Therefore you and your sons with you shall attend to your priesthood for everything of the altar [of burnt offering and the altar of incense] and [of the Holy of Holies] within the veil, and you shall serve. I give you your priesthood as a service of gift. And the stranger [anyone other than Moses or your sons, Aaron] who comes near shall be put to death.
1 Samuel 13:14 (Amplified Bible)
But now your kingdom shall not continue; the Lord has sought out [David] a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince and ruler over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.
Take note of GOD'S command and jurisdiction in the life of David, he was to be a prince (king) and ruler (priest) over GOD's people. No other king was made to be like this in the old testament.
Examples of kings in the bible who tried to function as priests but was punished:
1. King Saul - was full of fear and disobedience when he offered to the LORD GOD.
1 Samuel 13:9-14 (Amplified Bible)
So Saul said, Bring me the burnt offering and the peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering [which he was forbidden to do].
And just as he finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came! Saul went out to meet and greet him.
Samuel said, What have you done? Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattering from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines were assembled at Michmash,
I thought, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to the Lord. So I forced myself to offer a burnt offering.
And Samuel said to Saul, You have done foolishly! You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God which He commanded you; for the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever;
But now your kingdom shall not continue; the Lord has sought out [David] a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince and ruler over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.
1 Samuel 15:11 (Amplified Bible)
I regret making Saul king, for he has turned back from following Me and has not performed My commands. And Samuel was grieved and angry [with Saul], and he cried to the Lord all night.
1 Samuel 15:22 (Amplified Bible)
Samuel said, Has the Lord as great a delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
1 Samuel 15:28 (Amplified Bible)
And Samuel said to him, The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day and has given it to a neighbor of yours who is better than you.
Saul became disobedient and did not gave heed to GOD's command of just becoming king and letting the priest's duty be upon Samuel.
2. King Uzziah - instead of becoming humble, he became proud when he became strong.
2 Chronicles 26:16-21 (Amplified Bible)
But when [King Uzziah] was strong, he became proud to his destruction; and he trespassed against the Lord his God, for he went into the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense.
And Azariah the priest went in after him and with him eighty priests of the Lord, men of courage.
They opposed King Uzziah and said to him, It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the Lord, but for the priests, the sons of Aaron, who are set apart to burn incense. Withdraw from the sanctuary; you have trespassed, and that will not be to your credit and honor before the Lord God.
Then Uzziah was enraged, and he had a censer in his hand to burn incense. And while he was enraged with the priests, leprosy broke out on his forehead before the priests in the house of the Lord, beside the incense altar.
And as Azariah the chief priest and all the priests looked upon him, behold, he was leprous on his forehead! So they forced him out of there; and he also made haste to get out, because the Lord had smitten him.
And King Uzziah was a leper to the day of his death, and, being a leper, he dwelt in a separate house, for he was excluded from the Lord’s house. And Jotham his son took charge of the king’s household, ruling the people of the land.
Let's see the difference of King David among these two kings.
1. King David humiliated (humbled) himself in GOD'S sight.
2 Samuel 6:13-14 (Amplified Bible)
And when those who bore the ark of the Lord had gone six paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling.
And David danced before the Lord with all his might, clad in a linen ephod [a priest’s upper garment].
He disclosed his heart to Michal his wife that he did to himself to humiliate (humble) himself before GOD so that GOD will be raised up.
2 Samuel 6:21-22 (Amplified Bible)
David said to Michal, It was before the Lord, Who chose me above your father and all his house to appoint me as prince over Israel, the people of the Lord. Therefore will I make merry [in pure enjoyment] before the Lord.
I will be still more lightly esteemed than this, and will humble and lower myself in my own sight [and yours]. But by the maids you mentioned, I will be held in honor.
It was like I'm there on that event, and I got invited, and I can't point my finger to King David saying he is king, because King David will point his finger at GOD and said GOD IS KING! HALLELUJAH!!!
Luke 14:27 (Amplified Bible)
Whoever does not persevere and carry his own cross and come after (follow) Me cannot be My disciple.
We have a cross to carry, before the throne, comes the cross first, so we are being tried and tested here on earth as gold and silver for GOD'S heavenly purpose for us. CROSS BEFORE THE THRONE. I like the sound of it. While we endure the cross (suffering for CHRIST'S sake, denied of rights and priveleges that unbelievers enjoy), we are rest assured that after this, comes the THRONE.
1 Peter 1:7 (Amplified Bible)
So that [the genuineness] of your faith may be tested, [your faith] which is infinitely more precious than the perishable gold which is tested and purified by fire. [This proving of your faith is intended] to redound to [your] praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) is revealed.
Romans 8:18 (Amplified Bible)
[But what of that?] For I consider that the sufferings of this present time (this present life) are not worth being compared with the glory that is about to be revealed to us and in us and for us and conferred on us!
1 Peter 4:13 (Amplified Bible)
But insofar as you are sharing Christ’s sufferings, rejoice, so that when His glory [full of radiance and splendor] is revealed, you may also rejoice with triumph [exultantly].
but of course in the new testament a born again believer is both priest and king.
1 Peter 2:9 (Amplified Bible)
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a dedicated nation, [God’s] own purchased, special people, that you may set forth the wonderful deeds and display the virtues and perfections of Him Who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
but this is another story and an adventure in itself.
IX. CONCLUSION:
Praise, worship, glorify, adore, bless, honor, acknowledge and thank You very much LORD JESUS for You will return on this earth together with us to execute Your judgement upon all unbelievers.
