A Christian Nation
Psalm 33:12
Psalms 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.
Recently a national radio talk show host and a listener were talking about Christianity in America
As the conversation continued the host, an avowed agnostic said
Why do Christians think they had anything special to do with the founding of this country
Anybody who reads history books knows Christianity was no more involved in America’s founding than any other religion
Unfortunately and inaccurately that seems to be the prevalent thought of many Americans today
This is typical to what our country in some ways has come to
The truth doesn’t matter any more
But I like to say
The truth has no agenda
It is simply the truth
But the truth is we are a nation that has been shaped by the Judeo-Christian principles found throughout the Bible
We are a Biblical nation from our very roots
But are we a Christian nation?
If being a Christian nation means that everyone is a Christian, or acts like a Christian, or that all of our national decisions are based on Christian principles
Then no, we are not a Christian nation
But if it means that Christianity was the overwhelming majority of our Founding Fathers
And if its influence is undeniably seen in our nation’s Founding Documents
And that Christian ethics and moral codes were accepted as the rule for our social order
Then yes, we are a Christian nation
Certainly those throughout America’s history were not timid about this fact
So is God part of America’s heritage?\
There is much confusion over our nation’s heritage
There is much confusion over the beliefs of our founding fathers
Today it is popular for uniformed people to say that the founders were not Christians
One of the first acts of the United States Congress was to authorize the printing of 20,000 Bibles for the Indians
The men who founded our country clearly tied it to Christian principles
Syndicated columnist Don Feder stated
By today’s standards the founding fathers were the religious right
In 1779 after the First Amendment was written the Supreme Court stated the following
By our form the Christian religion is the established religion
And all sects and denominations of Christians are placed under the same equal footing
Tim Lehaye says that Christian consensus is easily verified by the fact that prior to 1789
(the year 11 of the 13 states ratified the Constitution)
Many of the states still had constitutional requirements that a man must be a Christian in order to hold public office
52 of the 55 Founding Fathers who worked on the Constitution were members of orthodox churches
The Legislature of New York declared in 1838
This is a Christian nation
99/100ths if not a larger proportion of our whole population believe in the general doctrines of the Christian religion
In a report delivers by the House and Senate judiciary committees on March 27, 1854
They said that if the founders would have known that there would be an attack against Christianity
They would have strangled the revolution in the cradle
Wonder what they would think today?
Even the Supreme Court in 1892 declared in the court’s opinion the United States was a Christian nation
We could do this all night
This information is not fiction
It is all facts of history
Anyone can research
But we are living in a time of confusion and misinformation
We as a nation are confused about where God belongs
As time goes by, we are pushing God further and further out of society
What did our Founding Fathers fight and die for?
What did they lay their lives on the line for?
Benjamin Franklin stated
Gentlemen, we must all hang together, or surely we will all hang separately
They were risking their lives for what they believed in
Did they do this so that one day women could have the choice to dispose of the inconvenience of a mass of tissue
AKA murder the innocent baby within her body
Jesus said “Let the children come unto me”
Did our founding fathers fight for the rights of perverts committing an abomination
Literally could be translated as something disgusting
Did they fight for the education of our children in humanistic beliefs?
Did they fight for more government control
To take away our ability to express our Christian beliefs in the public arena?
Did they fight so that Muslims and Atheists could have more rights than Christians?
That is what our children are being taught in the schools
Where as our education system gone?
Prior to the Civil War 90% of all of America’s College Presidents were preachers of the Gospel
Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown, Dartmouth, William and Mary and Columbia were founded by Christian preachers
And church affiliations with the expressed intent to educate youth for Christ
John Harvard, a pastor in Charlestown, Massachusetts
The man whom Harvard University was named
Stated that the purpose of the University was
That every student be plainly instructed and earnestly pressed to consider well the main ends of his life and studies
To know God and Jesus Christ which is eternal life
And therefore to lay Christ in the bottom as the foundation of all knowledge and learning
And see that the Lord only giveth wisdom
To let everyone seriously set himself by prayer in secret to seek Christ Jesus as Lord and Master
Even Harvard’s original seal which can be seen on campus today states these words
Truth for Christ and the Church
Columbia University wrote that it was founded for
The chief things that are aimed in this college are to teach and gauge the children to know God and Jesus Christ and to love and serve Him
America’s first schoolbook was the “New England Primer”
It has the Lord’s Prayer on its cover
It taught the alphabet by using Biblical teachings
A. In Adam’s fall we sinned all
B. It’s Heaven to find, the Bible’s mind
C. Christ crucified for sinners died
So where has our education system gone?
I heard a story a while back about a school out in California
That was doing a brick sale fund raiser
Buy a brick to be placed in a sidewalk
They had raised like $45,000
Two ladies had purchased bricks, their own money
And placed scriptures on their bricks
The school told them they couldn’t place scripture bricks in the sidewalk
But these ladies persisted
Ready to take it to court
So the school relented
No, they didn’t let them place the bricks
Instead of fighting these crazy, lunatic, Bible thumping, racist, homophobic nut jobs (probably what they thought of them)
They cancelled the fundraiser
Returned the $45,000 and said no bricks
Now these women stood up for their beliefs for their rights as Christians
In a Christian nation
And did they win?
Not exactly
But they succeeded in exposing these people as fools
Giving up on a very profitable fundraiser for idiotic reasons
America of the present is a vacant shadow of America’s past
She is still the greatest nation on earth
There is much that is good about America
But where is America’s hope?
Good sense would tell us that if we were once a great nation
Then it would behoove us to return to that which made us great
But what are we to do?
Can we really make a difference
Indeed we can
We must pray
We must work within the process
We must participate
We must persevere
Where is America’s hope? Right here
The church is America’s hope
We must be involved
We must get involved
LISTEN - LEARN-FOLLOW what is going on in our world
PRAY PRAY PRAY
Pray for our country
Pray for our leaders
Pray for our elections
Call your congressmen
Stand up for what is right
Make a vocal stand against evil
Where does God fit into America?
The Founding Fathers who gave us this great nation made it clear
God, Jesus Christ belongs front and center in our society
Don’t be fooled by the so-called enlightened people
The founders knew that when you take God out of something
That something will fail
As Christians educated yourself and let people know about our Godly heritage
Christians should be the ones who are carrying the truth
Lets work to get America back on track
We must be willing to take a stand
To stand in the gap
Brian Williams, a talk show host on American Family Radio closes his show every day with this statement
Bow low before God, stand tall before man
And remember we are fighting a winnable war
2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
Psalms 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!
Blessed is the nation
Our founding fathers were willing to fight and die for this country
What are we willing to do?
If my people
Who is God’s people?
It is us
God is talking to us in this verse
He is talking to Christians
And specifically to His church
And God is giving us four conditions here in this verse
Conditions for forgiveness
1. Humble yourself by admitting your sins
This nation has sinned
We have fallen so far away from what this great nation was founded on
And who is at fault?
The liberals?
The socialists?
The left wing nut jobs?
The feminists?
The homosexual agenda?
The atheists?
If my people, who all called by my name
We have to humble ourselves and admit our sins
Second we must pray to God asking for this forgiveness
Earnestly pray
Pray not only for ourselves
But for our country
For our leaders
For the decisions they must make
Pray specifically by name for our congressmen for the state of Arkansas
And pray that God gives us the strength and courage to stand up for what is right
Stand up for the truth
Not just for what is politically correct
God’s people, Christians, must pray
Third we have to seek His face
Seek Him continually
Have a true longing for God
Do we have a longing for God today
Do we really want what He wants for our lives and our families and our country
Or do we want what WE want
Are we being selfish in our own desires
Are we so busy worrying about what we have on our schedules
We have school starting soon
There is soccer
And fall baseball
Football season is about to start
Its less then 40 days until Razorback football kicks off again
Is this new coach going to do well?
None of that matters
Are we seeking God continually
Longing for what God wants in our lives
And finally we need to turn from our sinful behavior
It says turn from our wicked ways
That word good have been translated evil
EVIL - or wretchedness
Those words sound so much more sinister than just the word sin
We have to turn from those things
Turn from our indifference
Turn from our tolerance for sin
Turn from our pet sins we are holding on to
True repentance is more than talk
It is changed behavior
Whether we sin individually
As a group
Or as a nation
Following these steps will lead to forgiveness
God will answer our earnest prayers
And what does He say the result will be?
I will hear from heaven and will forgive
And heal their land
Our land needs healing
The sun has not set on this nation yet
I believe we can still turn it around
But it is going to be our responsibility
I heard a story this week about Benjamin Franklin
During a meeting of the Continental Congress he sat and noticed the chair George Washington was sitting in
We noticed above Washington’s head on the back of the chair was a radiant sun
And Franklin had the debate in his head wondering
Is that a setting sun or a rising sun
And he determined it was a rising sun
The sun was not setting on this newly founded nation
Born out of adversity and war
That was a rising sun
We must decide today are we facing a rising sun or a setting sun
I believe we can bask in the warmth of a rising sun again
Don’t give us on this nation yet
God’s people must stand up
We must wake up
Wake up to what we face tomorrow
Wake up to what is truly going on in our nation’s capitol
Wake up to what they are trying to do to our history
Wake up to what they are trying to do to our Constitution
Wake up to what they are trying to do to our youth
And wake up and realize it is us that can make a difference
If my people who are called by my name
Are you willing to stand for Him?
