Psalm 27:1-6 God's House
4 One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple
Psalm 27:4 is not about heaven later; its about life here and now.
“That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.”
1. The Priority of God's House --- “One thing have I desired of the Lord…”
A graphic artist was hired to create a logo for a company.
After several weeks of waiting a very simple logo was present with a bill of $5,000.
The artist said, “The price is for knowing what to leave out!”
Jesus said to the rich young ruler, “One thing thou lackest,’ Mark 10:21.
To a frustrated Martha Jesus said, “One thing is needful,” Luke 10:42.
The blind man who had been healed said, “One thing I know,” John 9:25.
Paul said, “This one thing I do,” Philippians 3:13.
2. The Passion for God's House --- ”That will I seek after…”
Its all about the heart. “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also,” Mat 6:21. The reason the house of the Lord is no longer our priority and passion is because the Lord of the house is no longer our priority and passion.
Like those of the church at Ephesus, many have “left their first love,” Revelation 2:4.
The Bible says, “Draw nigh to God and He will draw nigh to thee…” James 4:8.
3. The Pattern for God's House ---
“that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life"
To “dwell” in the house of the Lord all the days of his life, not just on the Sabbath.
He wanted to be in the house of the Lord because his heart was there.
“Dwell” is like the word “live.” Its like asking, “Where do you live?
Many become occasional spectators, but not faithful participators.
4. The Purpose for God's House ---
“To behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple…”
The house of the Lord is all about the Lord of the house.
Jesus promised, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them,” Matthew 18:20.
On the Day of Pentecost God filled His house with the presence of the Holy Spirit.
When John saw the Revelation of Jesus Christ He was “in the midst of the seven candlesticks,” the seven churches, Revelation 1:13.
Ephesians 2:22 says the church is “a habitation of God through the Spirit.”
i Its not about a Place. The Tabernacle and the Temple were beautiful places.
ii Its not about the People. If you fix your eyes on people you will be disappointed.
iii Its about a Person. Set your vision on the Lord and you will always be delighted!
(a) Glory - To behold the beauty of the Lord - His beauty is ageless and eternal.
Going to church and sitting in a building cannot change us. But going to church can draw us closer to the One who can change us!
Moses prayed, “And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us...” Psalm 90:17a.
(b) Guidance - “To enquire in his temple.”
“enquire” comes from a root word that means “to plow, to break forth.”
The idea is that open our lives to the inspection of God.
Church is about ...worshiping the Lord, witnessing about the Lord, working for the Lord.
Hag 1:7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways. 8 Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD
