Psalm 20 The Fight of Faith 1. The Intercession of Faith - 20:1-4
(a) God Will Shield You in the Battle 1 The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee;
(b) God Will Strengthen You in the Battle - 20:2 Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion;
(c) God Will Support You in the Battle - 20:3 Remember all thy offerings, and accept thy burnt sacrifice; Selah.
(d) God Will Save You in the Battle - 20:4 Grant thee according to thine own heart, and fulfil all thy counsel.
2. The Expectation of Faith - 20:5 We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners: the LORD fulfil all thy petitions. (a) To Rejoice In God's Salvation - 20:5 We will rejoice in thy salvation “Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord” (Exod. 14:13).
(b) To Rally Around God's Standard - Psalm 20:5 and in the name of our God we will set up our banners (c) To Rest On God's Sufficiency - Psalm 20:5 the LORD fulfil all thy petitions.
3. The Realization of Faith - 20:6 Now know I that the LORD saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand. (a) God’s Mastery Is An Accomplished Fact - 20:6 This is better rendered, “Now know I that Jehovah has saved His anointed” David sees his triumph over the enemy as already achieved. The Christian warrior is not to fight for victory, but rather to fight from victory.‘Wellington defeated - Napoleon.’ (b) God’s Ministry Is An Answered Fact - 20:6 he will hear him from his holy heaven
(c) God’s Might Is An Awesome Fact - 20:6 with the saving strength of his right hand. Psalms 17:7 Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them. Psalms 89:13 Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand. Psalms 98:1 O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.
4. The Affirmation of Faith - 20:7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. (a) The Liability Of Fleshly Confidence - 20:7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: Syrians (2 Sam. 10:18). And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.
(b) The Loyalty Of Full Confidence In The Lord - 20:7 but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. (Deut. 17:16). But he (King) shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses: forasmuch as the LORD hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way. (Phil. 3:3). For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
5. The Jubilation of Faith - 20:8,9 They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright. 9 Save, LORD: let the king hear us when we call. (a) The Sign of a Defeated Foe - 20:8 They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright.
(b) The Song of a Triumphant King - 20:9 Save, LORD: let the king hear us when we call.
Hezekiah knew something about this affirmation of faith when Sennacherib invaded Judah ( 2 Chron. 32:7–8). Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him:
8 With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
