1. Superman -- Fact or Fiction?
George Reeves (TV's Superman in the 1950's) was popular for guest appearances, but his fame included risks. Kids might kick him in the shins or throw rocks to find out if he was the "real" Superman or a "pretend" Superman, the same way kids pull on Santa beards to find out if they are real. It seemed like every time he appeared in public as Superman, someone wanted to put him to the test.
In 1953, he may have faced real-life danger appearing at a department store opening wearing his Superman costume. A young fan, who wanted to see bullets bounce off Superman's chest, brought his dad's Army Colt, his dad's loaded... .45 caliber... Army Colt. Reeves talked him into putting it down. He told the boy that Superman could survive the shot without being hurt, but "when bullets bounce off my chest, they might hurt you and others around here." He continued to make public appearances, but never again in the Superman costume.
Some believe Reeves made up the story so he would not have to wear the costume when he appeared in public. It's understandable. I would not want kids kicking me in the shins or throwing rocks every time I showed up. That story was the only way he could stop the agents and producers from scheduling Superman appearances. When he appeared in public, children wanted to know. "Is he real or is he pretend?"
When God sent Samuel to anoint the next king, he was impressed with some of Jesse's sons, but God said, "Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart." He still does. God knows what is real and what isn't.

II. Bethlehem is a Place of Curiosity
People are often guided by expectations. Our bosses have expectations, teachers have expectations. We have expectations for our spouses, our children; sometimes our expectations may actually match theirs. The key to expectations is what we base them on; what is the foundation for our expectations? Are we basing our expectations on reality or something else, like our own wants and desires?
A. God Operates with the Principle of the Unexpected

Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46 who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.
Treasure, Unexpected
Alan Calhoun, Bristol, Connecticut told of a garage sale he and wife had. They had decided to put out a mirror they'd received as a wedding gift. The reason they were selling it was that it had a gaudy aqua-colored metal frame and they just couldn't find a room in their house where it looked good.
Shortly after the tag sale began, a man (who was looking to decorate his apartment) bought the mirror for one dollar. He was all excited, and he said as he bought it: "This is a great deal - it still has the plastic on it." Then he peeled off the aqua-colored protective covering... to reveal a beautiful gold finished frame underneath.
Lots of people go to garage sales looking for bargains just like that. Some people have a saying about garage sales: "One man's trash is another man's treasure," but once in a while, someone stumbles upon a treasure that the owner doesn't know the value of.

What then will we have?" 28 Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.
C. Jesus is the Unexpected Messiah

1. Our Own Expectations and Assumptions
Norm Evans was an all-pro lineman for the Miami Dolphins. Several years ago he wrote a book entitled, On God's Squad, in which he discusses his faith, his conversion and his view of football. When it came to his perspective of Jesus, he wrote, "I guarantee you; Christ would be the toughest guy who ever played this game. If he were alive today I would picture a six-foot-six 260-pound defensive tackle that would always make the big plays."
Fritz Peterson, who at one time played professional baseball for the New York Yankees, gave his take on Jesus. He said, "I firmly believe if Jesus Christ were sliding into second base, he would knock the second baseman into left-field to break up the double play. Christ might not throw a spitball, but He would play hard with the rules."
Not conventional views of Jesus are they. These two men brought their own experiences and passions to bear upon Jesus. The things they loved, the things that were influential in their lives became the framework for their perspective of the Savior, and they shaped their expectations of the Him by their own lives. At times don't we do the very same thing?
