Summary: This is a verse by verse look at chapter 5 of the Book of Revelation.

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ – Chapter 5

We have looked at:

I. Things Which Thou Hast Seen – Rev 1

II. Things Which Are – The Church Age – Rev 2-3

III. Things Which Are To Come – Rev 4-22

Last lesson we looked at:

A. The Throne Of God – Rev 4

Here we found ourselves in the throne-room of God. In chapter five we are still there but our

attention now turns to:

B. The Seven Seals Book – Rev 5

Rev 5:1 (NASB) “I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a book written inside and on the back, sealed up with seven seals.”

Many translations say “scroll” instead of book. I think this is the proper idea. If we say book we have our modern idea of what a book looks like with its many pages and cover. But a scroll would be more of the accurate concept. It is a document that would be opened by unrolling it. Along the way it would have seven seals. We will not get to the opening of the first six seals until chapter six and then the seventh seal will be opened in chapter eight.

Notice that the scroll is written on both sides.

1. I saw – v. 1

(a) A Book

(1) In the right hand of Him who sat upon the throne

(2) Written inside and on the back

(3) Sealed with seven seals

Rev 5:2-3 (NASB) “And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, "Who is worthy to open the book and to break its seals?" And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the book or to look into it.

2. I saw – v. 2-3

(a) A strong angel

(1) Shouting

-a “Who is worthy?”

This is the main question of this chapter. Is there anyone who is worth to open the scroll and break the seals? At this point no-one is found to be worthy. Not in Heaven – not on the earth – not under the earth – in other words – nowhere.

-1 To open the book

-2 To break the seals

No one is found worthy – 3

In Heaven

On Earth

Under the Earth

*To open the book

*To look in the book

Rev 5:4 (NASB) “Then I began to weep greatly because no one was found worthy to open the book or to look into it;”

3. I wept – v. 4

(a) Because

(1) No one is worthy

-a To open the book

-b To look in the book

Rev 5:5 (NASB) “and one of the elders *said to me, "Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals."

4. I was spoken to – v. 5

(a) One Elder said

(1) “Stop Weeping”

(2) “Behold”

-a The Lion of Judah – (Gen. 49:8-10)

Gen 49:8-10 (NASB) "Judah, your brothers shall praise you; Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; Your father's sons shall bow down to you. Judah is a lion's whelp; From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He couches, he lies down as a lion, And as a lion, who dares rouse him up? The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes, And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.

-b The Root of David – (2 Samuel 7:12-16)

2 Sa 7:12-16 (NASB) "When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men, but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever."'"

-1 He has overcome

Remember that each of the churches were urged to overcome. But Jesus has already overcome four things: (1) Sin (2) Death (3) The world (4) Principalities and powers – Because of that:

-2 He is able to open the book

Rev 5:6-10 (NASB) “And I saw between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth. And He came and took the book out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. When He had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they *sang a new song, saying, "Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. "You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth."

[3] On the Day of Atonement 1 animal was sacrificed per Nation!

[4] In the New Testament John the Baptist announced 1 Lamb that would take sins away from the Whole world! John the Baptist said, “Behold the Lamb of God!” The Choirs in Heaven will sing, “Worthy is the Lamb!”

They will reign
