Praise, worship and thank You very much LORD JESUS for You raised us up together with the Seed, the LORD JESUS, and ALL Your promises and Abrahamic Covenant is at work and actively running and working in our raised lives today and in the ages to come.

Deuteronomy 25:5-6 (Amplified Bible)
If brothers live together and one of them dies and has no son, his wife shall not be married outside the family to a stranger [an excluded man]. Her husband’s brother shall go in to her and take her as his wife and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her.
And the firstborn son shall succeed to the name of the dead brother, that his name may not be blotted out of Israel.
Onan has been commanded by his father Judah to perform the Mosaic code called Lex Leviratus as a recognized custom during those days. The existence of the practice has been traced in different frames among Indians, Persians, and other nations of Asia and Africa—and raise up seed to thy brother. According to Jamieson, Fausset & Brown Commentary, Lex Leviratus is "the first instance of a custom, which was afterwards incorporated among the laws of Moses, that when a husband died leaving a widow, his brother next of age was to marry her, and the issue, if any, was to be served heir to the deceased."
Onan was very conscious of his personality and personal dignity rather than conscious of GOD's Grace and Protection upon his life, disobeyed his father, Judah.

Light is sown for the [uncompromisingly] righteous and strewn along their pathway, and joy for the upright in heart [the irrepressible joy which comes from consciousness of His favor and protection].
Leviticus 18:16 (Amplified Bible)
You shall not have intercourse with your brother’s wife; she belongs to your brother.
Yes, this is different from incense, where it's forbidden for another brother to have his brother's wife. The first brother or either brother must be dead first as this breaks the rule of marriage upon their life.

In the family of Naomi, this custom is still observed, hence it gave opportunity for Ruth, a Moabite woman to be part of Israel.

But Naomi said, Turn back, my daughters, why will you go with me? Have I yet sons in my womb that may become your husbands?
You see GOD over rules even traditions of men while self-righteous people misinterpret it as a way of evading the WORDS of GOD and makes traditions and customs as a way of cover up or alibi of not doing the WORDS of GOD instead. Traditions and customs must intensify love, obedience and faithfulness on GOD's WORDS.
Matthew 15:6 (Amplified Bible)
So for the sake of your tradition (the rules handed down by your forefathers), you have set aside the Word of God [depriving it of force and authority and making it of no effect].
Mark 7:3 (Amplified Bible)
For the Pharisees and all of the Jews do not eat unless [merely for ceremonial reasons] they wash their hands [diligently up to the elbow] with clenched fist, adhering [carefully and faithfully] to the tradition of [practices and customs handed down to them by] their forefathers [to be observed].

And He said to them, You have a fine way of rejecting [thus thwarting and nullifying and doing away with] the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition (your own human regulations)!
But if your so-called tradition and custom will not glorify GOD and HIS WORDS then better give it all up so that you will not be carried off as spoil or captives to so-called philosophy, intellectualism and vain deceit.
Colossians 2:8 (Amplified Bible)
See to it that no one carries you off as spoil or makes you yourselves captive by his so-called philosophy and intellectualism and vain deceit (idle fancies and plain nonsense), following human tradition (men’s ideas of the material rather than the spiritual world), just crude notions following the rudimentary and elemental teachings of the universe and disregarding [the teachings of] Christ (the Messiah).
Onan or "onan" in Hebrew meaning: strong. His purpose and design was to preserve the whole inheritance for his own house.

1. Low selfish motive - he is more conscios of his own personal dignity rather than to preserve the whole inheritance for his own family.
2. Wilful disobedience to GOD's ordinance - it was already written in the Mosaic code as a Law for the Jews.

3. Dishonor done to his own body - it's a homicidal waste of the generative powers, a demoniac bestiality, an outrage to ancestors, to posterity, and to one's own life. His purpose is to raise up seed for his brother, Er, not to do family planning. It is described as unnatural wickedness, a grievous wrong, and a desecration of the body as the temple of GOD.
4. Aggravated by his position in the covenant family. Remember Judah, his father is one of the 12 patriarchs and is the foundation, role model of his posterity and clan as family of GOD, but in spite of the command of his father to preserve, he did it the other way. What's more, is the command is a futuristic command because JESUS, the Messiah, will come or descend from the stock of Judah. JSUS as our Big Brother, is the Seed Himself that must be raised up, but Onan, disallowed it, that's why he died like Er.
B. To live with her and raise offspring for your brother

Saying, Teacher, Moses said, If a man dies, leaving no children, his brother shall marry the widow and raise up a family for his brother.
Now there were seven brothers among us; the first married and died, and, having no children, left his wife to his brother.
The second also died childless, and the third, down to the seventh.
Last of all, the woman died also.
Here we go again these Sadduccess because they don't want to believe in JESUS's doctrine of resurrection that JESUS is the Resurrection and the Life, they have used and abused tradition and custom as way or alibi to not believe in JESUS's WORDS which is totally wrong and will ruin the purpose of tradition, culture and customs that is supposed to promote GOD and HIS WORDS.
Mark 12:19-23 (Amplified Bible)
Teacher, Moses gave us [a law] that if a man’s brother died, leaving a wife but no child, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.
Now there were seven brothers; the first one took a wife and died, leaving no children.
And the second [brother] married her, and died, leaving no children; and the third did the same;
And all seven, leaving no children. Last of all, the woman died also.
Now in the resurrection, whose wife will she be? For the seven were married to her.
Luke 20:29-33 (Amplified Bible)

Obedience to GOD and his WORDS must have brought fame, riches, long life and honor to Onan, but in the reverse, he died early for lack of wisdom.

For physical training is of some value (useful for a little), but godliness (spiritual training) is useful and of value in everything and in every way, for it holds promise for the present life and also for the life which is to come.
Onan never lived in godliness and spiritual training brought about by his father, Judah for him.
